Scholarly exploration of abduction

The author, a philosophy professor, engages in a thoughtful and detailed discussion of abduction, a form of reasoning that is different from deductive reasoning and inductive reasoning.

In an ambitious first chapter, the author: (1) explains what abductive reasoning is, and how it is often equated with inference to the best explanation; (2) distinguishes abductive reasoning from deductive reasoning and inductive reasoning; (3) shows how abductive reasoning is commonly used in scientific analysis, medicine, and legal reasoning about evidence; (4) compares abductive reasoning with other forms of probabilistic or plausible arguments; and (5) discusses how abduction can be viewed from the perspective of argumentation schemes.

In the second chapter, the author contends that abduction can be better understood and more effectively used if explanations are viewed as dialogues between two parties or agents. In this chapter, the author relies on eclectic examples from: (a) the history and philosophy of science; (b) expert systems in artificial intelligence; (c) the reasoning used in historical explanations and legal explanations; (d) explanations in conversations and teaching situations; (e) explanations by witnesses in court; (f) modern philosophy; (g) speech act theory; and (h) argumentation theory.

In the third chapter, the author relies heavily on ideas and concepts from artificial intelligence and legal reasoning to present a procedural model of rationality, which posits reasoning within a framework of dialogues that involve practical reasoning. The author notes some limitations of traditional deductive reasoning and inductive reasoning, and then contends that the existence of those limitations supports his position that explanation must be evaluated from a perspective of rationality that goes beyond considering only whether (a) arguments/explanations are true or false, or (b) consistent or inconsistent.

In the fourth chapter, the author contends that: (1) many arguments have the form of deductive modus ponens inferences, but are not deductively valid; (2) there is a need for a nondeductive, defeasible form of modus ponens inferences; and (3) abductive reasoning can help with the formulation of valid defeasible forms of modus ponens inferences. This chapter provides some preliminary analysis that presages the next chapter.

In the fifth chapter, the author contends that: (1) neither deductive reasoning nor inductive reasoning has been able to satisfactorily explain or adequately support causal reasoning; (2) abductive reasoning can be used to clarify and strengthen causal reasoning; and (3) causal reasoning is better understood as abductive in nature, not deductive or inductive in nature. In support of these contentions, the author uses examples from causal reasoning in the law, medicine, and science.

In the sixth chapter, the author discusses how abduction can be viewed as a form of inference to the best explanation conducted in the form of a dialogue that proceeds through four phases. The author also contends that the form of the inquiry or investigation (e.g., legal or medical) greatly affects what constitutes a better explanation.

In the seventh and final chapter, the author identifies some unsolved problems with abduction and suggests several ideas about how to address and work toward resolving those unsolved problems. The author does not claim to solve the identified problems, but contends his ideas suggest lines of reasoning and analysis that could help solve them.

The book is scholarly and technical in nature, and not written for casual reading. The book could be of interest to persons trained in, or studying, philosophy, formal or informal logic, the scientific method, medical diagnosis, or law. Anyone interested in learning how to better understand, analyze and evaluate arguments that use abductive reasoning or inference to the best explanation should read this book. Because of the technical nature of the author’s analysis, some prior knowledge about or exposure to philosophical analysis, logical reasoning, scientific reasoning, medical diagnosis, or legal reasoning would be helpful to the reader. Also, the author’s use of various examples from artificial intelligence to illustrate and elaborate on his contentions and arguments makes the book of possible interest to readers studying or working in the field of artificial intelligence.

While this is quite satisfactory and natural for scalar systems, the study of multi-input, multi-output linear time invariant control systems requires projective algebraic geometry. Thus, this second volume deals with multi-variable linear systems and pro jective algebraic geometry. The results are deeper and less transparent, but are also quite essential to an understanding of linear control theory. So you may know who proved the Fermat's Last Theorem! The author, if I remember correctly, wrote some sensational papers and books on the subject as well. He is a great mathematician. His style is clear and interesting. I like his works a lot. Well, maybe I am biased. Who is not?! Anyhow, this linear algebra book is a great text. Clear, concise, to the point, stimulating, very engaging! Moreover, it contains solutions to all the problems in the text--the only linear algebra text that offers complete solutions! Your professor probably won't use it as a text but you may want to have it since you can learn it yourself even you miss some points in class...

About the Author
Born in Cuba in 1952, Reina María Rodríguez is the author of more than thirty books of poetry and prose, including Las fotos de la Señora Loss, La detención del tiempo/Time’s Arrest (bilingual edition), Bosque negro, and Violet Island and Other Poems (bilingual anthology). She is a two-time winner of the prestigious Casa de las Américas prize for poetry, having also received multiple Julián del Casal and National Critics’ Awards. She was awarded the Italo Calvino award for her first novel. In 1999 Rodríguez was named a Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters in France. In 2013 she won Cuba’s National Literature Prize and in 2014 won the Pablo Neruda Ibero-American Poetry Award.

Kristin Dykstra translated Reina María Rodríguez’s La detención del tiempo/Time’s Arrest and co-translated Rodríguez’s Violet Island and Other Poems. She also translated two books by Omar Pérez, and her translations of complete poetry collections by Juan Carlos Flores and Angel Escobar are forthcoming from the University of Alabama Press. Dykstra was the recipient of the 2012 National Endowment for the Arts Literature Translation Fellowship.

"Anthropologist Beard-Mouse (Suffolk County Community College) does an extraordinary job examining the role tourism has played in the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI). She looks at how tourism has been a springboard for the economy of the tribe in western North Carolina, delving into the role tourism plays in the maintenance/revival of traditional arts/crafts, dance, storytelling, language, and other aspects of traditional culture. Of particular interest is her treatment of "chiefing," the domain of Cherokee men who dress in Plains regalia and pose for photos with tourists for a fee. The practice has been decried by Indian and non-Indian alike, but the author notes how it is used to draw in visitors for a good-humored lecture on how Cherokees really dressed, danced, and otherwise lived. In fact, 'chiefing' is regulated by the EBCI and is often used to direct visitors to the museum, living history village, outdoor drama, or artists' co-op, venues for the presentation of more authentic Cherokee culture. This volume is most reminiscent of Patsy West's The Enduring Seminoles: From Alligator-Wrestling to Casino Gaming (2008; 1st ed., CH, May'99, 36-5168). Summing Up: Highly recommended. Middleton, Shaw, Fortney and Lynch. If you haven't had the opportunity to attend a workshop that they are giving that should be a priority. If you can't fit it into your schedule or budget this book is the next best thing to working side by side with them. If you have had the opportunity, then American Vision will serve as an economical reinforcement of the lessons that they present in their workshops. The book is easy to read, and the photos...well they serve as a constant reminder that "anyone" can take good nature photographs.
