The exposition moves systematically from the basic to more sophisticated concepts with recent developments and several open problems.  With challenging exercises, examples, and illustrations to help explain the rigorous analytic basis for the Navier–-Stokes equations, mean curvature flow equations, and other important equations describing real phenomena, this book is written for graduate students and researchers, not only in mathematics but also in other disciplines.

This is a model for all protocol lab manuals. It is clear, precise, and well done. Incorporates the experiences of the authors, which are used to perfect the assays and protocols and minimize insufficient results and data. Troubleshooting tips are useful and original. Truly a necessary benchtop reference for the serious researcher.

Very useful reference

Very useful reference for any biochemistry lab. Less bulkier than cold spring harbor manuals and certainly packed with a lot of useful information. This book would be useful for the professional as well as the novice. Detailed protocols included and updated from the previous edition. The section of post translational modifications was the most useful for my purposes. This book can take you from cells to purified protein under most circumstances with the minimum of repetition. I recommend this book particularly for graduate students in biochemistry who deal with protein purification as well as technicians.

It also betrays a conception of religion that is more contemporary than that of the period in which he lived.

Harold K. Bush Jr. highlights Twain’s attractions to and engagements with the wide variety of religious phenomena of America in his lifetime, and how these matters affected his writings. Though Twain lived in an era of tremendous religious vigor, it was also a time of spiritual upheaval and crisis. The rise of biological and psychological sciences, the criticism of biblical texts as literary documents, the influx of world religions and immigrant communities, and the trauma of the Civil War all had dramatic effects on America’s religious life. At the same time mass urban revivalism, the ecumenical movement, Social Christianity, and occultic phenomena, like spiritualism and mind sciences, all rushed in to fill the voids. The rapid growth of agnosticism in the 1870s and 1880s is also clearly reflected in Twain’s life and writings. Thus Twain’s career reflects in an unusually resonant way the vast changes in American belief during his lifetime.

Bush’s study offers both a new and more complicated understanding of Twain and his literary output and serves as the cultural biography of an era.

As a consequence, many researchers have begun to re-examine various branches of classical mathematics from the complexity point of view. For a given nonconstructive existence theorem in classical mathematics, one would like to find a construc­ tive proof which admits a polynomial-time algorithm for the solution. One of the examples is the recent work on algorithmic theory of per­ mutation groups. In the area of numerical computation, there are also two tradi­ tionally independent approaches: recursive analysis and numerical analysis.

This is an important book in complexity theory.

This is an important book in complexity theory. It ties the discrete complexity theory of NP-completeness with numerical computation of continuous functions. Traditionally, numerical computation uses floating-point machines as the computational model and the theory is very messy. More recently, there are several approaches trying to create a more coherent theory with discrete complexity theory. This theory using Turing machines as a model is one of them. The advantage of this approach is that it makes a direct connection with the NP-completeness theory. The book is well-written and includes a brief review of discrete complexity theory.

Facts, Figures and Theories of Tibes

Tibes is one of Puerto Rico's most famous sites for ceremonial ballcourts and plazas, its first structures and clearings dating back to the pre-Taino period.This volume is hard archaeology and might seem dry reading for some in the humanities. But in such a case the Conclusions of each chapter give clear synopses and possible interpretations of the current research. The maps and many of the charts also make good quick reference when comparing Tibes to other ceremonial centers such as the celebrated Caguana, and the more newly uncovered Jacana.

Very great, could have been better

This is a great book to get you motivated to take more interesting landscapes/nature photos. It's strong on composition ideas, and organized very nicely. It's not at all heavy on the technical aspects, and it specifically is not meant to be (go to your local library and you can find dozens of books on the technical aspects of photography).

There were a few things that bugged me along the way. First of all, this new edition is 100% digital, whereas the first version was 100% film. This doesn't change that much in regards to photo creativity or composition, but the first version had helpful sections about how to compensate for certain lighting conditions depending on what kind of film you were using. Plus that means 100% of the photos in the first book were film, 100% digital in the second book, and no two are the same. I think it would be worth it to read both and compare photos from both. She constantly mentions in the second edition how easy digital manipulation is, so I'll bet that changed her approach when she was actually in the field.

