About the Author
Contributors Rick Bowers is Professor of English at the University of Alberta, Canada. He has published many articles on Elizabethan literature and culture and is the author of Radical Comedy in Early Modern England (2008). Dorothy Chansky is the author of Composing Ourselves: The Little Theatre Movement and the American Audience (2004) and is currently working on a book about domestic labor and food in American theatre. She is Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance at Texas Tech University.
 Patty S. Derrick is a Professor of English at the University of PittsburghJohnstown, where she teaches Shakespeare and Renaissance Literature. She is a coeditor of the New Variorum edition of Two Gentlemen of Verona and is writing a book on Julia Marlowe's Shakespearean portrayals and interpretations.

Kelly Carolyn Gordon is the Coordinator of Theatre Studies at Brevard College. She earned a Ph.D. in theatre history, with a certificate in women's studies, from the University of Georgia and a master's degree in directing from Emerson College. She has also studied at Piven Theatre Workshop, La Mama's International Symposium for Directors in Umbria, Italy, and is a trained mediator. Her writing has appeared in Lighting Dimensions, The Encyclopedia of Modern Drama, and the Dallas Morning News. She is the granddaughter of actor Eddie Bracken. Jennifer A. Kokai is a lecturer at Texas State University. She received her Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin in December 2008. She is currently researching Aquarena Springs theme park, the United States' second underwater mermaid show and home of Ralphie the swimming pig. Elizabeth Osborne is an Assistant Professor in Theatre Studies at Florida State University. She has presented her research at IFTR, ASTR, ATHE, ALA, Theatre Symposium, and MATC. Her work appears in Theatre Symposium, Theatre History Studies, and the Journal of American Drama and Theatre.

Overview Historically, the concept of "ondelettes" or "wavelets" originated from the study of time-frequency signal analysis, wave propagation, and sampling theory. One of the main reasons for the discovery of wavelets and wavelet transforms is that the Fourier transform analysis does not contain the local information of signals. So the Fourier transform cannot be used for analyzing signals in a joint time and frequency domain. In 1982, Jean MorIet, in collaboration with a group of French engineers, first introduced the idea of wavelets as a family of functions constructed by using translation and dilation of a single function, called the mother wavelet, for the analysis of nonstationary signals. However, this new concept can be viewed as the synthesis of various ideas originating from different disciplines including mathematics (Calder6n-Zygmund operators and Littlewood-Paley theory), physics (coherent states in quantum mechanics and the renormalization group), and engineering (quadratic mirror filters, sideband coding in signal processing, and pyramidal algorithms in image processing). Wavelet analysis is an exciting new method for solving difficult problems in mathematics, physics, and engineering, with modern applications as diverse as wave propagation, data compression, image processing, pattern recognition, computer graphics, the detection of aircraft and submarines, and improvement in CAT scans and other medical image technology. Wavelets allow complex information such as music, speech, images, and patterns to be decomposed into elementary forms, called the fundamental building blocks, at different positions and scales and subsequently reconstructed with high precision.

In the research presented here, some of the community-level assumptions attributed to the appearance of Mississippian mounds are tested against the archaeological record of the Town Creek site - the remains of a town located on the northeastern edge of the Mississippian world. In particular, the archaeological record of Town Creek is used to test the idea that the appearance of Mississippian platform mounds was accompanied by the centralization of political authority in the hands of a powerful chief. political power within Mississippian societies. While platform mounds have been a part of Southeastern Native American communities since at least 100 B.C., around A.D. 400 leaders in some communities began to place their houses on top of earthen mounds - an act that has been interpreted as an attempt to legitimize personal authority by a community leader through the appropriation of a powerful, traditional, community-oriented symbol. building called an earthlodge - a structure with earth-embanked walls and an entrance indicated by short, parallel wall trenches. Earthlodges in the Southeast have been interpreted as places where a council of community leaders came together to make decisions based on consensus. In contrast to the more inclusive function proposed for premound earthlodges, it has been argued that access to the buildings on top of Mississippian platform mounds was limited to a much smaller subset of the community. If this was the case and if ground-level earthlodges were more accessible than mound-summit structures, then access to leaders and leadership may have decreased through time. architecture there follows the earthlodge-to-platform mound sequence that is well known across the South Appalachian subarea of the Mississippian world. The clear changes in public architecture coupled with the extensive exposure of the site's domestic sphere make Town Creek an excellent case study for examining the relationship among changes in public architecture and leadership within a Mississippian society.

