Pierre Grisvard, one of the most distinguished French mathematicians, died on April 22, 1994. A Conference was held in November 1994 out of which grew the invited articles contained in this volume. All of the papers are related to functional analysis applied to partial differential equations, which was Grisvard's specialty. Indeed his knowledge of this area was extremely broad. He began his career as one of the very first students of Jacques Louis Lions, and in 1965, he presented his "State Thesis" on interpolation spaces, using in particular, spectral theory for linear operators in Banach spaces. After 1970, he became a specialist in the study of optimal regularity for par tial differential equations with boundary conditions. He studied singulari ties coming from coefficients, boundary conditions, and mainly non-smooth domains, and left a legacy of precise results which have been published in journals and books. Pierre Grisvard spent most of his career as a full professor at the University of Nice, where he started in 1967. For shorter or longer periods, he visited several foreign countries, and collaborated with some of the most famous mathematicians in his field. He was also an excellent organizer and directed a large number of Ph.D. students. Finally, this volume contains a bibliography of Grisvard's works as well as one paper which he wrote and which has not been published before.

William Lendrum "Billy" Mitchell (December 28, 1879 – February 19, 1936) was an American Army general who is regarded as the father of the U.S. Air Force, and is one of the most famous and most controversial figures in the history of American airpower.

Mitchell served in France during the First World War and, by the conflict's end, commanded all American air combat units in that country. After the war, he was appointed deputy director of the Air Service and began to advocate increased investment in air power, claiming this would prove vital in future wars. He particularly stressed the ability of bombers to sink battleships and organized a series of dramatic bombing runs against stationary ships designed to test the idea that attracted wide notice from the public.

He antagonized many in both the Army and Navy with his arguments and criticism and, in 1925, was demoted to Colonel. Later that year, he was court-martialed for insubordination after accusing military chiefs of an "almost treasonable administration of the national defense." He resigned from the service shortly thereafter.

Mitchell received many honors following his death, including a commission by the President as a Major General. He is also the only individual after whom a type of American military aircraft is named: the B-25 "Mitchell."

Robert S. Ehlers Jr. is a colonel in the United States Air Force. He is currently serving as a professor of airpower history at the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies, Maxwell AFB, Alabama. Colonel Ehlers has also served in command positions at the squadron and group levels.

The new edition of "Their Blood Runs Cold" aptly serves its original purpose (of 30 years ago) of providing general knowledge about reptiles and amphibians that is suitable for public consumption, but has additional updates on the state of herpetology today. The stories are timeless, often humorous, and the herpetological facts are accurate. Any young person interested in herpetology as a career must read this book, and most adults would find it entertaining and informative

The selective use of common rock graphic design and physical elements can be seen in the distribution and execution of the carved and painted images. Pecked, ground, abraded, and scratched petroglyphs, along with pictographs done frequently in red, black, white and orange hues are found on a range of rock surfaces including limestones, granites, diorites, and andesites. Caves/rock shelters and rock formations associated with water sources (water ways, pools, ocean) account for the two most common locations, followed by ball court sites, inland rock outcroppings and beach rock. In addition to specific area presentations, the work includes a review of recent advances in Caribbean rock graphic studies including dating and interpretative models; the application of a new documentation method and resulting computer manipulation advantages; a conservation project in Jamaica that has implications for the preservation and interpretation of the site; and a proposed dating sequence for the Lesser AntilleanWindward Islands.

Well-known dynamic programming arguments show there is a direct relationship between the solution of a control problem and the solution of a corresponding Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman (HJB) partial differential equation (PDE). The max-plus-based methods examined in this monograph belong to an entirely new class of numerical methods for the solution of nonlinear control problems and their associated HJB PDEs; they are not equivalent to either of the more commonly used finite element or characteristic approaches. The potential advantages of the max-plus-based approaches lie in the fact that solution operators for nonlinear HJB problems are linear over the max-plus algebra, and this linearity is exploited in the construction of algorithms.

The book will be of interest to applied mathematicians, engineers, and graduate students interested in the control of nonlinear systems through the implementation of recently developed numerical methods. Researchers and practitioners tangentially interested in this area will also find a readable, concise discussion of the subject through a careful selection of specific chapters and sections. Basic knowledge of control theory for systems with dynamics governed by differential equations is required.

This is a hard book to read, partially due to a rigorous treatment and difficult notation and organization. Nevertheless, it represents the unified publication of several important papers by the author, breaking a new ground in control theory. The curse of dimensionality free method especially holds a great promise to develop further and to be applicable to niche area of high dimensional systems, which are currently almost impossible to solve. For speedy read, do see the chapter dependencies and narrow down to the interested chapter using the shortest path.