For all of her example photos, she lists the size of her lens, the focal length at which she used it, shutter speed, and aperture. No ISO. Again, this is not meant to be a technical book, but I could see a newbie trying to match her settings to the best of their knowledge, getting bad results, and becoming discouraged. I also mention this because she wrote down her film speed for every shot in the first edition. And I hate to say it, but she claims to use a six thousand dollar Canon DSLR throughout this book, and there's a very real advantage as far as way higher, way cleaner ISOs being at your disposal when you're in the field shooting at very small apertures.

Sometimes she'll tell a really great, detailed story about how she figured out something in the field or how something fell into place for a truly memorable photo, and the photos on that page are of completely unrelated situations, so you can't see what she's even talking about. Though most of the time, she does include quality photographs related to the subject about which she's writing.

The last thing that bothered me was the typos. I can't say there's a lot of them but there's a half dozen very obvious ones that take away from the book. The "wondeorful" plug-ins she uses in Photoshop (pg. 127) and getting feedback "fr/om" your viewer (pg. 19) distract from the purty, purty picture on the opposite page. But that's just me.

Overall this is a very great book, full of very great photos. This is THE book to get once you've read up on shutter speed, aperture, and all the other boring technical bits. I've never read something about depth of field in a technical book and wanted to go out shooting, but I'll read one page in this book about diagonal lines, complementary colors, or the different qualities of light and I'll instantly be tempted to grab my camera and go out shooting.

Wisdom for photographers of Any skill level

A Buddhist proverb says, "when the student is ready, a teacher will appear." Brenda Tharp may be that teacher for this mediocre photography student. I've had her book for a while, and I find myself returning to it again and again, often with an "OH! That's what she Meant." This is not a "how to" book, it's far more useful than that. Rather, this slim volume challenges you think about using photography to express ideas, vision, interests beyond pretty pictures that simply record a place or time. Tharp provides the minimum technical details along with her photographs, but the emphasis is on creating images that convey to the viewer what the shooter intended---and, for the shooter to think about what they are trying to say. The book is a treasure for photographers of Any skill level but is aimed at those with dSLRs. Whether youre moving up from point `n shoots or have a large collection of lenses and bodies, much wisdom can be found here---if you're willing to do the necessary work.

a lot of "what" but little "how"

I read this book following Ken Rockwell's recommendation on his website. He writes that Brenda Tharpe's book "cover[s] everything you need to know, like seeing light, shadow, balance, composition, color, interpretation, texture, and everything that matters". Yes, the importance of these variables are mentioned. What is lacking in Tharpe's explanations is how to conceptualize and realize your objective. She states several times the need to experiment, practice, and become accustomed to using your equipment. Omitting the process from visual concept to physical photograph is fine, I suppose, because many references dwell upon technical procedures. What Tharpe crucially lacks is how to crystallize one's creative ambitions into a compelling visual concept; that is, the step before taking the picture. This initial step is essential in a book with the word "creative" in its title.

The book reads like a one-person photo exhibit of rather eclectic subjects and techniques, where the photographer cheerfully comments on each picture. "I waited several hours for the orca to breach", "See how I captured the dominance of the Golden Gate bridge" ... Being an artisan does not necessarily make one a teacher.

Tharpe mentions "style" in her book, and an admonition she received many years ago that her work was merely postcard material devoid of her presence. I closed the book (it took only 3 hours to read) with a puzzling aftertaste: What _is_ Tharpe's style? If anything, her photos are nice postcards, calendars, tourism brochures, and stock photo material. Which are qualities I admire. Her technique and perseverance are present, but her character is not. Perhaps a self-critique of her own style and an introspective analysis of how she developed it might help readers transition from stirring emotions to visual concepts.

Good for the uninitiated

The simple truth is that there are many photographers out there with the capability to shoot RAW but are still shooting JPEG. It's mostly because of the fear that shooting in RAW format will increase their already hectic workflow. Then there's the photographers that just don't really get how much of a difference in flexibility and capability that shooting in RAW can have on the outcome of a digital photograph. If you fall into either of these camps then this book may be just the ticket you need to getting the most out of your images.

