Great on the Classics and up to German Idealism ... but weaker after that.

I'm a professor of literature and philosophy, and I've been using Beardsley's text for almost twenty years. It is very, very strong on classical literary criticism, as well as very strong on Kant and German Idealism. And, understandably enough, it's quite strong concerning formalist or New Criticism (a view which Beardsley was central in articulating). I tend to use this text for its coverage of Aristotle and Plato (you cannot do better than this one for a junior/senior level survey in this context). And he handles Romanticism pretty well, though so much has changed in contemporary understandings of the mode of thinking that it's really hard to say how each reader will receive the text. Beardsley's analyses of more contemporary critical schools -- psychoanalysis and neo-Marxism, most notably -- are pretty weak. But the text is some thirty or forty years old, and Professor Beardsley is no longer with us, so we can't hold it against him for failing to discuss, say, Zizek. Beardsley also fails to mention folks like Adorno (who he clearly could have engaged) or any of the French postmoderns. It's just not on his radar, and that's not really a critique. Times change.

Again, a great text for the groundwork. If you want another great text on psychoanalytic criticism, you can't be Elizabeth Wright's text of that name. It's a masterful intro.

Great reference

I am currently working on my own project in aesthetics and hope to teach a course next year. Beardsley's book is a great reference, though I would not use it for a text unless I provided supplements to the class. One needs to see and hear examples of the art being discussed. His discussion of the figures is excellent, yet for an introductory course, one may want to have original sources to read.
What Beardsley does so well is to present every important view in historical context so that the reader gets a good idea of not only what the different views on art are, but why they were developed.
While it may not be a great text, it is a great resource.

A Useful Introduction

I disagree with the previous reviewer. Although it might be possible to write a book that covered only the Major figures in aesthetics--Aristotle, Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, etc--I found this book very useful in getting a grasp of what has been said in the field of aesthetics throughout history, particularly medieval aesthetics, upon which it is very difficult to find information. In some cases, I don't quite agree with Beardsley's interpretation, but again, this is best read as an introduction to more serious studies in Aesthetics. Ultimately, only the primary sources are going to give you an understanding of their contents.

Good, but not really necessary

The photos are excellently reproduced, and the text is well written, but if you've already been digging into Hollywood glamour photography, you probably can figure out lighting setups pretty well without diagrams. The diagrams in this book are good for the most part, although the authors left out a few lighting instruments and included a few that probably should have been omitted. They do sort out some rather confusing lighting rather well, though. If you already have Mark Vieira's book "Hurrell's Hollywood Portraits," you probably don't need this book as a technical guide. However, it does have some nice examples of work by other photogs that you may not have seen.

Very useful guide

This is a fascinating book which has been organized very intelligently. The quick-sketch diagrams displaying the lighting used to create each image not only make it easy to try for a similar look, but also teach the reader how to look at lighting clues in an image in order to reverse-engineer the lighting conditions. While a great many other skills are involved in producing the photos in this book (like how to retouch using a graphite pencil), this is an excellent primer for those already familiar with the basics of studio lighting.

This is a superb book that respectfully attributes the best of Hollywood's photographers for the fine work they did. Additionally, each photo is analyzed and the set-ups proposed for each image so, for learning and experienced portraitists, this is a great book from which to learn HOW the images were made. First rate all the way.

A remarkably detailed historical account

Lilo Quintero Weaver's understated and elegant memoir of growing up in the south during the upheaval and fast-moving changes of the Civil Rights era, told in Darkroom, is stunning, not only for its beautifully rendered imagery but also for its heartfelt text. This is a story told from a unique perspective. Weaver's family, having moved to the States in the `60s from Argentina, are outsiders somewhat to the racial divide they move into. And yet they are part of it as well. Where they fit, and how they fit, in this divided city defines them and makes them unwitting witnesses to a nation in turmoil.

Darkroom is a remarkably detailed historical account. Weaver began the book as an undergrad five years ago. Over time, she filled these pages not just with her own family's personal story, but also the story of the Civil Rights movement itself, told in pieces large and small.

There is much to give this story heft. Weaver wisely lets the story unfold slowly and without great fanfare, focusing instead on the human lives inside it.

