A New Standard for Outdoor/Nature

Finally, there is a book for reference from an author who actually does this and "gets it". If you're just getting started and the outdoors is your interest, this is close to perfect for the exposure basics, framing, composition and guidelines for both the proper equipment and procedures necessary.

A lot less emphasis on needing this lens to take this shot, but this is a shot you can take with this lens. And this is how it's done. More of an outdoor photographer's style and approach. We have to carry this stuff and know why.

I don't think there is an example photo in the book that I haven't taken in one way or another. That's what impresses me. I've tried everything outdoors imagineable and Arbabi covers it "all". And explains and emphasizes the procedure in the preferable, "this is how I do it, you can do it too". If you have a reasonable, initial understanding of the basics of exposure, you should have no problem applying that concept to outdoor situations. In fact, one could "almost" learn exposure based on this book as a stand alone, but I don't think that is the author's intent.

The fundamentals of exposure are probably better addressed with a more dedicated issue like the author's own "Better Photo Guide to Exposure" which I do not have, or my personal favorite Jeff Wignall's "Exposure Photo Workshop", to whom I'll forever be in debt.

Sean Arbabi puts considerable time and effort into the more physical aspect of outdoor/nature photography with chapters and tips throughout that describe gear handling and safety that are often overlooked or not discussed. You've got to have been in those situations to realize how important this is. Nature isn't always nice.

I like the fact that the book has very little devoted to editing/photoshop, but concentrates on the business at hand rather than the "create it in photoshop" approach. Again, more of the outdoor style. If I didn't see something that caught my attention, why shoot it and try to make nature look un/natural in a computer. Sure, he describes HDR and panorama/stitching, but it's not the end all, be all of nature photography.

Now, I can't really say this book has many of those "nuggets" of info that would surprise a hard core, experienced outdoor photographer or the "pro forum expert" crowd will be quoting, but having learned this stuff myself from the "school of hard knocks", this book will definitely reduce the learning curve of a beginner/amateur or someone new to outdoor photography.

Lighting, from daylight to midday to direction is mentioned, even camouflage and expressions from wildlife are covered. I think the only thing not covered is whether to wear leather lined or gortex hiking boots.

I just can't believe how valuable this information can be to a beginner at outdoor photography, whether using a dslr, an m4/3 or even a point and shoot. You simply can't learn this stuff indoors.

For us know-it-all, battle scarred veterans of those unique, outdoor challenges, it's still an excellent refresher, reminder and pleasant read from cover to cover.

This book was my Christmas gift, and it is, in more ways than one. Excellent.

Excellent Landscape Guide

This is probably the best guide to nature and landscape photography I have read. For the first and most important thing, Arbabi's images are outstanding. I enjoy photography books mainly for the images. If the photographer wins me over with the pictures, I am ready to soak up his words of advice. So, second to the pictures are the words. In this case, Arbabi does an excellent job narrating the ins and outs of getting those memorable shots. The lessons proceed organically, that is, without feeling he is going down a list of topics. Rather, he moves along seemingly naturally explaining his approach. It just so happens that he does cover all the hot topics, basic and more advanced. Although he does discuss macro and wildlife photography very well, I consider the book more of a landscape primer and most of the book is devoted to capturing these gorgeous views. The only negative point is something that has maybe just to do with me. I shoot using a D90, a crop sensor camera. All of his images are taken using either a medium-format or full frame camera. Although he provides lens, shutter speed, and aperture info for each image, he does not always specify the camera. Since he does not discuss the differences between the cameras, I was not able to figure out how I would apply his settings to my camera. To be specific, how does f 32 on a medium format camera translate to my aps-c camera? Besides that one minor issue, the book is beautiful and well-written, really a must read for anyone interested in the topic.

Best Photography Book I've Read

Although this is not Sean Arbabi's first publication, it is the first of his books that I read (I am not new to photo books, I have read several by different authors.) Cover to cover... I ate this book up. It is full of useful information that can be tried immediately as each chapter is followed by an "assignment". Some of the material was refresher for me as I have been a hobbyist photographer for ten years, but it delves into more than your basic photographic information. I would give this book top reviews for the content alone but the images within are coffeetable appropriate. I had to use exraordinary self discipline to refrain from flipping ahead just to look at the amazing photos on almost every page! Every gorgeous image not only illustrates the topic, but includes all the shooting data as well ~ ie. focal length, apperture, shutter speed, ISO, filters when used, and exposures. I could not wait to turn the page. I learned alot from both content and the images. After reading this book I ordered his first one, The Better Photo Guide to Exposure.

