Configurations that have a relatively high ballistic coefficient (such as slender reentry vehicles) and reenter the atmosphere at relatively high angles of attack experience severe heating rates and high dynamic pressures, but only for a short period of time. For these vehicles, continuum flow models incorporating equi librium chemistry are reasonable.

Great book on exposure

I love the way Bryan Peterson writes his books. They are so down to earth in their explanations. He has also included so much information without cluttering the writing. So many photo books talk way above the normal--just learning-- person. That will cause the person to get discouraged instead of being encouraged in the photography field. I can speak from that first hand. I have purchased books to try to be a better photographer only to find the more I read the more confused I became. The way that "Understanding Exposure" is written, it does not do that. It is written all the way to the end with the basic photographer in mind. It is not to say that more advanced photographers can not gain extra knowledge from this book, by all means they can== with all the hints it is a wealth of information. I love the photo examples along with the settings that were used on the camera. The photos are beautiful.It has sections for shutter speed, aperture,light as well as special techniques and filters. It even has a chapter on film vs. digital. The opening chapter is just that, an introduction to exposure. So many times it is the exposure settings we can not get right and this book will definitely do the job. I have a much better understanding of what the basic terms are and how they are applied. I keep this book handy as there are times I second guess myself and this is a great go back to reference as well. I think if you are a beginning photographer or a seasoned veteran you can still pick up some great ideas from this book

Inspiring, non-techical

This book is an enjoyable, quick read. It contains many color plates, accompanied by text, that clearly demonstrate photographic choices such as (esp) depth-of-field, and shutter-speed.

The book frequently presents sets of photographs of identical scenes, taken with automatic and manual camera settings, which are used to explicate the shortcomings of generic one-size-fits-all point-and-shoot (P&S) camera automation that can frustrate artistic intent or expectations. More usefully, the book describes rules-of-thumb approaches using commonly available camera features that can compensate.

Among the book's strengths is motivating why and when to depart from P&S automation. As such, it may be especially useful to folks (like me) who are transitioning from a digital P&S to a more capable camera.

The book content avoids technical details, and offers good tips for an intermediate photographer, most accompanied by useful broad-brush techniques and memorable analogies that I have found helpful in my subsequent picture-taking. The book's focus is on taking "correct-by-design" pictures, with a bias against subsequent manipulation (digital or film), but does skim over such possibilities.

On a negative note, I was somewhat disappointed that the technical specifications on several interesting pictures lacked complete EXIF-type information (usu: lens, ISO, lens/focal length, camera). Among other omissions, this lack makes it difficult to tell when a given photographc was taken with a true full-frame 35mm camera (APS) vs the common digital APS-C format, or something else, entirely.

As an additional nit, the book suffers from its generality: I'd like to have seen more specifics on working through the flaws of a specific, less-capable (digital) camera+lens, as opposed to the approach taken which broadly distinguishes between film vs. digital but avoids details (presumably to avoid offending camera manufacturers).

Finally, as a digital photographer, I definitely would appreciate more information on histogram/values interpretation, better guidelines on what is/isn't recoverable by post-processing, and in general, a slightly less purist approach to the world of fixing up pictures up after the fact.

For folks new to the world of photography, I'd highly recommend this book. For folks with more experience, I'd suggest looking elsewhere (and let me know where!). For Amazon, how about a slightly more sophisticated system that allows reviewers to better express a newbie/intermediate/expert rating?

Essential For Beginners (and Beginners Only)

As an advanced enthusiast, I have bought this book after reading quite positive reviews about it here and elsewhere. I was hoping that it would offer a lot that I was missing. Apparently, my expectations were too high.

The book is good in terms of the general writing style, the examples & the explanations. The production quality (paper, typesetting, color separations) are also fine. I believe it contains a wealth of information which are presented nicely and in a logical order. This can make this book (considering its not too expensive price) a very welcome offer for "beginners". For "advanced" users (who might have read similar books before, who were shooting even before the digital age etc.) it has very limited appeal. This is probably fine since the author (& the publisher) probably had the beginners as their potential customers in mind. Unfortunately, this is not even implied by the title...