No, it's not for everyone. You're really not going to learn much if you already have a solid RAW work-flow, although there were a couple tricks and tips I did pick up that I either didn't know or had forgotten about.

This isn't about how experienced you are as a photographer either, it's about how knowledgeable you are about your work-flow. That's what's important. The better and faster you are at getting your images from your camera to final output the more time you'll spend behind the lens instead of in front of a computer monitor.

While you can get much of this information around the Internet I've always found it much handier to have a book that will take you step by step and to have access to as a reference when it comes to software.

I think our author does a fine job of explaining and showing the capabilities found in Adobe Elements, Photoshop, and Lightroom as RAW work-flow software programs. A pretty good book to get if you aren't already shooting in RAW.

A deeply flawed book

What this book attempts is admirable -- to introduce digital photographers to the process of using Photoshop to convert RAW images to fully usable formats. But it aims at a broad audience audience of users of so many programs -- Photoshop, Elements, and Lightroom, in all their various versions -- and this is its fatal flaw. For there are differences among these various programs and the many versions thereof, some minor but some very significant, and the book's efforts to distinguish among them are desultory and inadequate.

The book is also extremely incomplete, sloppily put together, and carelessly edited -- like a cookbook whose recipes were never field-tested before being published. Here are just a few examples. The many excellent illustrations showing screen shots of Adobe Camera Raw in action switch from one version of Camera Raw to another, without comment. Up until p. 58 we see one version of Camera Raw, but suddenly on p. 59 there is a shift to a different version -- one that has different control sliders. But there is no comment about this in the text. How is the reader to make sense of this? Which sliders from the first version correspond to which from the second? The author never even discusses the differences between versions. There is only a vague reference to "all versions of Camera Raw" on p. 59 to even hint to the reader that there are many versions of the camera raw plug-in, and that the one the reader is using may not match the illustrations and descriptions in the text. It is left to the reader to make guesses. I suppose that what is called the "Shadows" slider in one version is called the "Blacks" slider in the other, but who knows? And what about the important "Recovery" slider? There doesn't seem to be any corresponding slider in the other version. What is worse, the author doesn't even mention this slider, either in the text or the index. I had to go to my trusty "Photoshop Elements 7: The Missing Manual" to discover that this important control allows you to bring back detail in overexposed highlights without overexposing the rest of the image. How could a careful and responsible author fail to even mention this feature? It boggles the mind.

Pages 156-161 put forward a fascinating procedure for increasing dynamic range, allowing you to salvage a photograph with a compressed dynamic range by in effect combining two images -- one adjusted for shadow detail and the other for highlights. Unfortunately, the procedure does not work. Where it breaks down is on p. 158 where the author tells us to "open the same image [a second time] in Camera Raw" without bothering to mention that after the image was manipulated the first time in Camera Raw, an .xmp file was created recording the raw conversion data for the image. Once that file is created, opening the image in Elements bypasses the Raw Conversion software altogether. I'm sure there's a way around this, but the author never gives us a clue that problem even exists.

Finally, there is almost no discussion of the crucial issue of file formats, which ones to use and when to use them. At various points in the conversion process, one is faced with the question of whether to save one's work as a .jpg, or a .dng, or a .psd (among others). How is the beginning user of raw conversion software supposed to decide this when the issue is not even broached in the text?

So my advice is not to waste your money on this book. For just a few more dollars, you can get Ben Long's excellent "Getting Started with Camera Raw," which is not plagued with the problems that bedevil Canfield's deeply flawed manual.

Jon Canfield's CAMERA RAW 101: BETTER PHOTOS WITH PHOTOSHOP, ELEMENTS, AND LIGHTROOM comes from a digital photographer and software expert who explains how to take advantage of the latest versions of Photoshop, Elements and Lightroom to get fine results. Adobe Camera Raw has grown and changed from its original Photoshop CS2 version: this provides a survey of how RAW files are superior, and the techniques involved in organizing and developing RAW images in both ACR and Lightroom.
