Rip-off !!!!

This was a complete waste of money...

Ok, this guys make a conference and then publish the proceedings...

The papers (I mean "chapters") are quite specialized. The claim in

the back cover that "relevant ideas are introduced in a self-contained

manner and only a knowledge of calculus and linear algebra is assumed"

is just a straight lie. My interested in the book was chapter 12,

systems of partial differential equations but I obtained just a brief

summary of the theory that is not useful at all.

"The title of this book my be somewhat misleading-- as an edited volume, it contains several papers on some issues in quantitative finance.  Most contributions have a computational/numerical slant.  It is no surprise that several papers concentrate on heavy-tailed models, in particular Pareto-type models figure prominently. For me, the highlight is the paper by Kohatsu-Higa and Montero on "Malliavan Calculus in Finance". This seventy plus page paper gives a very readable introduction to this imporatnt field of current research.  A further enjoyable paper is "Modern Heuirstics for Finance Problems: A Survey of Selected Mehtods and Applications: by Schlottmann and Seese."

WONDERFUL,WONDERFUL,WONDERFUL

Great book to learn from I have a lot of the books in the series. I have used the books to learn photography. The format is very good I like the fact that at the end of each lesson you have an assignment or two to do. The books are easy to understand not complicated written for the average joe on the street and filed with lots of encouragement. The book's are written by professionals. so the person knows the subject they are writing about. I use the books also for reference so don't get ride of them when you finish it. I have been using the book for the past 3 years. ( Amphoto book's are wonderful) 3 years a go I wanted to learn Photography not just take pictures so I tried to find a class. could not. But with this book and the others in the series I put together a course of study for myself to take me to were I want to be.

This book and The BetterPhoto Guide to Exposure are the BEST in the Series

I'll tell you I have struggled all my Shooting life to understand why certain shots worked and others didn't. I was usually a guess. Well, when I found out that my camera was trying to make EVERYTHING (highlights and shadows) in the viewfinder 18% grayI went Huh?!? Secondly, When I found out that you should meter for the 18% equivalent of your MAIN subject I went - OH!?!

Veb- len's Analysis Situs, published in 1931, is about general combinato- rial topology. But its first two chapters, on "Linear graphs" and "Two-Dimensional Complexes", are almost exclusively concerned with the territory still explored by graph theorists. Rouse Ball's Mathematical Recreations and Essays told, usually without proofs, of the major graph-theoretical advances ofthe nineteenth century, of the Five Colour Theorem, of Petersen's Theorem on I-factors, and of Cayley's enumerations of trees. It was Rouse Ball's book that kindled my own graph-theoretical enthusiasm. The graph-theoretical papers of Hassler Whitney, published in 1931-1933, would have made an excellent textbook in English had they been collected and published as such. But the honour of presenting Graph Theory to the mathe- matical world as a subject in its own right, with its own textbook, belongs to Denes Konig. Low was the prestige of Graph Theory in the Dirty Thirties. It is still remembered, with resentment now shading into amuse- ment, how one mathematician scorned it as "The slums of Topol- ogy".

on downtown Mobile, where Hoffman's grandparents arrived as immigrants
a century ago; the waterfront where longshoremen labor and shrimpers work
their nets; the back roads leading to obscure but intriguing destinations.
Hoffman records local people telling their own tales of race relations,
sports, agriculture, and Mardi Gras celebrations. Fishermen, baseball players,
bakers, authors, political figures--a strikingly diverse population walks

After 21 years in New York City, Roy Hoffman (Almost Family) returned with his wife and daughter to his hometown of Mobile, Ala. Back Home: Journeys Through Mobile is a collection of his writings feature stories, memoirs, essays about the town, many of which were previously published in the Mobile Register. Hoffman interviews many of Mobile's distinctive characters, like Joseph Langan, a longtime Mobile mayor now in his 80s, who was once vilified as a Communist by whites who thought he was too sympathetic to blacks, and a racist by blacks who didn't agree. Herbert Aaron Sr., father of the great home-run hitter Hank Aaron, tells Hoffman why so many great baseball players are Mobile sons. These stories were written to explore what Hoffman calls a "sense of place," and they eloquently answer the question that so troubles the author upon his return: "[W]hat's left to tell me where I am?"

