The mathematics discussed here is quite involved. Including tensor analysis, stress-strain relations and the non-linear Navier Stokes equation. Much of the work involves numerical analysis, as there are no analytic solutions to many problems.

You can treat the book as a standard, advanced text on the subject. But the added filip here is how it shows Mathematica can be used. Most general purpose texts on Mathematica involve simpler maths; high school or undergraduate level. Yet the program is quite powerful.

The book seems aimed at those scientists and engineers who are not primarily programmers. The idea is to let Mathematica offload much of the programming burden. The tradeoff might be that a loss of efficiency vis a vis custom code. But that might be acceptable to you.

Loop nest scheduling aims at ex ecutingstatementinstances linked bydata dependences;it is a compile-time activity. We are mostly interested in loop nestscheduling, butwe also deal with task graph scheduling for two main reasons: (i) Beautiful algorithms and heuristics have been reported in the literature recently; and (ii) Several graphscheduling, like list scheduling, are the basis techniques used in task ofthe loop transformations implemented in loop nest scheduling. As for loop nest scheduling our goal is to capture in a single place the fantastic developments of the last decade or so. Dozens of loop trans formations have been introduced (loop interchange, skewing, fusion, dis tribution, etc.) before a unifying theory emerged. The theory builds upon the pioneering papers of Karp, Miller, and Winograd [65] and of Lam port [75], and it relies on sophisticated mathematical tools (unimodular transformations, parametric integer linear programming, Hermite decom position, Smithdecomposition, etc.).

This book―unique in the literature―studies the application of neural networks to the analysis of time series of sea data, namely significant wave heights and sea levels. The particular problem examined as a starting point is the reconstruction of missing data, a general problem that appears in many cases of data analysis.

Advanced, Innovative and Difficult

This book is part of an advanced and innovative presentation of certain topics in system theory and control system design that are very rarely addressed elsewhere (I actually do not know of another source that addresses some of these issues). One might use this book to ask questions like "How do I select actuators/sensors so that transmission zeros are favorable to control design?". Those who have reached a level of knowledge and maturity in systems and control know that this is vital.

This book is not an introductory text into linear system theory. One might read this text alongside other "introductory" linear system theory books by C.T. Chen, Antsaklis and Michel, or Callier and Desoer, etc. This book is mathematically rigorous and there are many special definitions and symbols. The author makes an effort to extend the presentation to engineers with computer codes and numerical examples, which are helpful. Nonetheless, I still feel as though my head is about to explode when I read this book. It is difficult.

Mythographic collection

The editors of this collection assemble the tales by theme and mythographic element. This means that like tales are put with like, rather than separated by geography, tribe, or history. With such a large collection of small tales -- none being more than a page or two -- the editors seek to show how the various tribes of the southeast treat common themes.

What is missing is the fully formed narrative that we find in southwestern lore, but this represents a response to the historical disruption and European indifference, and an insistence on representing early tales. As it is, the tales are fragmentary and purely explanatory, with few containing character or the traditional agonistic structures. As such, this is a better record of the impressions of a mutating religious structure in a variety of tribes than it is a cultural legacy of story.

However, there is very little available that is dry-eyed, scholarly, and well documented, as this is, that can offer those elements, and therefore this is a good, if somewhat heavy handed in organization, collection.

In addition, various interesting physical phenomena derived from the asymptotic theory are explained. The background of the asymptotic studies is explained in Chapter 1, accord­ ing to which the fluid-dynamic-type equations that describe the behavior of a gas in the continuum limit are to be studied carefully. Their detailed studies depending on physical situations are treated in the following chapters. What is striking is that the classical gas dynamic system is incomplete to describe the behavior of a gas in the continuum limit (or in the limit that the mean free path of the gas molecules vanishes). Thanks to the asymptotic theory, problems for a slightly rarefied gas can be treated with the same ease as the corresponding classical fluid-dynamic problems. In a rarefied gas, a temperature field is di­ rectly related to a gas flow, and there are various interesting phenomena which cannot be found in a gas in the continuum limit.

Bureaucracy and Democracy Dichotomy

In this book, the public choice theorist V. Ostrom examines the intellectual crisis in American public administration that he believes has turned out following the political scandals such as Watergate.
The author dichotomizes the democratic administration and bureaucratic administration. Bureaucratic administration, originated with Weber and Wilson, is associated with a system of "good" administration that is hierarchically ordered in a system of graded ranks subject to political direction by heads of departments at the center of government (p. 24). The bureaucratic administration is assumed to produce efficient results and also makes the government responsible, as opposed to fragmented authority, in that it will be possible to show clearly who is the responsible when failures occurred. Democratic administration, according to Ostrom, is associated with fragmentation of authority and overlapping jurisdictions, and represents the opposite of bureaucratic administration based on unitary command of authority. To Ostrom, democratic administration, indulging fragmented authority and overlapping jurisdictions, is that what founding fathers of the United States deliberately envisioned. Ostrom believes that Wilsonian paradigm of bureaucratic administration has changed the nature of American public administration by leading to numerous reforms that aimed to strengthen the President and by overcoming "fragmented authority and overlapping jurisdictions" with the promise to "make the government more responsible and efficient in solving the problems of the society (i.e., war on poverty). Ostrom explains how the centralization of power in the Executive branch created unfortunate problems that have consumed the trust of citizens in government that divulges itself in the fact that half of the registered voters don't bother to voting any longer.
Ostrom attacks bureaucratic administration excellently in a way that I cannot counter-argue. However, I found his Simon interpretation irrelevant and distorted in that Ostrom shows Simon as if he was the first person who challenged bureaucratic administration-although students of Simon know very well Simon did not challenge bureaucratic administration but asserted that when principles (proverbs) of classical administrative theory contradict each other (for example, efficiency and unity of command principles) we are not given any guidelines for priority ranking, that is, Simon proposed a comprehensive administrative theory. However, it was nice to hear a different interpretation of Simon!
The point made by Ostrom is that centralization or concentration of power does not always produce "efficient" results, "efficiency" changes from one situation to another. Also, Ostrom attacks the false logic of bureaucratic administration, oriented toward efficiency, with the reason that it is interested only in "supply side" at the expense and ignorance of "demand side". The emphasis, he makes, is that each decision structure has advantages and disadvantages and when determining one of the decision structures we must calculate and weigh these advantages and disadvantages.
For Ostrom, concentrating of power in the hand of the Executive branch and dis-empowering the other branches beget what today we call "symbolic politics": "The Executive offices of the President would then become the `efficient' part of the government; the Congress, the courts, the statehouses, and the other centers of authority would become the `dignified' parts of government relieved of their other burdens of work so that they can devote themselves largely to the ceremonial functions of government" (p. 126). Ostrom reminds us the self-fulfilling prophecy of Rousseau "One who believes himself the master of others is nonetheless a greater slave than they" (p. 146).
In the final part of the book, Ostrom explains the guidelines (say theoretical framework) that will "help" us determine the appropriate decision structures under specific circumstances.
Overall, this book is great in its challenge to bureaucratic administration, however I don't believe that the alternative to bureaucratic administration is "public choice" under the name of democratic administration. Highly recommended classic.
