Interest in the spin-c Dirac operator originally came about from the study of complex analytic manifolds, where in the non-Kähler case the Dolbeault operator is no longer suitable for getting local formulas for the Riemann–Roch number or the holomorphic Lefschetz number. However, every symplectic manifold (phase space in classical mechanics) also carries an almost complex structure and hence a corresponding spin-c Dirac operator. Using the heat kernels theory of Berline, Getzler, and Vergne, this work revisits some fundamental concepts of the theory, and presents the application to symplectic geometry.

J.J. Duistermaat was well known for his beautiful and concise expositions of seemingly familiar concepts, and this classic study is certainly no exception. About the Author

Hans Duistermaat was a geometric analyst, who unexpectedly passed away in March 2010. His research encompassed many different areas in mathematics: ordinary differential equations, classical mechanics, discrete integrable systems, Fourier integral operators and their application to partial differential equations and spectral problems, singularities of mappings, harmonic analysis on semisimple Lie groups, symplectic differential geometry, and algebraic geometry. He was (co-)author of eleven books.

Duistermaat was affiliated to the Mathematical Institute of Utrecht University since 1974 as a Professor of Pure and Applied Mathematics. During the last five years he was honored with a special professorship at Utrecht University endowed by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was also a member of the Academy since 1982. He had 23 PhD students.

Short but pretty good

This book, of great interest to both mathematicians and physicists, is a good overview of the analysis and topology of the spin-c Dirac operator and how it is connected with the Lefschetz fixed point formula. Readers familiar with algebraic topology will see the similarities between the case discussed in this book and the one there where the formula involves computing the alternating sum of cohomology groups of a mapping acting on a compact manifold. If the number computed by this sum is non-zero, the mapping has a fixed point.
After a brief overview of what is ahead in the book the author introduces the formalism behind the Dolbeault-Dirac operator. The object of interest is the Dolbeault complex and the existence of Hermitian structures on the tangent bundle and in fibers of holomorphic vector bundles over a given complex analytic manifold. The Dolbeault-Dirac operator is elliptic and has finite-dimensional kernel if the manifold is compact. The goal is to get explicit formulas for the Riemann-Roch number and its generalization, the holomorphic Lefschetz number. When the manifold is not Kahler, the author shows that it is more straightforward to calculate these numbers using the spin-c Dirac operator. This is because the Levi-Civita connection on the tangent bundle does not leave the almost complex structure invariant. The difference of the diagonal heat kernels converges as time approaches 0 from above, and the limit can be calculated. The price one pays for using the spin-c Dirac operator is that its kernel does not have holomorphic sections, and its square only preserves the degrees of the differential forms modulo two.
The main goal of chapter 3 is to introduce the Clifford bundle, with its main properties sketched by the author. Then after a discussion of the spin and spin-c groups, the spin-c Dirac operator is defined in Chapter 6. The author proves that the spin-c Dirac operator is self-adjoint, and its principal symbol equal to the principal symbol of the Dolbeault-Dirac operator.
The author then proves in chapter 6 that the square of the spin-c Dirac operator is equal to the Laplace operator with a zero order term involving curvature expressions. When a spin structure is present, it is also shown that the formulas for the square of the spin-c Dirac operator are equal. When the manifold is Kahler, the square satisfies the Bochner-Kodaira formula. This result can be used to prove the Kodaira vanishing theorem, and the author gives a reference for this.
Taking the square of the spin-c Dirac operator gives the heat diffusion operator, and the author shows how to get the formula for the index using heat kernel methods in the next chapter, and discusses the heat kernel expansion in the chapter after that. These results should be very familiar to physicists working in quantum field theory.
In chapter 9, it is assumed that the heat diffusion operator acts on sections of a vector bundle associated to a principal spin bundle. The "zeroth-order" term which is added to the Laplacian is characterized explicitly. The heat kernel expansion is give and then generalized in chapter 10 to the case where an automorphism acts on the manifold. The Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch integrand, which is the constant term in the expansion, is calculated in chapter 11, and then generalized to the case where an automorphism is present in chapter 12, via the local Lefschetz fixed point formula.
Finally, in chapter 13, the results are connected to the theory of characteristic classes, and then the (orbifold) spin-c Dirac operator and the corresponding heat kernel studied on orbifolds in chapter 14. The virtual character is computed via the heat kernel method and the Lefschetz formula is proven.
The next chapter is the most interesting in the book and discusses how one can apply these results over a symplectic manifold. The symplectic form has to satisfy an integrality condition that allows it to be a Chern form of a connection of a complex line bundle over the manifold. The author briefly reviews the theory of symplectic geometry, including Hamiltonian group actions and reduction and discusses geometric quantization. If the de Rham cohomology class of the symplectic form is integral, then one can put an almost complex structure on the symplectic manifold, and using the action of a compact and connected Lie group, one can obtain the necessary structures for the definition of the spin-c Dirac operator. The author gives an explicit example using toric varieties. If the almost complex structure is integrable, then the symplectic manifold can be viewed as a projective complex algebraic variety, and studied via algebraic geometry.

