Since the first edition of this book was published in 2001, Maple™ has evolved from Maple V into Maple 13. Accordingly, this new edition has been thoroughly updated and expanded to include more applications, examples, and exercises, all with solutions; two new chapters on neural networks and simulation have also been added. There are also new sections on perturbation methods, normal forms, Gröbner bases, and chaos synchronization.

The work provides an introduction to the theory of dynamical systems with the aid of Maple. The author has emphasized breadth of coverage rather than fine detail, and theorems with proof are kept to a minimum. Some of the topics treated are scarcely covered elsewhere. Common themes such as bifurcation, bistability, chaos, instability, multistability, and periodicity run through several chapters.

The book has a hands-on approach, using Maple as a pedagogical tool throughout. Maple worksheet files are listed at the end of each chapter, and along with commands, programs, and output may be viewed in color at the author’s website. Thought I'd give a more in depth review than the others here.
Most advanced math textbooks contain one or two chapters that turn me off. I must say that every chapter in this book had useful information or very good applications.
The opening chapter is a brief introduction to Maple V (some Maple 8 commands are posted on the books website). Note that Maple 9 is now out and no doubt Maple X will soon follow.
Chapters 1-7 cover planar systems in some detail, vectorfield in DEplot is a real winner here. Chapters 8 and 9 cover 3D and nonautonomous systems - the poincare command in Maple is a real time saver.
Chapters 10-12 cover a lot of research results on limit cycles - the most lucid I have seen in any textbook.
The remaining half of the book concentrates on both real and complex discrete systems. There are the usual cobweb diagrams, bifurcation diagrams and Mandelbrot set. Where this book comes into its own, however, is in Chapters 16-20.
Lasers and nonlinear optics are investigated using complex iterative maps. Fractals and even multifractals are discussed in some detail. The book ends with a chapter dedicated to chaos control.
Overall, the book is concise with pertinent examples and applications. It is not dogged down with math notation, theorems and proofs.
Strogatz, Perko and Allgood are good books to practice more Maple programing techniques.

One of the best!

Good points:
1. Solutions to ALL exercises - why don't all books do this - I hate answers to odd numbered exercises - aaaagh!
2. Maple programs can be viewed on the Web - they all work.
3. Covers some topics not in other books.
4. You don't need to be a math major to understand the book.
5. There are no bad points.
I would rate this book as highly as Steven Strogatz's "Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos" (now in paperback) and the book "Chaos - an Introduction to Dynamical Systems" by James Yorke et al.

First-rate!

I did my degree in Micro-Electronics and Computing but I've always been fascinated with chaos theory. This book is easy to read and you do not need to be a pure mathematician to understand the theory involved. I did most of the lower level mathematics in my degree course and it was nice to see it applied to real world problems.
The MAPLE code for many of the plots in the book is included at the end of chapters and there is an excellent web-site that allows you to view the figures in color. The MAPLE tutorials given at the beginning of the book should help new users.
The Aims and Objectives listed at the beginning of each chapter is a nice touch and there are many interesting exercises for the reader to get their teeth into.
Some of the chapters are at an advanced level but the results given there are easy to understand. It was also nice to have recently pubished research articles in the Bibliography.
I would highly recommend this book to anybody interested in chaos, fractals or nonlinear maths in general. I wish a topic like this could have been offered in my degree.

How to make mathematics look nice

I assume that you would not be looking at this book's entry in the catalogue if you did not know already that TeX is the best available tool for typesetting manuscripts involving a lot of mathematical formulae. This book presents LaTeX2e, the current "industry standard", which combines LaTeX with AMS-TeX.
The first objective of the book is to get a complete novice started in the shortest amount of time. This is done in Part 1, which contains all one needs to typeset a simple mathematical text. Part 2 gives a very detailed description of typesetting text and mathematics, pointing out the differences between LaTeX-derived commands and AMS-TeX codes. This is done very carefully and clearly. The structure of all sections is basically the same: overview of the contents, definitions of the commands covered, their scope, examples, typical errors (together with error commands generated by LaTeX when something goes wrong), more advanced topics. This part covers pretty much any scenario you are likely to encounter typesetting a mathematical document.
Part 3 goes into details of LaTeX document structure, including a synopsis of various document classes and how best to use them. Part 4 explains how to customize LaTeX, Part 5 treats long documents and BiBTeX, the bibliographic database. Final part, Part 6, treats LaTeX and the Web, mainly by poiting out various Web sites that can help you if you are serious about posting your work on the Web.
The book is very good at what it sets out to explain. There are, however, certain topics the author decided to leave out. There is no description of the picture environment, which although not exactly user friedly, is useful from time to time. The slide environment for producing transparencies is not described either, and I think this could have been included without too much trouble. To me this is a slightly more serious drawback than the first omission.
I give the book five stars for the following reason. This is a book that teaches you how to produce beautiful scientific manuscripts rather than how to rewrite LaTeX. The book itself is a very nice looking document, and so serves as a very good example of what is possible to achieve with LaTeX, if you follow the author's advice.