Baby Boomers will enjoy this and want to share it with children and grandchildren

I grew up in the Sixties and spent time in the small Alabama town where the author lived. It was a time and place where teenage white boys addressed middle-aged black men by their first names and middle-aged black men addressed teenaged white boys as "siree." The author draws readers in with stark details. She pulls no punches while avoiding a temptation to throw stones. I've known all the types of people she described, in Marion and throughout the world.

I've often reflected on those times, that little town, in my formative years thinking I should write a book to try and explain it as much to myself perhaps as to my grandchildren. Reading Darkroom has helped me process my experiences from a unique perspective, neither that of a white person entrenched in the status quo, nor a black person struggling with American apartheid, but an embedded immigrant observer bearing witness to the darker side of our human condition.

This is an excellent book written and illustrated in the style of the graphic novel. The drawings are beautifully rendered charcoals drawn from 1st-hand experiences. Lila's spellbinding story and masterful drawings of her childhood in the Jim Crow south make the book difficult to put down. While the reading level would be appropriate for children in 4th-8th grade, it is also a great read for any adult or young adult. I highly recommend this book. As an educator, I feel books like Darkroom should be required reading during the middle grades.

Homogenization is a method for modeling processes in microinhomogeneous media, which are encountered in radiophysics, filtration theory, rheology, elasticity theory, and other domains of mechanics, physics, and technology. These processes are described by PDEs with rapidly oscillating coefficients or boundary value problems in domains with complex microstructure. From the technical point of view, given the complexity of these processes, the best techniques to solve a wide variety of problems involve constructing appropriate macroscopic (homogenized) models.

The present monograph is a comprehensive study of homogenized problems, based on the asymptotic analysis of boundary value problems as the characteristic scales of the microstructure decrease to zero. The work focuses on the construction of nonstandard models: non-local models, multicomponent models, and models with memory.

Along with complete proofs of all main results, numerous examples of typical structures of microinhomogeneous media with their corresponding homogenized models are provided. Graduate students, applied mathematicians, physicists, and engineers will benefit from this monograph, which may be used in the classroom or as a comprehensive reference text.

Fantastic Second Book on Number Theory

This book is an excellent second book to Number Theory. If you've already had number theory, you will have seen the topics they are presenting in bits. What this book gives more than anything is CONTEXT. That context is very valuable and can help direct you to future readings.

Most other number theory books are rather ad-hoc. You do some congruences, then you see some quadratic reciprocity, then maybe some neat facts about divisors and perfect numbers. Not so here. While Fine and Rosenburger do tackle those topics, everything is framed in the context of prime numbers. In particular, they take pains to introduce specifically (i) analytic number theory (Including Dirichlet's proof et the prime number theorem), (ii) algebraic number theory, and (iii) additive number theory (Waring problem). They also have a section on cryptography and a proof of the AKS algorithm. There is an entire chapter devoted to nearly 15+ proofs that there are infinitely many primes, using basic techniques as well as more advanced methods from topology and analysis. That alone makes the book a gem.

This book seems better suited as a second book in number theory because of the perspective they take. They look down on number theory from Modern Algebra to give their sweeping panorama. While they do have presentations on things like Ring Theory in the book, if you are seeing that for the first time with this book you will be busy digesting Ring Theory instead of appreciating that perspective. You can also see the context of all the other "random things" that prior books have done.

Overall, a fantastic reference I am glad to have on my shelf. But I wouldn't want to start from here.

Very good, but ...

Though I'm still near the beginning of the book I've been put off by the large number of typos and incorrect statements. It's not hard to work around them, but it is irritating and makes you wish for a good editor to have taken this prior to our reading it. For example on p. 8 there is a range error after Lemma 2.1.1 and on p. 11, Theorem 2.2.1 part (5) contradicts part (4). There is also an error in the commentary later in that page.
The point made by the earlier poster concerning the benefits of context is excellent and certainly saves the book.