Hoffman (Almost Family), who had left his hometown and lived in the New York metropolitan area for 20 years, returned to the South when the Mobile Register offered him a job as "writer-in-residence." Here he collects essays, a memoir, and feature articles originally published in the Mobile Register, New York Times, Southern Living, and other publications. Hoffman's work transcends region while celebrating it. He writes about what makes Mobile and its inhabitants both the descendants of the town's founders and the newcomers a rarity. The best traditions of this unhomogenized city Mardi Gras, the bay, good food, fine storytellers, and Southern hospitality are traits that newcomers adopt rather than ignore. Hoffman, whose grandparents came to the city as immigrants, has a special affection for other newcomers, and it is impossible to miss the humanity in this collection. Sketches of Mobile

Back Home is a series of vignettes that Roy Hoffman published in the Mobile Press-Register and other outlets during the 1990s. Hoffman grew up in Mobile, and then moved away to attend college at Tulane University and to work for the New York Times. Back Home connects Mobile's past and present.

Hoffman is a strong writer and readers will find very few missteps in his prose. The story is very personal to Hoffman, and he often interjects his family and himself into the stories; the "personal" side of Back Home gives the book an added dimension. Also, readers will enjoy the wide variety of topics that Hoffman covers. I particularly liked the sketches of former mayor Joe Langan (who attempted to steer Mobile through desegregation and angered both blacks and whites), the bar pilots (who help guide large freighters to the docks in Mobile Bay), and Mobile's Mardi Gras.

While I recommend Back Home, there are some drawbacks. The sketches are of varying quality. Inevitably, Back Home has a "choppy" quality as well. The sketches quickly move from topic to topic and this can be jarring to the reader. Finally, the sketches concerning Mobile's present are not as strong the sketches on the past.

Mobilians will enjoy Back Home. I know of no other book that captures the soul of "The Azalea City" so well.

You Can Go Home Again

Roy Hoffman has disproved the theory that you can't go home again. With the turn of each page, I'm transported from central Texas to the city of my birth. His book, BACK HOME : JOURNEYS THROUGH MOBILE, is truly that. My mind journey's to Bienville Square, the Saenger Theater, Toolen High School, The Cathedral, the variety of languages that greeted my ears as I walked with my grandmother down Dauphin Street, the Electric Maid Bakery, whose lemon puffs were to die for, and the Gene and Roy movies at the Century on Saturday mornings. I go back somewhat earlier than Mr. Hoffman in my personal memories. Streetcars, marching in endless parades down Government Street (Catholic schools loved parades), and the beautiful Christmas eve midnight mass conducted by Bishop Thomas J. Toolen. His history of the ferry to Fairhope brought back memories of my parents who "courted" on that ferry. Fairhope was also the site of several family vacations. Floundering in the bay, a one-time Jubilee occurrence, and playing around Battles Wharf are very fond memories. The mention of Grand Bay brought thoughts of cousins who lived there and summer visits complete with catching fireflys, wading in cold creeks and eating scuppernongs from the vine. Mr. Hoffman has accomplished what he set out to do - at least for this reader. For a few days, I can sit on my couch with his book and travel back to a long-ago time and place that I still call home. This is the first of Mr. Hoffman's books that I've read, but it certainly won't be the last. Mobile Revisted

It is impossible to grow up in Mobile, Alabama without this historic Southern city leaving its indelible mark. Even though I moved away 25 years ago, I still call Mobile home. Roy Hoffman's collection of articles about the people and places that make Mobile unique, brought back many memories and has stayed with me long after I turned the last page. The Mobile Register is indeed fortunate to have such a talented writer at its disposal.