Innovative, clear, well written trigonomety textbook

I enjoyed this textbook, especially the way some subjects were so well explained. Not only does this text cover a good bit of material, but it also reveals the way in which the author thinks about this subject. I have noticed, both with this text and the previous two which I have commented on, that certain aspects of the subject become much more transparent or understandable when reexamined with a keener mathematical ability than, at least I possessed, when I was first exposed to these subjects in high school. I had no special interest in math at that time. The limited reexposure one has to trigonomety and geometry as one learns new areas of mathematics in college doesn't seem to do justice to these foundation areas of math.

Terrific!

Finally - a trig book that doesn't talk down to students. Gelfand treats his readers as intellegent, curious, and competent. This goes far ... especially with kids.

Most other trig books are written by educational consultants who view the subject as a odorous swamp that you have to slog through. They distract the reader with glitzy graphics and useless photos. No such chartjunk here. It's from someone who loves the subject, and places the mathematics first.

I feel like an avuncular mathematician is showing me the delights of trig ... indeed, he seems to revel in sines, cosines, and tangents. Several of the problems have tickled my 10 year old son: "Dad! Did you know that the area under the first half of the sine curve is exactly 2?"

Aaah. Now *that's* a great trig book!

Outstanding Math Text

I rarely compose reviews even if I happen to really appreciate a book. But THIS is one of those rare exceptions!Gelfand (who also happens to rank among the 20th Century's most renowned and prolific Mathematicians ... I noticed that no reviewer has mentioned this little fact) has written an exceptionally clear and concise, easy to read and to digest text concerning Trigonometry with advancement to higher education in mind. The perfectly logical format and development is novel, very inspiring, coaxing the reader to read on and on and one truly begins to learn right from the first sentence. The reader requires little in the way of prior knowledge and yet, I am convinced, will come away with an enthusiasm for this subject (and hopefully for Mathematics in general).

I am a member of a Mathematical Honor Society and of the Mathematical Association of America but I must confess that I was a poor math student, had some very poor teachers and, thanks to some inspiring individuals along the way, managed to discover the real magic and beauty of Math before it was too late (although I have spent the better portion of my professional life compensating for the failures of my former teachers!).

This text represents the way Math should be taught in schools. I believe that any frustrated math student will benefit from this text (and probably the other texts also by Gelfand).

The Caribbean Basin is home to numerous linguistic and cultural traditions and fluid interactions that often map imperfectly onto former colonial and national traditions. Reading this book is like having a several hour, sit down with Elyse and having someone take down every word for you.

For someone who doesn't have the opportunity to spend all day with a rep of the Elyse's caliber and hire someone to take notes, this book is the next best thing (or maybe even better).

If you want to grow your photo business you need this book first and you should also get the new book by Amanda Sosa Stone and Suzanne Sease, who worked with Elyse and still work as photo reps/negotiators.

The best I've seen so far

I first looked at this book in the library and then later put it on hold for the next available copy and it's going to take months before I get to read it again since there is such a long waiting list for the book. I think it is the best book I've seen so far on Marketing and Promotion for Photographers. Elysee Wiesberg what a gem you are for passing on this invaluable information! Good practical information and advice for the business side of photography. Glossy issue with great photos. I think I'm going to buy it since it will make a great reference book.

This book is very advanced. I would recommend reading "Cells, Gels, and the Engines of Life" by Gerald Pollack before tackling this book. Pollacks books has allot of pictures to illustrate the concepts in this book. Eventhough this book has many illustrations, it goes into great detail. A simple concept is that you have bulk water and structured water. The charges of our proteins determines what type of water structure surrounds it. Then it gets complicated. This understanding leads to miniture motors, pumps, communications systems, etc. It can even violate the second law of thermodynamics by reducing the energy for chemical reactions (free ride), etc. This physics will be the basis of future medicine once the rest of the scientific community figures it out. Urry discusses his discoveries of mechanical accoustic resonances that occur within elastic proteins. These resonances will occur at different frequencies depending upon whether strutured water is present or not. Take note of this if you know anything about homeopathy. This acoustic phenomenia may be the means how the mysterious patent US6541978 by Jacques Benveniste: "Method, system and device for producing signals from a substance" works. It may also relate to Wave Genetics, Peter Gariaev, US20070258329. Our morphogenetic field may also be involved with this discovery. The third part explains the Fourier transform and then demonstrates how to apply basic Fourier analysis to designing and analyzing mathematical wavelets. Particular attention is paid to Daubechies wavelets.

Numerous exercises, a bibliography, and a comprehensive index
combine to make this book an excellent text for the classroom as well as a valuable resource for self-study.

Disappointing! Not at all Wavelets made "easy".