The book is revised to accommodate some info on "digital" cameras. There is even a short chapter comparing film & digital towards the end of the book. However, digital technology evolves too fast to allow books like this to remain current for more than a year or two. Five years is too much in this respect... The comments on digital approach are offered in a sketchy manner here and there and there is still too much info on film which is used by a minority nowadays. I do use film and I am not criticising the author for including such info. What I am trying to say is that a revised version based on digital camera exposures with additional info on film would be much better.

Peterson makes generalizations thoroughout the book. Most of these are necessary and helpful for the beginners and prevents them from getting confused by details and exceptions. However, he rarely declares that he is oversimplifying things. This can be misleading like his below sentences (from page 68) show: "To produce a background of out-of-focus circles, you must use a wide open aperture. This is the only aperture that is 100 percent circular in shape. All other apertures are hexagonal". The generalizations here are plain wrong. (Readers can see an image with an "octagonal aperture", for example, on page 91).

These criticisms are minor as long as the potential buyer is a beginner since the "basics" of exposure are essentially the same for film and digital. This book provides the necessary information for them in a concise manner. However, for advanced shooters, there is little info here that they might have missed before.

The second meeting took place June 1-10, 1987, at the same location. At the plenary session of this meeting it was decided that future meetings should have a principal theme. The theme for the third meeting (June 1- 10, 1989, Kupuri) was Karamata's Regular Variation. The principal theme for the fourth meeting (June 1-10, 1990, Kupuri) was Inner Product and Convexity Structures in Analysis, Mathematical Physics, and Economics. The fifth meeting was to have had the theme, Analysis and Foundations, organized in cooperation with Professor A. Blass (June 1-10, 1991, Kupuri).

Although blood substitutes represent a goal that has been sought for more than a century, their development is now on the cutting edge of biotechnology: beyond biochemistry and molecular biology, these products are being integrated into the larger physiological picture of gas transport that is essential to every living organism. New products will find obvious clinical application, since they overcome many of the problems with blood transfusion, such as the need to crossmatch, storage limitations, and the risk of transmission of infectious disease. As work continues to bring this new class of products to market, discoveries have been made about very basic aspects of how red blood cells work with regard to the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide and interactions with molecules such as nitric oxide and carbon monoxide which may mediate contractility of smooth muscle. These new challenges are being met with impressive rapidity as products are readied for testing and introduction into clinical use. As more is understood about the general properties of artificial blood substitutes, attention is focusing on applications which will benefit the most from their availability. This volume is a collection of chapters by researchers currently working in the field of blood substitutes and closely related fields. Each of them focuses on current challenges from a different perspective, from the clinical question, "What is the target?", to detailed descriptions of the interactions with nitric oxide, endotoxin, and carbon dioxide. Included in the volume is a review of the peer-reviewed research published in 1995 and a general discussion of current products and potential clinical applications. Takentogether, these chapters provide an up-to-date picture of this rapidly evolving field.

The Lagrangian and Eulerian descriptions of a continuum, tensors of strains and stresses, conservation laws for mass, momentum, moment of momentum, and energy are the examples of such concepts and results. This list should be augmented by the first and second laws of thermodynamics, which determine the character and direction of processes at a given point of a continuum. The availability of the conservation laws is conditioned by the homogeneity and isotrop icity properties of the Euclidean space, and the form of these laws is related to the Newton's laws. The laws of thermodynamics have their foundation in the statistical physics.

This book presents the basic concepts of continuum mechanics. The material is presented in a tensor invariant form with a large number of problems with solutions. The book integrates the use of the computer algebra system Mathematica, and contains a large number of programs on the disk that will help clarify the concepts of continuum mechanics.(taken from the author)

Should be reqired reading for those less than 20

This is a very good book for those of us who are historians. The South has shown that it will give up on its past with extreme difficulty. I am a very proud Southerner and love the region and the people in it, as I am one of Its sons. Reading this book and living in the South today make you realize that the past live on due to the isolation of the different groups and the insular lives that sparse population provides, making ways of thinking llve on until those lives are gone. We will see a very different South in 20 years because thouse thoughts will die and new people will move in. Still for us historians to look at how much has changed is very special. Should be required reading in most liberal arts schools for those less than 20 years old.