A highly recommended tutorial and reference to LaTeX

To write a mathematics formula intensive article or thesis, one has two possibilities: either using a MS-Word-like software, or using LaTeX. There is no doubt: even if LaTeX made documents have a much more professional aspect, the use of this typesetting package is not so trivial! Hence, unlike traditional word processing software, a companion textbook is essential. Among the documentation available (for free) on the web, or other textbooks I went thru at the library, I found "Math into LaTeX" the most valuable introduction and reference book to LaTeX. I have to say that I bought it because once at the bookstore, among the books available on the shelf, it appears to me to be the one with the best price-quality ratio (it is extremely nicely crafted... and made with LaTeX). Once at home, the beginner I was finely understood the philosophy associated with this typesetting package, and at last, I was able to write the 3-page document I wanted. Now I consider I have become an *intermediate* user of LaTeX, and this book is still the one I put on the back burner; it realy constitute the concise and ergonomic reference I wanted. To conclude, perhaps the most valuable outcomes of this book are the rules and tips given all along the pages by Gratzer. If you follow them, I ensure you will proceed efficiently.

The book provides a short introduction to the overall use of LaTeX. This section is not the most exhaustive text on the topic, but provides all the fundamental information for a user start preparing a LaTeX document, assuming the user has LaTeX installed and has some basic knowledge of creating LaTeX documents.
The book's core provides numerous useful details and examples of how to typeset math, both simple and complex, using either LaTeX commands or AMS-LaTeX commands. This is the most important aspect of the book and is supported with many important examples using both LaTeX and AMS-LaTeX document classes with supporting example articles to be found in the appendix.
Valuable chapters include how to write books in LaTeX with details of how to handle large bibliographies and indices. Additionally, the complex issue of how to format math for web based publications is also presented in some detail.
Lastly, the structure of the book is very clear and formatted ideally, providing the reader with an excellent example of how to typeset and structure a book using LaTeX.

Emphasized throughout are numerous applications to biology, chemical kinetics, economics, electronics, epidemiology, nonlinear optics, mechanics, population dynamics, and neural networks.

Mathematica’s symbolic, numerical, and graphical capabilities make it ideal for the study of nonlinear dynamical systems. An introductory chapter provides complete tutorials on how to use Mathematica’s text-based input commands and palettes, enabling new users to become familiar with the program, while providing a good reference source for experts. Throughout the book, the author has focused on breadth of coverage rather than fine detail, with theorems and proofs being kept to a minimum. The code is available as a download from Wolfram!

Some of the programs are really well done. What
convinced me is the von Koch code worked in an experimental application I've been trying to do for several years.
As I have several IFS and L-system von Koch that I couldn't manage to get in a useable form,
that says something for the programming in the book.
The material in the book isn't really very new, but it works
in the current Mathematica version and with the download can be taught to students
with minimal trouble.

The protagonist is accompanied by a Watson-like admirer of comparable wooden-headedness, who admiringly keeps track of all this punctilio—and constantly just barely avoids offending his patron at every turn. The work ends with the provisions of the real “Code Duello,” which cede nothing to the fiction in sheer ridiculousness.

Since the first experimental achievement of Bose–Einstein condensates (BEC) in 1995 and the award of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2001, the properties of these gaseous quantum fluids have been the focus of international interest in physics. This monograph is dedicated to the mathematical modelling of some specific experiments which display vortices and to a rigorous analysis of features emerging experimentally.

In contrast to a classical fluid, a quantum fluid such as a Bose–Einstein condensate can rotate only through the nucleation of quantized vortices beyond some critical velocity. There are two interesting regimes: one close to the critical velocity, where there is only one vortex that has a very special shape; and another one at high rotation values, for which a dense lattice is observed.

One of the key features related to superfluidity is the existence of these vortices. We address this issue mathematically and derive information on their shape, number, and location. In the dilute limit of these experiments, the condensate is well described by a mean field theory and a macroscopic wave function solving the so-called Gross–Pitaevskii equation. The mathematical tools employed are energy estimates, Gamma convergence, and homogenization techniques. We prove existence of solutions that have properties consistent with the experimental observations. Open problems related to recent experiments are presented.

The work can serve as a reference for mathematical researchers and theoretical physicists interested in superfluidity and quantum fluids, and can also complement a graduate seminar in elliptic PDEs or modelling of physical experiments.