This book was quite a disappointment. It was not, as titled, Wavelets Made Easy. Despite the author's claims to the contrary, the book was not easy to read, largely due to the strongly professional mathematician's approach with unnecessarily obscure and involved notation. Later in the book the author adopted the mathematical formalism of proposition, proof, and lemma which is out of place in an introductory text aimed at non-mathematicians. Though the book treats a variety of applications of wavelets, little attention is paid to the background for these applications. Again, mathematical formalism takes precedence. Not recommended except perhaps for mathematicians, and for these, better texts are available.

The complex cannot be made easy, but it can be made clear

When I first saw this book, which is heavy on equations, I thought "wow, if this is wavelets made easy, I'd hate to see the hard version". And indeed this book is not light reading. But it is clear and there are plenty of examples. This book is far and away the best book on wavelets that I've found.
Wavelets are a complex topic. It would be unfair to think that you can pick up a book like this an read it like a popular science book. Reading a book like this takes concentration and effort. Implementing wavelet software is even more work, since some of the "in-place" algorithms are difficult. "Wavelets Made Easy" is a great foundation for anyone who wants to apply Haar wavelets for data analysis and filtering.

Nievergelt's coverage of Daubechies wavelets is not as
good as his coverage of Haar. He clearly explains the matrix
(linear algebra) view of Daubechies wavelets. The
coverage of edge effect issues is also good. However, as the
chapter proceeds, it fell apart, at least for me. There
appear to be errors in some of the algorithms. For example,
Nievergelt uses an average of the input time series over the
Daubechies wavelet. As far as I can see, this average cannot
be inverted to yield the original time series. Nievergelt's
Daubechies algorithm also does not seem to match algorithms
like the one published in Numerical Recipies.
So in summary, I'd say that this is a book that started out
well in the first few chapters but became less useful as
I worked through it.

Excellent.

The book is excellent in the sense that it has the right mixture of both theoretic and practical aspects. The portions on Fourier transforms also are apt for a newcomer to understand the theory. Of course, the first impression formed by seeing the title is that the matter inside would be plain english without any mathematics. However, the mathematics in the book has been kept elementary and in places where that wasn't possible, a thorough introduction has been provided.
The applications are explicitly mentioned and algorithms are written down clearly, instead of simply providing the theory and leaving the implementation for the student to figure out for himself. For the less mathematically oriented, the exercises at the end of each chapter will provide a good intuition to what will be encountered in the consequent sections. Once this book is read, other books that concentrate on specific aspects of wavelets will appear to be more understandable.

Rhetorical Homologies explores the central meaning of this form in a variety of discourses and also examines the kind of homologies that shape audience responses to personal, public, and political issues. Barry Brummett is most interested in homologies among very different orders of experience and texts: experiences on the battlefield that are homologous to those at a dining room table, for instance. What the common patterns that underlie such cases mean, why they are interesting, and why homology is rhetorical are the subjects of this study.

Brummett focuses on a wide range of topics, from the homologies between rhetoric and weapons throughout history to the homology of ritual injuries as manifested in representations of Christian martyrs, Laurel and Hardy films, the African-American practice of playing the dozens, and televised professional wrestling. Brummett also explores the homology of the Wise Woman, using rhetorical representations of Sojourner Truth and Oprah Winfrey. In a concluding chapter, Brummett argues that the idea of homology is important in understanding how social life is organized in general and that the centrality of discourse in organizing experience makes rhetorical homologies an important perspective for general knowledge beyond the boundaries of this study.

A conference on Analytic Number Theory and Diophantine Problems was held from June 24 to July 3, 1984 at the Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. The conference was funded by the National Science Foundation, the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Mathematics at Oklahoma State University. The papers in this volume represent only a portion of the many talks given at the conference. The principal speakers were Professors E. Bombieri, P. X. Gallagher, D. Goldfeld, S. Graham, R. Greenberg, H. Halberstam, C. Hooley, H. Iwaniec, D. J. Lewis, D. W. Masser, H. L. Montgomery, A. Selberg, and R. C. Vaughan. Of these, Professors Bombieri, Goldfeld, Masser, and Vaughan gave three lectures each, while Professor Hooley gave two. Special sessions were also held and most participants gave talks of at least twenty minutes each. Prof. P. Sarnak was unable to attend but a paper based on his intended talk is included in this volume. We take this opportunity to thank all participants for their (enthusiastic) support for the conference. Judging from the response, it was deemed a success. As for this volume, I take responsibility for any typographical errors that may occur in the final print. I also apologize for the delay (which was due to the many problems incurred while retyping all the papers). A. special thanks to Dollee Walker for retyping the papers and to Prof. W. H. Jaco for his support, encouragement and hard work in bringing the idea of the conference to fruition.

In these cases we have to identify the system on line and to adjust the control in accordance with the model which is supposed to be approaching the true system during the process of identification. This is why there has been an increasing interest in identification and adaptive control for stochastic systems from both theorists and practitioners.
