For me Understanding Shutter speed made it easy for me to finally get it. I have been using B.Petterson Exposure too and finally got off "Auto". I highly recommend this book...great examples written clearly and understandable.

What A Book Should Be!

If only more books were like this, illiteracy would vanish!
Instead of the same old stuff in the same dull way, this book covers some new information right off the bat, dispelling some common myths. It goes on to cover vital, pertinent information clearly, with illustrations (what else from a book on a photographic topic) that are remarkably well suited to the topics being discussed. Not only that, it is worth retaining as a reference in the unlikely event that some of the material needs a second time around.

With the discovery of type-II superconductivity by Abrikosov, the prediction of vortex lattices, and their experimental observation, quantized vortices have become a central object of study in superconductivity, superfluidity, and Bose--Einstein condensation. This book presents the mathematics of superconducting vortices in the framework of the acclaimed two-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau model, with or without magnetic field, and in the limit of a large Ginzburg-Landau parameter, kappa.

This text presents complete and mathematically rigorous versions of both results either already known by physicists or applied mathematicians, or entirely new. It begins by introducing mathematical tools such as the vortex balls construction and Jacobian estimates. Among the applications presented are: the determination of the vortex densities and vortex locations for energy minimizers in a wide range of regimes of applied fields, the precise expansion of the so-called first critical field in a bounded domain, the existence of branches of solutions with given numbers of vortices, and the derivation of a criticality condition for vortex densities of non-minimizing solutions. Thus, this book retraces in an almost entirely self-contained way many results that are scattered in series of articles, while containing a number of previously unpublished results as well.

The book also provides a list of open problems and a guide to the increasingly diverse mathematical literature on Ginzburg--Landau related topics. It will benefit both pure and applied mathematicians, physicists, and graduate students having either an introductory or an advanced knowledge of the subject.

This introduction to discrete mathematics is aimed primarily at undergraduates in mathematics and computer science at the freshmen and sophomore levels. The text has a distinctly applied orientation and begins with a survey of number systems and elementary set theory. Included are discussions of scientific notation and the representation of numbers in computers. An introduction to set theory includes mathematical induction, and leads into a discussion of Boolean algebras and circuits. Relations and functions are defined. An introduction to counting, including the Binomial Theorem, is used in studying the basics of probability theory. Graph study is discussed, including Euler and Hamilton cycles and trees. This is a vehicle for some easy proofs, as well as serving as another example of a data structure. Matrices and vectors are then defined. The book concludes with an introduction to cryptography, including the RSA cryptosystem, together with the necessary elementary number theory, such as the Euclidean algorithm. Good examples occur throughout, and most worked examples are followed by easy practice problems for which full solutions are provided. At the end of every section there is a problem set, with solutions to odd-numbered exercises. There is a full index. A math course at the college level is the required background for this text; college algebra would be the most helpful. However, students with greater mathematical preparation will benefit from some of the more challenging sections.

Networks have become nearly ubiquitous and increasingly complex, and their support of modern enterprise environments has become fundamental. Accordingly, robust network management techniques are essential to ensure optimal performance of these networks. This monograph treats the application of numerous graph-theoretic algorithms to a comprehensive analysis of dynamic enterprise networks. Network dynamics analysis yields valuable information about network performance, efficiency, fault prediction, cost optimization, indicators and warnings.

The exposition is organized into four relatively independent parts: an introduction and overview of typical enterprise networks and the graph theoretical prerequisites for all algorithms introduced later; an in-depth treatise of usage of various graph distances for event detection; a detailed exploration of properties of underlying graphs with modeling applications; and a theoretical and applied treatment of network behavior inferencing and forecasting using sequences of graphs.

Based on many years of applied research on generic network dynamics, this work covers a number of elegant applications (including many new and experimental results) of traditional graph theory algorithms and techniques to computationally tractable network dynamics analysis to motivate network analysts, practitioners and researchers alike. The material is also suitable for graduate courses addressing state-of-the-art applications of graph theory in analysis of dynamic communication networks, dynamic databasing, and knowledge management.

Interesting graph theory applications to network dynamics analysis

This book principally deals with the application of graph-theoretic algorithms (matching, similarity measures, graph change detection, clustering,...) to real-world networks. The focus of the book is on the graph-theoretic tools, i.e. adapting theoretical tools to get insight into the dynamics of networks.

In the first part, the authors review the state-of-the-art in network management and monitoring, and review the current work on anomaly detection. Some background on graph theory is also presented in the second chapter.

In the second and main part, the authors apply in each of the 6 chapters graph-theoretic tools and concepts on a particular problem. Emphasis is put on the computational cost of the techniques. Many interesting problems for detecting abnormal changes in graph dynamics are proposed based on edit distance and graph clustering.

In the third part, topological metrics are used to better understand the structure of enterprise networks. Tournament scoring is also proposed to rank the nodes by their importance in communications.

The fourth and last part deals with the problem of recovering missing information from graphs. Trying to recover missing information helps to reduce the risk of false alarms in abnormal change.

Professor Woyczyński is the author of 11 books and many papers in a wide range of international research journals.

This text serves as an excellent introduction to statistics for signal analysis. Be aware that it emphasizes theory over numerical methods - and that it is dense. If one is not looking for lengthy explanations but instead wants to get to the point quickly this book may be for them.

About the Author
Robert Leslie Smith is descended from loggers, hunters, fishermen, and entrepreneurs.  Now retired, he still lives near the swamp at the head of Mobile Bay, where the Mobile and Tensaw Rivers join.  He served as a Naval Officer in WW-II, and then returned to his teaching profession, nurturing students at Foley High School and finally moving up to Superintendent of Baldwin County, Alabama Schools.