During the last ten years a powerful technique for the study of partial differential equations with regular singularities has developed using the theory of hyperfunctions. The technique has had several important applications in harmonic analysis for symmetric spaces.

This book gives an introductory exposition of the theory of hyperfunctions and regular singularities, and on this basis it treats two major applications to harmonic analysis. The first is to the proof of Helgason’s conjecture, due to Kashiwara et al., which represents eigenfunctions on Riemannian symmetric spaces as Poisson integrals of their hyperfunction boundary values.

A generalization of this result involving the full boundary of the space is also given. The second topic is the construction of discrete series for semisimple symmetric spaces, with an unpublished proof, due to Oshima, of a conjecture of Flensted-Jensen.

This is a great text, maybe one of the best ever written. Self-contained, non- intimidating, accessible.
His other book on Advanced Calculus is another masterpiece.

Advanced Calculus: A Differential Forms Approach

The differential forms approach has considerable intuitive appeal as well as capturing more useful math for the physics or engineering student than the conventional approach. Edwards is a little too much the mathematician. The text misses the mark for the typical physics or engineering student who has taken only the usual calculus sequence and needs a little more intuitive introduction and to be led into the abstraction more gently. A more geometric approach might have been useful. I would have introduced the wedge product explicitly with a geometric explanation in terms of vectors.

My objective in purchasing the book was to fill in my background on the subject the easy way after pretty much figuring out what it is all about. For that the book is fine. But back in 1959 when I took advanced calculus, I think I would have found the books difficult without a good teacher to help me along. The book is probably not what I'll use for a course.

A Fresh Look with Outdated Notation

The first three chapters of this book are worthy of separate publication. They could be read by any bright undergraduate with full comprehension, and they introduce in a marvelously clear way the unifying power of forms defined on an ambient Euclidean space using basic examples from physics (work and flow).

Throughout the author clearly demonstrates the need for mathematical rigor. Whenever he uses an informal example or argument, he will always conclude the section by analyzing why a rigorous argument is needed and often outlining how such an argument could be achieved. Later on in the book (in the sixth chapter) he will finally develop all the arguments rigorously in full depth.

After this third chapter, however, the book starts becoming less elegant and more tedious. Linear algebra is discussed--but without any of the modern notation! Vectors are a rare character here, and matrices are scantly used other than to define ideas. Instead, you will be bombarded with a hoard of individual variable names. Keeping track of exactly what's going on with all the variable names and summations becomes a task of mental endurance, not ingenuity or understanding. Some modern terminology is actually discussed, such as vector spaces and linear transformations, but not until the end of the chapter on linear algebra, effectively defeating the point. It is as if the material were tacked on just to make the book conform more to the standard content coverage.

Note that here you will not find a k-form defined as a member of the k-th exterior power of the cotangent bundle of a manifold. Rather than such an abstract definition, this book is far more down-to-earth and hence will allow readers who do not have serious mathematical training to grasp the power and beauty of forms. Depending on your previous familiarity with forms and on your mathematical background, this is a plus or a minus. For me, it was certainly a plus because until recently the abstract definition I provided above was meaningless garbage to me.

Overall, this is a book that would be best thumbed through at a book store so you can decide if it's worth your time and if the author's style meets your taste. It's a very well-written book with plenty of fresh insights and a novel approach. Mistakes are nearly impossible to find. The author has a powerful and humbling command of mathematics. Unfortunately, the notation was often too outdated for my taste and hindered not only my enjoyment of the book but also my ability to fully understand concepts that appear difficult here because of the onslaught of symbols but which are really rather straightforward in modern notation. But I suppose some people may prefer the different notation.