Then Btichi's SIS can be thought of as a theory of programs which run forever (like operating systems or banking systems) and are deterministic. Formal mathematical proofs of its admis­ sibility appeared some several decades after its successful introduction in engineering calculations. Applied mathematics now has at its disposal many methods of approxi­ mate analysis of differential equations. Application of these methods could shorten and formalize the procedure of simplifying the equations and, thus, of constructing approximate motion models. Wide application of the methods into practice is hindered by the fol­ lowing. 1. Descriptions of various approximate methods are scattered over the mathematical literature. The researcher, as a rule, does not know what method is most suitable for a specific case. 2.

I grieve over the fact that I didn't have this knowledge when my own babies were new & squishy, since I was in such a sleep-deprived exhaustion that these "photo recipes" were what I needed Me Ra provides clear explanations and cuts right through technical confusion to open up a whole new world of photographing memories. She explains why it is she's doing what she's doing, which creates continual "a-ha" moments that make learning a new hobby so approachable. What sets this apart from any other book out there is the loving treatment of all those unique baby moments from someone who has obviously been there and cherished them: the fleeting hair swirl, baby feet, the love pats while feeding, inked-up baby feet at the hospital, .

Babyhood, much to my sorrow, is all too fleeting, and I only wish I'd had this book sooner so that I could have had this knowledge while my own were still in the newborn phase. Without question, I am giving this as my favorite New Baby Gift.

Where do I begin?

I guess I'll just add my 5-star review to the pile.

This book is so wonderful and helpful and came at the PERFECT time. I have one of those "fancy" cameras and not a lot of knowledge about it. I keep thinking I'll "learn one day" but keep it in its Auto mode 99% of the time. Well, at 39 weeks pregnant I decided that pictures of our first newborn were an absolute necessity but we couldn't afford to pay a photographer, so it was high time that I learn how to use that puppy!

In her introduction, Me Ra Koh explains that when she bought her first big-girl camera, she felt lost and people who were "in the know" talked above her head or in terms that seemed like a foreign language. Hello, kindred spirits, sister! I have more than one pal who takes photographs professionally - a couple who are freakishly good and make a great living at it. But when they talk about their photos, it's like they're speaking Japanese.

I grabbed a Cabbage Patch doll from my childhood and began experimenting with my camera the day I got this book. Little by little, chapter by chapter, Me Ra introduces you to quick tips and tricks to get great pictures - even in Auto mode. Then she gives you projects with "recipes" for a great photo - so I can take my camera out of Auto mode and set the aperture, ISO, and shutter speed for myself and get accustomed to what these settings change in each picture. I find myself taking more than one picture, changing settings with each one, and then comparing. I'm actually learning, and it's fun!

I'm 39 weeks and 4 days and baby has still not made his entrance into the world.. but I've got some great pictures of my Cabbage Patch doll! This is THE book for new parents and/or people who are nervous about photography. It's YOUR family and YOUR baby. Have fun!

Great for new parents!

This is a great book for any new parent out there--the helpful information about how to take a photograph, how to use your camera as well as capture the moment is great. As a new mommy and a photographer also, I was encouraged to see my baby with new eyes all over again! Thank you MeRa for the great book!

MeRa is fabulous throughout the book and in person--you won't be disappointed!

About the Author

Troy L. Best is Professor of Zoology and Curator of Mammals at Auburn University. He is coauthor, with Michael J. Harvey and J. Scott Altenbach, of Bats of the United States and Canada.

Julian L. Dusi was a P-38 high-altitude reconnaissance pilot in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. After 45 years of teaching, he retired from Auburn University as Professor of Zoology in 1993, continuing his interests in bird banding, bird counts, and scientific reading. He died in 2012 at the age of 92.

A Valuable Addition to the Gosse Nature Guides Series

As I leaf through my brand-new copy of this, the much-awaited and first published statewide treatment of Alabama's mammals to appear in 93 years, I see the authors have done a fine job of summarizing the basic facts (distribution, ecology, behavior, life history, conservation status, etc.) for each of 80 species, not all of which still occur in the state. Distribution maps and photographs are provided for each species, along with one feature that many users will find particularly valuable: dorsal, lateral, and ventral photographs of skulls. With this book's help, the next time you pick up a "mystery skull" you should be able to work it out to species. The book's size, along with its rugged yet soft cover make it quite portable, whether stowed in a vehicle or carried in a backpack.

It's a little large for a field guide, but I'll take it with me anyway. This is the best guide to mammals of Alabama produced so far. I can hardly wait on the next in the series of Gosse nature guides!