Family Story

Well, Leslie Smith is a cousin of mine and this story is about our common grandfather and his father, my uncle, so I guess I am not without interest. And, he let me write a chapter for his book. But it is a good book and valid about a time gone by in the Mobile River Delta. If you are interested in how logging and life was in the first half of the 20th century in the swamp,you will like his book.

This book has a wealth of information about how our parents and grandparents lived in the 1930's and 1940's in the swamp. I bought the book for my brother who can remember going into the swamp with our Dad and our many uncles and cousins. He has thoroughly enjoyed the book.

The Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller operates the majority of modern control systems and has applications in many industries; thus any improvement in its design methodology has the potential to have a significant engineering and economic impact. Despite the existence of numerous methods for setting the parameters of PID controllers, the stability analysis of time-delay systems that use PID controllers remains extremely difficult, and there are very few existing results on PID controller synthesis.

Filling a gap in the literature, this book is a presentation of recent results in the field of PID controllers, including their design, analysis, and synthesis. The focus is on linear time-invariant plants, which may contain a time-delay in the feedback loop---a setting that captures many real-world practical and industrial situations. Emphasis is placed on the efficient computation of the entire set of PID controllers achieving stability and various performance specifications---both classical (gain and phase margin) and modern (H-infinity norms of closed-loop transfer functions)---enabling realistic design with several different criteria. Efficiency is important for the development of future software design packages, as well as further capabilities such as adaptive PID design and online implementation.

Once the home of aboriginal inhabitants, Alabama was claimed and occupied by European nations, later to become a permanent part of the United States. A cotton and slave state for more than half of the 19th century, Alabama declared its independence and joined another nation, the Confederate States of America, for its more than four-year history. The state assumed an uneasy and uncertain place in the 19th century’s last 35 years. Its role in the 20th century has been tumultuous but painfully predictable. This comprehensive history, written in the last decade of that century, presents, explains, and interprets the major events that occurred during Alabama’s history within the larger context of the South and the nation. Alabama: The History of a Deep South State is the first completely new comprehensive account of the state since A.B. Moore’s 1935 work. Divided into three main sections, the first concluding in 1865, the second in 1920, and the third bringing the story to the present, the book’s organization is both chronological and topical. General readers will welcome this modern history of Alabama, which examines such traditional subjects as politics, military events, economics, and broad social movements. Of equal value are sections devoted to race, Indians, women, and the environment, as well as detailed coverage of health, education, organized labor, civil rights, and the many cultural elements—from literature to sport—that have enriched Alabama’s history. The roles of individual leaders, from politicians to creative artists, are discussed. In 1934 Carl Carmer wrote that "Alabama felt a magic descending, spreading, long ago". That magic, whether long ago or in the recent past, continues to captivate and fascinate both citizens and observers from afar, and many historians have tried to capture its essence. Albert J. Pickett produced the first comprehensive history of the state in 1852, but no historian has matched his effort since A. B. Moore's 1934 work - at least not until now. Alabama: The History of a Deep South State is divided into three sections, the first concluding with the South's defeat in 1865, the second ending with the beginning of the Jazz Age in 1920, and the third bringing the story into 1993. In both chronological and topical organization, the book examines traditional subjects such as politics, military events, economics, and social movements. It discusses the roles of individual leaders, from politicians to creative artists. Both general readers and careful students of Alabama history will discover less well known people and issues treated in sections devoted to race, Indians, women, and the environment. Attention is given to health, education, organized labor, civil rights, and cultural elements - from literature to sports - that have affected the lives of Alabamians. There is strong emphasis upon the common people, those who have been rightly described as the "bone and sinew" of Alabama. Alabama: The History of a Deep South State not only describes the "magic" pointed out by Carmer but also addresses the challenge presented by Cason. About the Author

William Warren Rogers, a native of Greenville,  is a retired Professor of History at The Florida State University. The late Robert David Ward, born in Montevallo,  was Professor Emeritus of History at Georgia Southern University. Leah Rawls Atkins, a native of Birmingham, is Director Emerita of the Carol Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts and Humanities at Auburn University. Wayne Flynt, was born in Mississippi and grew up in Dothan and Anniston, is Distinguished University Professor Emeritus at Auburn University.

This book is so full of apologetic bias that I really started to dislike it. The authors look down their noses at so much that is associated with rural life. There is a lot of good history included, but it's oftentimes presented with a wink and a smirk. They make unsupported comment after unsupported comment with regards to the motivations and inner thoughts of people profiled in the book. They do a good job of fairly representing the issue of slavery and racial relations, so I give them credit for that. But almost quit reading it several times due to the urban superiority slant they put on so many of the pages.

I was born in Alabama and this book really helped me understand the histories of my ancestors. Very well written and very readable.

Understanding the Past Is Important for Changing the Future

It has been decades since my elementary and secondary education, and the details of Alabama's state history had nearly disappeared from conscious memory. Reading this book sparked faintly recalled facts, and created a new understanding of Alabama's complex historical legacy. As an adult there have been numerous times when I'd read a news story about our government at work in Montgomery that left me (SMH) shaking my head in disbelief. After reading this book which provides detailed historical context, it must confessed that I am less dismayed by what happens, but even more upset that we have allowed it to happen. If improvements require knowledge, then reading this book is a first step to acquiring the historical understanding needed to turn this state around and leave it as a place that others look toward as an example of positive transformation.
