About the Author
George E. Lankford is Professor Emeritus at Lyon College where he served as endowed professor and chair of Social Sciences. He has authored numerous books and articles, including Looking for Lost Lore: Studies in Folklore, Ethnology, and Iconography.

Mythographic collection

The editors of this collection assemble the tales by theme and mythographic element. This means that like tales are put with like, rather than separated by geography, tribe, or history. With such a large collection of small tales -- none being more than a page or two -- the editors seek to show how the various tribes of the southeast treat common themes.
What is missing is the fully formed narrative that we find in southwestern lore, but this represents a response to the historical disruption and European indifference, and an insistence on representing early tales. As it is, the tales are fragmentary and purely explanatory, with few containing character or the traditional agonistic structures. As such, this is a better record of the impressions of a mutating religious structure in a variety of tribes than it is a cultural legacy of story.
However, there is very little available that is dry-eyed, scholarly, and well documented, as this is, that can offer those elements, and therefore this is a good, if somewhat heavy handed in organization, collection.
