This text is the first comprehensive treatment of structural decompositions of various types of linear systems, including autonomous, unforced or unsensed, strictly proper, non-strictly proper, and descriptor or singular systems. Structural properties play an important role in the understanding of linear systems and also provide insight to facilitate the solution of control problems related to stabilization, disturbance decoupling, robust and optimal control. Applications can be extended to industrial process control, aircraft and ship control, process automation control, and many other types of engineering systems.

Associate Professor Chen's research interests are in linear systems, robust control theory and control applications. He has published 7 monographs. Currently, he is serving as an Associate Editor of Systems and Control Letters, and Control and Intelligent Systems. Before returning to Singapore, Professor Chen worked in the US (New York and Washington State Universites) and in Australia. He lectures on several courses, both undergraduate and graduate.

Advanced, Innovative and Difficult

This book is part of an advanced and innovative presentation of certain topics in system theory and control system design that are very rarely addressed elsewhere (I actually do not know of another source that addresses some of these issues). One might use this book to ask questions like "How do I select actuators/sensors so that transmission zeros are favorable to control design?". Those who have reached a level of knowledge and maturity in systems and control know that this is vital.
This book is not an introductory text into linear system theory. One might read this text alongside other "introductory" linear system theory books by C.T. Chen, Antsaklis and Michel, or Callier and Desoer, etc. This book is mathematically rigorous and there are many special definitions and symbols. The author makes an effort to extend the presentation to engineers with computer codes and numerical examples, which are helpful. Nonetheless, I still feel as though my head is about to explode when I read this book. It is difficult.