The focus of this book is on filtering for linear processes, and its primary goal is to design filters from a class of linear stable unbiased filters that yield an estimation error with the lowest root-mean-square (RMS) norm. Various hierarchical classes of filtering problems are defined based on the availability of statistical knowledge regarding noise, disturbances, and other uncertainties.

An important characteristic of the approach employed in this work for several aspects of filter analysis and design is structural in nature, revealing an inherent freedom to incorporate other classical secondary engineering constraints―such as placement of filter poles at desired locations―in filter design. Such a structural approach requires an understanding of powerful tools that then may be used in several engineering applications besides filtering.

good book with programming

as i feel this book covers the fundamentals needed for
proper understanding of wavelets. then it clearely brings
out the topics such as mra, filter bank approaches along
with matlab programs using which one can actually generate
and feel the wavelet concept. in this way the book creates
interest in the reader. Along with this one can also
use wavelets by gopinath and barrus or by goswami.

First let me say this is an excellent book for a graduate class about Wavelets! As a Doctoral Student I have limited funds, but this book I had to purchase, and did. I've used Wickerhauser, Strang & Nguyen, Cohen, and other texts for my references but yours is well thought out and "clear". The chapter about Over Complete Wavelets and the Matlab GUI makes this a complete guide to wavelets.

Good intermediate level introduction to Frames

The book cover the basic theories of frames well and is not overburdened with proofs. The first 5-6 chapters flows well and does not require a lot of background besides linear algebra.

The best chapters for me personally is ch.13 and ch.16 - "Frames and Multiresolution Analysis", "Approximation of the Inverse Frame Operator". While it does not cover some of the modern efficient methods for frames with specialized structures it covered the important case of a general frame.

I wish the book treated tight frames a little more. Besides their practical application, tight frames give us a good perspective on what we are gaining and losing from the general frame to a tight frame if we focus on the Parseval equation as well as what the inverse frame operator is like for both.

Interested readers should consider the excellent textbook "Frames for Undergraduates" also. It covers tight frames a little better and give intuition as to why they are important by focusing on the Parseval property. Frames for Undergraduates (Student Mathematical Library)

The subject of the book is a new tool in math, with a host of exciting applications. Of course, the subject has roots in classical ideas from harmonic analysis. But the book covers an explosive and exciting variety of developments since roughly 1990, and it is presented in the form of a graduate text. The basic idea begins with linear algebra, and progresses to expansions in function spaces, and multiresolutions. It will be useful to anyone who wants to learn from scratch about the underlying principles, the new results, and the applications. It is well written. A student of mine picked it up accidentally from my desk, and couldn't put it down. After awhile, he had completely forgotten what he came to see me about. It could have been some of the applications, such as antenna theory, wavelets, time-frequency analysis, uses in Radar, speech processing...

The theory of operators stands at the intersection of the frontiers of modern analysis and its classical counterparts; of algebra and quantum mechanics; of spectral theory and partial differential equations; of the modern global approach to topology and geometry; of representation theory and harmonic analysis; and of dynamical systems and mathematical physics. The present collection of papers represents contributions to a conference, and they have been carefully selected with a view to bridging different but related areas of mathematics which have only recently displayed an unexpected network of interconnections, as well as new and exciting cross-fertilizations. Our unify ing theme is the algebraic view and approach to the study of operators and their applications. The complementarity between the diversity of topics on the one hand and the unity of ideas on the other has been stressed. Some of the longer contributions represent material from lectures (in expanded form and with proofs for the most part). However, the shorter papers, as well as the longer ones, are an integral part of the picture; they have all been carefully refereed and revised with a view to a unity of purpose, timeliness, readability, and broad appeal.