"Editors Beisaw and Gibb draw together 14 contributions by historical archaeologists dealing with some less well-known institutions of US and Australian life. These include one-room schoolhouses, almshouses, prisons (wartime and general), insane asylums, and communal societies. All articles, including introductory contributions dealing more generally with theoretical approaches to these institutions, stress that the institutions must be understood by contextualizing them with what can be drawn from the historical record that, they also demonstrate, proves in all cases to be extraordinarily rich. It is only through the historical background that the archaeologist can develop 'histories' of the artifacts recovered through excavation, often quite limited in number and specific in function. Furthermore, in understanding the institutions themselves, archaeologists must engage the shifting and variable understanding of the relations in capitalistic societies because these "minor" institutions, in many ways, reflect power relations that have been variously interpreted. About the Author

Panos J. Antsaklis received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Brown University, where he was a Fulbright Scholar. His main research interests are in the area of systems and control, particularly in linear feedback systems and intelligent autonomous control systems, with emphasis on hybrid and discrete event systems and reconfigurable control. He is currently Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Notre Dame. He has held regular and visiting teaching and research positions at Imperial College of the University of London, Brown University, Rice University, MIT, the National Technical University of Athens, and the Technical University of Crete, Greece.

Dr. Antsaklis has been awarded a departmental outstanding teacher award and has been a keynote speaker at a number of conferences. He is also a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Control Systems Society. Dr. Antsaklis has authored a number of publications in journals, conference proceedings, and books and has coedited five books as well. He has served on the editorial boards of several journals, including the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks, and the Journal of Discrete Event Dynamic Systems, and he has been the guest editor of special issues in these and other journals. Dr. Ansaklis has served as program chair and general chair of major systems and control conferences, and he is an IEEE Fellow and the 1997 President of the IEEE Control Systems Society.

Anthony N. Michel holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Marquette University, as well as a D.Sc. in Applied Mathematics from the Technical University of Graz, Austria. He has extensive industrial and academic experience, and his main research interests are in control systems, circuit theory, neural networks, and applied mathematics. He is currently the Frank M. Freiman Professor of Electrical Engineering and Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Notre Dame.

Dr. Michel has coauthored five books as well as a number of journal articles, conference proceedings, and conference books. He is a former editor of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems, and he has held a variety of positions on the editorial boards of the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks, Circuits, Systems and Signal Processing, and Neurocomputing, as well as other journals. He is a past president of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society and has served on the executive committees of several professional organizations. Dr. Michel is also the recipient of numerous professional awards. He is a Fellow of the IEEE. In 1984 he received the IEEE Centennial Medal, and he also earned three IEEE paper prizes. He spent 1992 as a Fulbright Scholar at the Technical University of Vienna, and, most recently, he received the 1995 Technical Achievement Award of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society.

Good book....

Linear Systems by Antsaklis/ Michel is a comprehensive book on the subject. The best thing about the book is that it does not make too many presumptions about the background of the reader and starts with a detailed introduction to mathematical preliminaries before moving on to the heart of the subject. Proofs are given in detail, and the concurrent treatment of continuous and discrete time systems helps. The only negative point is the fact that no applications are stated in detail. However, the exercise problems contain a variety of them to satiate the inquisitive reader. A must have!

Don't buy this book...get "Math into Latex" instead

This is basically just a subset of Gratzer's larger book. Not to say this book isn't good, but it's worth spending a few extra dollars to get the complete book.

Short, but concise,primer

This rather inexpensive book is an excellent introduction to LaTeX and AMSLaTeX. While the author boasts that a friend of his typeset a mathematics article in one weekend with a copy of the book manuscript--a dubious claim that could not possibly be true except for the simplest of articles--it is still a nice first book on the macro language. In a lot of ways it is like "Learning LaTeX" and has similar coverage. I like that one too. If given the choice, I'd have to pick one of these two or Diller's book to start. Diller, though longer and more comprehensive, is just as easy to understand and may be the choice for the person with needs more ambitious than producing that weekend article.

Very helpful!

Definitely very helpful booklet for starting up in LaTeX and this book teaches you how to write LaTeX document in very efficient and neat way, while the book is less than 100 pages (excluding appendixes and indexes)!!
You can grasp the basic idea and begin writing LaTeX document in 3 days if you are working pretty hard on that!
Very nice book for beginner!