Essential for learning to create speical effects

This is an essential book for any photographer who wants to learn to how to create stunning photographic artwork by manipulating photos. A wide variety of unusual and spectacular effects are presented. The beautiful examples have really inspired me.
First it covers manipulating, hand coloring, scanning and even recycling mistakes made with time-zero Polaroid film. Then black and white infrared photography using filters, metering and flash is covered along with film processing and printing. Bleaching and toning are next including great sections on copper split toning, posterization effects and creating pseudo flesh tones. Then emulsion transfers are shown including silverprint and liquid light. These create some great effects on non-traditional surfaces.
Image transfers and emulsion lifts follow. You are shown how to used a slide printer to make a print, make a projection print and transfer images onto non-paper surfaces like glass or silk, even getting two prints from one. Lastly, Polaroid instant slide films, solarization, photo transfers and hand coloring are discussed in detail.
All the instructions are excellent and thorough, covering everything from loading the camera to choosing and developing the film. There are a few demonstrations, lots of examples and great troubleshooting sections for each technique.
The appendixes in the back are very helpful. They include paper selection and characteristics, instructions on working with a copystand and a list of suppliers. This is a wonderful book to help the photographer with some darkroom experience move on to create awesome special effects photos.

Good and Bad Advice on a Variety of Creative Techniques.

In "Creative Photo Printmaking", author Theresa Airey attempts to cover 9 different photo and printmaking techniques that are alternative or supplementary to conventional practices, and which will expand any photographer's means of creative expression. I have found that books that discuss a variety of photographic skills, instead of being an exhaustive study of just one, tend to be cursory, serving as an introduction to their subjects more than in-depth guides. That's fine as long as they are solid, accurate introductions. "Creative Photo Printmaking" isn't one of the better multi-skill books that I've read. Some chapters are reasonably good, while others are, frankly, bad. Organized lists of necessary supplies and equipment are generally absent.

"Manipulating Polaroids" (Chapter 1) is a decent introduction to Polaroid "Time Zero" (SX-70) film. Advice on manipulating the film is adequate, and there are instructions for modifying modern 600 Series Polaroid cameras to accept SX-70 film. There is an interesting section about sandwiching SX-70 prints by removing the emulsion. The recommendation to duplicate and enlarge your prints by copying them to slide is outdated. Now you would simply scan them. Oddly, there is advice about printing slides onto Time Zero film with a conventional enlarger, but not with a DayLab, which is more common practice.

"Infrared Photos" (Chapter 2) is about black-and-white infrared film, which is prized for its ability to record increased tonal separation in the midtones while decreasing tonal separation in light and dark tones, creating a "luminescence" in light skin tones. This is the worst chapter in the book, as it is filled with misinformation. Infrared film does not record heat. Red filters do not allow more IR to pass through them; they block out the rest of the spectrum. Surface veins can be eliminated by increasing exposure. IR negatives should not be dense and difficult to print. The author has drastically overexposed her negatives, something that I would expect of a novice. The book advocates doing a lot of exposure tests to achieve correct exposure. If they didn't help the author, I don't think they'll help you. Set the ISO on your camera to 100. Set the exposure to 1/125 at f/11 on a sunny day. Use any yellow, orange, or light red filter. Pay no attention to filter factors; infrared light passes through the filter. Bracket your exposures by one stop over and under that exposure. Be sure to load and unload film in total darkness. You'll do fine. Ignore everything in this chapter. It's disgraceful.

"Bleaching and Toning" (Chapter 3) introduces several toning techniques. Toning with selenium then bleaching down the skin areas on portraits until a flesh tone is achieved produces a beautiful result on the demonstration print. Another technique is copper split-toning that literally produces a metallic copper effect that is quite striking, but is not explained in detail. There is also brief discussion of color posterization, which produces unreal colors.