The aim of this book is to present the fundamental concepts and properties of the geodesic flow of a closed Riemannian manifold. The topics covered are close to my research interests. An important goal here is to describe properties of the geodesic flow which do not require curvature assumptions. A typical example of such a property and a central result in this work is Mane's formula that relates the topological entropy of the geodesic flow with the exponential growth rate of the average numbers of geodesic arcs between two points in the manifold. The material here can be reasonably covered in a one-semester course. I have in mind an audience with prior exposure to the fundamentals of Riemannian geometry and dynamical systems. I am very grateful for the assistance and criticism of several people in preparing the text. In particular, I wish to thank Leonardo Macarini and Nelson Moller who helped me with the writing of the first two chapters and the figures. Gonzalo Tomaria caught several errors and contributed with helpful suggestions. Pablo Spallanzani wrote solutions to several of the exercises. I have used his solutions to write many of the hints and answers. "The main goal of the book is to present, in a self-contained way, results of the author and of Ricardo Mane about various ways to calculate or estimate the topological entropy of the geodesic flow on a closed Riemannian manifold M. The book begins with two introductory chapters on general properties of geodesic flows including a discussion of some of its properties as a Hamiltonian system acting on the tangent bundle TM of M. The third and fourth chapters present a formula for the topological entropy of the geodesic flow in terms of asymptotic growth of the average number of geodesic arcs in M connecting two given points. This, and similar other formulas for the topological entropy are obtained as an application of a fundamental result of Y. Yomdin which is also discussed, however without proof. The last chapter contains results, mainly due to the author, on topological conditions for M which guarantee that the topological entropy of the geodesic flow for every metric on M is positive. It is also shown that there are manifolds which satisfy these conditions, but for which the infimum of the entropies for metrics with normalized volume vanishes. The text is accompanied by many exercises. Many of the easier details of the material are presented in this form…"

He pointed out further that establishing direct mathematical connections between these two forms of a single theory was a "big and important problem. " On the one hand, the theory of vertex operator algebras and their repre sentations unifies (and considerably extends) the representation theories of the Heisenberg, Virasoro and Kac-Moody algebras and their superextensions.

Unlike "Challenges," however, "Treasures" begins with elementary facts, followed by a number of carefully selected problems and an extensive discussion of their solutions. This discussion then leads to more complicated and more intellectually challenging problems, as well as their solutions. Throughout the book students are encouraged to express their ideas, conjectures, and conclusions in writing. The goal is to help readers develop a host of new mathematical tools and strategies that will be useful beyond the classroom and in a number of disciplines.

"Mathematical Olympiad Treasures" reflects the depth of experience of two seasoned professors and coaches from the United States and Romanian Olympiad teams.

Helpful for the experience, but not beginners

I would recommend this book if you have already developed a repretoire for solving olympiad (USAMO, IMO, etc) level problems. This book teaches a couple more interesting startegies to add to your olympiad bag of tricks. However, a beginner to olympiad problems may wish to consider a different book first.

I bought this book this year before my first USAMO. I wanted to acquaint myself with important problem solving techniques I would need for this test. Whiel this book provided many important insights and tricks, It was not helpful for my purposes. Basically, it gave plenty of extra tricks, but very, very little on where to apply these tricks and how a student would know to use a given technique.

In all, I'd rate this book a 5 for advanced problem solvers who know what they are doing but want a good set of problems and extra techniques. However, a newcomer to olympiads may wish to consider a different book to start educating themselves in problem-solving

Definitely a treasure!

Andreescu delivered again! This book teaches powerful math problem solving techniques through a series of graded problems. The insight from these two renounced problem solvers of elementary problems at the olympiad level is prevalent throughout the book, which is what makes this book a treasure. You'll learn wonderful techniques and come away with a satisfying feeling after you can solve some of the problems that seem impossible to you before. I hope these authors continue to put out such gems in the near future. Enjoy!

A good pedagogical aid for math competition

This is a great compilation of various subjects in math from which quiz problems often stem. The thought process for solving a particular type of quizzes is illustrated with actual sample problems, as it should be. I think it will be perfect for my son when he gets a little older, but this book may be too easy for adults. I purchased it after enjoying months of puzzle-solving pleasure on my long daily train rides with "Mathematical Olympiad Challenges" from the same authors, but this book poses so little challenge that there is virtually no risk of stumbling over any problem. The authors acknowledge the difference in difficulty levels in the promotional literature. Perhaps they will publish a collection of harder problems separately.
