Very brief...but has a lot of stuffs in it

This is a well-balanced book with ample examples, sketches on some theoretical details and notes on some important applications. If you have been exposed to linear algebra previously, the first few parts may look like a scaled-down version of Hoffman. The next few ones you may identify with some problems in quantum mechanics, etc. that somehow had frustrated you a bit. However, the topics it covers are rather comprehensive. A beginning student may need a good set of lectures & tutorials to accompany with. But this might make a good intermediary between the elementary matrix theory and the more advanced & systematic linear algebra. For a person like me who sometimes needs to refresh the memory it worked fine.

It is as­ sumed that the student, before reading this book, has had courses in me­ chanics (statics, dynamics) and strength of materials (mechanics of mate­ rials). It is written at a level for undergraduate and beginning graduate engineering students in mechanical, civil, or aerospace engineering. As a background in mathematics, readers are expected to have had courses in ad­ vanced calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations. Our experience in teaching elasticity theory to engineering students leads us to believe that the course must be problem-solving oriented. We believe that formulation and solution of the problems is at the heart of elasticity theory. 1 Of course orientation to problem-solving philosophy does not exclude the need to study fundamentals. By fundamentals we mean both mechanical concepts such as stress, deformation and strain, compatibility conditions, constitu­ tive relations, energy of deformation, and mathematical methods, such as partial differential equations, complex variable and variational methods, and numerical techniques. We are aware of many excellent books on elasticity, some of which are listed in the References. If we are to state what differentiates our book from other similar texts we could, besides the already stated problem-solving ori­ entation, list the following: study of deformations that are not necessarily small, selection of problems that we treat, and the use of Cartesian tensors only.

Good but not user friendly

I bought this book in order to improve my knowledge on the mathematical frame supporting the engineering formulas used in mechanical and construction design. And the assumptions and simplifications used to get them. The first 3 chapters, about stress, strain and Hooke law match what I was looking for, and chapter 5 showing examples of general problems has some of that formulas as result of specific boundary conditions.
It is not an easy task to read it however. It could have more steps detailing the formula deductions. And some (not many) of them are wrong, and until be sure of this it is a long time trying to reach them in the way that they are written.

what I was looking for.

Do a search for "quantum computing" on amazon and you'll find a lot of duff books. I wanted an exposition that begins with the simplest possible mathematics and the least possible necessary background in quantum theory, and progresses nicely into being able to comprehend papers in the field. Here it is. All you need to carry around with this is a nice, rigorous linear algebra text (I recommend FIS). Word 'em up.

Not for a Computer Scientist or Mathematician

who don't have a strong background in Physics. The first "basic" example is a particle spin interaction that displays quantum entanglement. Well, maybe that's easy for a physics major, but a math and computer science major will be totally clueless! It assumes too much quantum physics for non-physics people, myself included. Quantum Computing by Mika Hirvensalo is a much better starting point for these who have traditional background in math and computer science. Also, if you want to build a good intuition about quantum systems before doing algorithms, QED by Richard Feynman would be a good reading for the same audience.

A handful of good introductions to ideas in quantum computing have appeared in the past two years. The present one stands out in being both friendly and brief. There is no way into the subject, getting around the fundamentals in quantum physics and in math. Through this little book, an uninitiated reader can get some insight into the ideas of Deutsch-Jozsa, and the algorithms of Peter Shor and Lov Grover. The author does his job, as well as any, and the book is pleasant reading.

Richard P. Hallion retired as Senior Advisor for Air and Space Issues, Directorate for Security, Counterintelligence and Special Programs Oversight at the Pentagon. The Development of Tactical Air Power Examined.

I found "Strike From the Sky" and interesting study of tactical air power in the period from the introduction of military aviation through to the end of WWII. The subject is not nearly so well covered as strategic airpower, even though its impact is more self evident. I found the discussion of the use of tactical aviation during the interwar years particularly interesting because the topic is rarely discussed in popular histories. The book took a dry academic approach, which was suitable for the author's purpose, but I find the experiences of people caught up in conflict as least as important as the tactical impact of technology, so, from that perspective the work as lacking. Still, I found it enlightening.

H-infinity engineering continues to establish itself as a discipline of applied mathematics. As such, this extensively illustrated monograph makes a significant application of  H-infinity theory to electronic amplifier design, demonstrating how recent developments in  H-infinity engineering equip amplifier designers with new tools and avenues for research.

The amplification of a weak, noisy, wideband signal is a canonical problem in electrical engineering. Given an amplifier, matching circuits must be designed to maximize gain, minimize noise, and guarantee stability. These competing design objectives constitute a multiobjective optimization problem. Because the matching circuits are H-infinity functions, amplifier design is really a problem in  H-infinity multiobjective optimization.

To foster this blend of mathematics and engineering, the author begins with a careful review of required circuit theory for the applied mathematician. This thesis was published as the pa­ per "Extension theory of differential operators I", the first paper reprinted in this volume. Rota's early work was in analysis, more specifically, in operator theory, differ­ ential equations, ergodic theory, and probability theory. In the 1960's, Rota was motivated by problems in fluctuation theory to study some operator identities of Glen Baxter (see [7]). Together with other problems in probability theory, this led Rota to study combinatorics. His series of papers, "On the foundations of combi­ natorial theory", led to a fundamental re-evaluation of the subject. Later, in the 1990's, Rota returned to some of the problems in analysis and probability theory which motivated his work in combinatorics. This was his intention all along, and his early death robbed mathematics of his unique perspective on linkages between the discrete and the continuous. Glimpses of his new research programs can be found in [2,3,6,9,10].