"Working with Liquid Emulsions" (Chapter 4) explains the use of both Silverprint and Liquid Light, coating emulsions that are applied to various surfaces in order to make them susceptible to photographic printing. The instructions for coating, developing, bleaching, and troubleshooting Silverprint are quite detailed. Liquid Light requires longer exposures, and its instructions are not as detailed.

"Image Transfers and Emulsion Lifts" (Chapter 5) are two popular Polaroid techniques. Image Transfers are made from peel-apart Polaroid films when the negative is peeled from the substrate and applied to another surface. Instructions are given for paper selection, printing a slide onto the film with a DayLab, Vivitar slide printer, or an enlarger, separating the negative, making the transfer, reducing (bleaching) the print, and troubleshooting. Emulsion lifts remove the gelatin emulsion from the paper backing of a Polaroid print and transfer the emulsion, which is semi-translucent, to another surface. Step-by-step instructions are provided, as well as advice on transferring emulsions to glass, silk, and wood.

"Polaroid Instant Slide Films" (Chapter 6) is dedicated to films that are no longer available, but were when this book was written. Two types of instant slide film, Polapan and Polachrome, are described and examples of photos with various filter combinations are given. Polaroid instant slide films were discontinued because the law enforcement and scientific uses of the film have been usurped by digital, and the fine arts community was not enough to make these films profitable. I admire the films a great deal. If you ever have the opportunity to use them, I recommend the Polachrome for manmade, especially industrial, subjects and the Polapan for architecture or portraits. The author has used them in rural scenes, which show the films off poorly. But the way, Polachrome came in two varieties. The high contrast version was intended to photograph graphics and is less suitable to fine art.

"Solarization" (Chapter 7) discusses the reversal effect (light becomes dark, dark becomes light) that can be achieved by re-exposing a print when it is partially developed. Papers and developers are recommended, and the procedure is described. The author also gives advice on how to copy a solarized negative or slide onto film, but the films she mentions are no longer available.

"Photo Transfers" (Chapter 8) are photocopies of photographs that are transferred to the artists' paper of your choice. This chapter takes you through choosing a suitable print, copying it on a color laser copier, selecting an artists' paper, and making the transfer.

"Handcoloring Photographs" (Chapter 9) provides very little instruction on handcoloring. The author prefers coloring with pencils, which is unusual. Most handcolorists use photo oils in conjunction with pencils for details. This chapter describes a variety of products, but not what to do with them. The author does a lot of handcoloring on artists' papers, not photographic papers, and she discusses methods of dealing with the challenges of applying oils to them. If you are in this situation, her advice might help you. But the instructions for preparing photographic prints for coloring are inadequate and confusing.

This book is terrific for beginner or advanced photographers who love to transform their pix into something other than the straight shot. For slides, there are polaroid transfers; for prints, there are instructions on image transfers. There's information on handcoloring, printing on alternative surfaces, infrared,etc. In short, an excellent book with instructions on many topics.

The Muskogee Indians who lived along the lower Chattahoochee and Flint River watersheds had, and continue to have, a profound influence on the development of the southeastern United States, especially during the historic period (circa 1540–1836). Our knowledge of that culture is limited to what we can learn from their descendants and from archaeological and historical sources.   Combining historical documents and archaeological research on all known Lower Muskogee Creek sites, Thomas Foster has accurately pinpointed town locations discussed in the literature and reported in contemporary Creek oral histories. In so doing, this volume synthesizes the archaeological diversity and variation within the Lower Creek Indians between 1715 and 1836. The book is a study of archaeological methods because it analyzes the temporal and geographic variation within a single archaeological phase and the biases of that archaeological data. Foster's research segregates the variation between Lower Creek Indian towns through a regional and direct historic approach. Consequently, he is able to discern the unique differences between individual Creek Indian towns.    Foster argues that the study of Creek Indian history should be at the level of towns instead of archaeological phases and that there is significant continuity between the culture of the Historic Period Indians and the Prehistoric and Protohistoric peoples.    H.