Another John Shaw Book - Excellent

This is another of John Shaw's excellent books on photography. Liberally illustrated with examples and interspersed with his commentary and notes I found tremendously useful.
Shaw covers almost all aspects of photography - from the rule of 16ths, exposure, film, tripods, lenses, closeups, depth of field, composition, backlit photography, etc... Reading this book before you start using that brand new SLR of yours will save you a lot of frustration and trial and error:) A lot of the tips in the book are also equally applicable to people using point-and-shoot cameras also.
A very useful feature in this book is that almost all photos have exposure details listed. Some of his other books do not have these details, which I miss.
This book is highly recommended if you are just beginning photography and are looking for a good introductory book.

Every aspiring nature photographer should consider this book a prerequisite to all others. I have used this book as the textbook for my nature photography seminars, and I have seen John Shaw's instructional style of writing put dozens of photographers on the right track. While this book is directed towards serious amateurs, there are enough technical concepts and real life field examples to make it a good review for seasoned photographers. Using the methods of a great teacher, Shaw begins at the beginning, taking the student, step by step, down the path of gaining complete control over the production of professional quality nature images.

School board meetings and other public exchanges highlighted the potent intersection of local and national social concerns: education, censorship, science, racism, and tensions in foundation values such as liberty, democracy, and free speech. For the authors of these essays, the exchanges that arose from “Barbiegate” illustrate vividly the role of rhetoric at the grassroots level, fundamental to civic judgment in a democratic state and at the core of “ordinary democracy.”

"This collection of scholarly essays by church historians focuses on the history of Christian denominations within the United States. Inspired to update William Warren Sweet's Religion on the American Frontier, published between 1931 and 1946, editor Keith Harper expands Sweet's original coverage of four denominations (Congregationalists, Presbyterians, Baptists, and Methodists) to include essays on Catholic and Mormon historiography and on Black Protestant, Pentecostal, and Evangelical religious movements. Each essay discusses recent research and publications and has extensive bibliographical notes. "The main contribution of this misleadingly titled volume is in updating historiography. In fact, 'American Denominational Families: Updating Their Historiography' would have been a more useful title. Denominational history has not been neglected to the degree that this book indicates. The updated items (mentioned in the text and endnotes) vividly illustrate this observation. The 'families' covered are Congregational, Presbyterian, Baptist, and Methodist. Catholics, black Protestants, Mormons, Pentecostals, and Evangelicals hardly represent denominations. In addition, Mormons are simply another world religion, emerging from Christianity just as Christianity emerged from Judaism. George Marsden's and Martin Marty's multiple works on Fundamentalists and Evangelicals are far more useful than these brief chapters. The numerous excellent local histories that deal with individual denominational churches are not even mentioned. Perhaps the most useful chapter is 'Black Protestantism,' though it includes a variety of denominations. The volume includes full notes, but unfortunately no index or central bibliography. In its present form, it is useful only to remind readers of the many works that have been written about some denominational families. Summing Up: Not recommended."

Interesting treatment of a selected group

This volume tries to update the monumental work of William Warren Sweet's Religion on the American Frontier published more than sixty years ago. It seems it is a compromise for those who wish for updated individual denominational histories over against publishers who realize there is limited interest in academia or American culture for books that are designed for specific audiences.
The editor is optimistic about the future of denominationalism in America and hopes this volume will lead to a synthesis "of religious authority as it relates to denominational structure and community," As such the volume provides a good source for "updating" as individual authors have chosen some specific feature in the past and present situation of Catholics, Presbyterians, Baptists, Methodists, Black Protestants, Mormons, and Pentecostals. In Baptist historiography Harper has left out the work of an important scholar Walter B. Shurden who has written extensively and who is widely recognized as an authority in the field in Baptist circles.

This reviewer wonders why the word "historiography" was not included in the title as the essays illuminate the trends of each group and how historians have treated them. As one who has taught and lived within the cocoon of denominational life for more than four decades, I am not as optimistic about the future of denominationalism. Sociological and demographic studies of American Christianity during the last decade indicate that denominations are declining in numbers and their structures are not meeting the demands of twenty-first century churchlife. A considerable number of "networks" are competing with denominations as pastors and laity in the churches attempt to reinterpret and renew what they believe is Missio Dei.

In addition, literature for Christian education available to the churches has left the boundaries of a monopolistic denominational publishing house. This is witnessed by the abundance of materials available on line and by the diminishing loyalty of Sunday school teachers who desire materials akin to 21st century modalities.

Added to the above, publications of in-depth studies like this book by university presses are slower and expensive to publish. It may take a book from one to two years to be published after its conception and writing. One wonders about their relevance or the importance beyond the academic community.