Propaganda history

This is on the whole a standard semi-historical text on non-Euclidan geometry. What sets this text apart from the others in this genre is Trudeau's candidness regarding conclusions and interpretation of this story. Trudeau's conclusions and interpretations are precisely those of the blue-eyed research mathematician of today, not realising that he is distorting history for the purpose of propaganda. His propaganda goal is simple: intuition is bad, formalism is good. The history of non-Euclidean geometry does not support this conclusion, so Trudeau has to fake it. He does this in the form of fictitious dialogues with a student, whose stupid "intuitions" are always set straight. For example, this alleged student has the alleged "intuition" that Playfair's axiom is necessarily true. His feeble struggle with Trudeau's iron intellect even needs to be condensed by this statement:

"Time goes by. More proofs are suggested. Trudeau, with obvious pleasure, demonstrates how each proposal turns on some assertion logically equivalent to Postulate 5. Finally the other lapses into exasperated silence." (p. 161).

The conclusion sanctioned by Trudeau is that intuition should be given up in favour of formalism. But this is complete bogus-history. The whole point of the debate concerning Postulate 5 was precisely that it was *not* intuitively obvious. Which is why Trudeau is reduced to fighting, "with obvious pleasure," a fictitious opponent. While the result was not intuitive, the nature of the formal system suggested that it could be proved. Thus *it was the formal system that fooled us,* not our intuitions about geometry. Therefore, if any lessons are to be learned from the history of non-Euclidean geometry it is the exact opposite of that sanctioned by Trudeau.

Among the many other things which Trudeau gets backwards because of his doctrinal blindness are the relation of logic to mathematics (p. 14) and why Kant was wrong (p. 250). But I do not have the patience to detail these things.

For the past 25 years the theory of pseudodifferential operators has played an important role in many exciting and deep investigations into linear PDE. Over the past decade, this tool has also begun to yield interesting results in nonlinear PDE. This book is devoted to a summary and reconsideration of some used of pseudodifferential operator techniques in nonlinear PDE.

One goal has been to build a bridge between two approaches which have been used in a number of papers written in the last decade, one being the theory of paradifferential operators, pioneered by Bony and Meyer, the other the study of pseudodifferential operators whose symbols have limited regularity. The latter approach is a natural successor to classical devices of deriving estimates for linear PDE whose coefficients have limited regularity in order to obtain results in nonlinear PDE.

After developing the requisite tools, we proceed to demonstrate their effectiveness on a range of basic topics in nonlinear PDE. For example, for hyperbolic systems, known sufficient conditions for persistence of solutions are both sharpened and extended in scope. In the treatment of parabolic equations and elliptic boundary problems, it is shown that the results obtained here interface particularly easily with the DeGiorgi-Nash-Moser theory, when that theory applies.

To make the work reasonable self-contained, there are appendices treating background topics in harmonic analysis and the DeGiorgi-Nash-Moser theory, as well as an introductory chapter on pseudodifferential operators as developed for linear PDE.

The book should be of interest to graduate students, instructors, and researchers interested in partial differential equations, nonlinear analysis in classical mathematical physics and differential geometry, and in harmonic analysis.

About the Author
Michael Taylor is a teacher at Michael Hall (Waldorf) School in the UK. He promotes traditional childhood games of movement and agility for the classroom, playground, and gym, and is often called the String Man. In addition to string figures, Michael collects and teaches clapping games, finger games, jump-rope activities, ball bouncing, and beanbag games. He always carries a string with him, and has been known to share string patterns with strangers on trains and airplanes. What these problems have in common is their formulation in terms of suitably posed initial and boundary value problems for nonlinear partial differential equations. Such problems arise, for example, in the mathematical treatment of the processes of heat conduction, filtration through porous media, flows of non-Newtonian fluids, boundary layers, chemical reactions, semiconductors, and so on. The growing interest in these problems is reflected by the series of meetings held under the title "Free Boundary Problems: Theory and Applications" (Ox­ ford 1974, Pavia 1979, Durham 1978, Montecatini 1981, Maubuisson 1984, Irsee 1987, Montreal 1990, Toledo 1993, Zakopane 1995, Crete 1997, Chiba 1999). From the proceedings of these meetings, we can learn about the different kinds of mathematical areas that fall within the scope of free boundary problems. It is worth mentioning that the European Science Foundation supported a vast research project on free boundary problems from 1993 until 1999. The recent creation of the specialized journal Interfaces and Free Boundaries: Modeling, Analysis and Computation gives us an idea of the vitality of the subject and its present state of development. This book is a result of collaboration among the authors over the last 15 years.
