The approach followed is very interesting and is well-suited to either teaching undergraduate students or complementing first-year graduate students. In fifteen chapters, topics like orbital mechanics, including some perturbations and details about the restricted three-body problem, rocket propulsion, atmospheric and transatmospheric trajectories, attitude and control are considered in a clear presentation. This condensed book even has some introductory explanations of kinematics and nice details about modeling the planetary atmosphere or the Earth's gravitational field, which makes it self-contained.

The approach followed in each chapter is useful and direct with a list of objectives, many worked examples, exercises and a final summary. Another interesting fact is that the book contains the implementation of the computations, in the way suggested by the author, using MATLAB code. Atmospheric and Space Flight Dynamics by Ashish Tewari

Author Ashish Tewari provides an excellent introduction to applications of MATLAB and Simulink to aerospace problems. In the process of providing these illustrative cases, Atmospheric and Spaceflight Dynamics provides a comprehensive treatment of both fundamental and modern flight mechanics formulations. These derivations, of course, have frequently been published in other texts, and in some cases they are accompanied by FORTRAN or C code, but Tewari's approach with MATLAB is a needed contribution. Moreover, the publishers have helped make this an accessible book with reasonable pricing. I'd say that the backcover description of the book's contents are essentially true.

In his own introduction to the book Ashish Tewari explains his intent to provide "a unified approach to aircraft and spacecraft flight..." which is something that certainly grabs my attention. Like many people in industry I am very interested in reusable winged vehicles with perhaps both jet engines and rockets. These are vehicles which would certainly need that unified approach and, to interject, I would love to communicate more with the author about such ideas.

Although I did say that there are similar introductions to flight mechanics available for students and others, I should add that the illustrative examples given in Tewari's book are quite distinctive and remarkable in themselves. Some might be familiar or basic, but many take on new problems to the textbook reader that one realizes are lurking out there in the field of aircraft or spacecraft development somewhere.

Ashish Tewari also wrote a related textbook "Modern Control Design with MATLAB and Simulink", also with aerospace illustrative examples. This book is helpful as well and I think the two together could be treated as Volume I and Volume II. Though when Tewari introduced the subject of a vectoring a rocket through the atmosphere as its mass and inertia vary along with its aerodynamic loads... I think he has set himself up for writing Volume III.

Every tool you'll need to start simulating

I purchased this book as a reference for my aerospace engineering senior design project, in which I functioned as the dyanmics and control analyst. This book proved to be invaluable in every aspect of my responsibilities, particularly and most importantly in actual simulation of the equations of motion. The specific MATLAB codes provided are an excellent reference for writing your own scripts and functions for the numerical integration, and auxillary functions like the atmosphere and gravity programs were huge time-savers. If unfamiliar with the material, his step-by-step approach to the end goal of simulating a wide variety of atmospheric, transatmospheric, and spaceflight/orbital problems in both aero- and astronautical vehicles is perfectly structured. You will gain valuable insight into common dynamic modeling assumptions, both in 3 and 6 degree of freedom problems. I could not have asked for a better text.

The only possible suggestion for improvement I have is a greater number of even more in-depth, modern-type problems, like a recurring Space Shuttle example; this would cover a vertical-take off rocket with unique strcuture, aerodynamics, and staging into orbit, rendezvous with an orbiting station, lifting body reentry, and glide-to-target landing. Other possibilities include atmospheric simulations of hypersonic vehicles with ramjet/scramjet type propulsion. Still, these are just small suggestions in the face of what is an overall excellent publication; I would certainly buy future works from this author, particularly those with similar topics and examples as brought up above.

Group Theoretical Methods and Their Applications

I found Fassler and Stiefel indispensable in the study of dynamical systems that undergo bifurcations in the presence of symmetry. They make the types of potential applications plain to the mathematician and make the group theory quite readable to the physicist. In addition they describe algorithms for generating symmetry-adapted basis functions in enough detail to allow one to implement them in practice.

About the Author
Austin Sarat is the William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Jurisprudence and Political Science at Amherst College and Justice Hugo L. Black Visiting Senior Faculty Scholar at The University of Alabama School of Law. He is the author or editor of over seventy books on law and society, and he is the editor of the journals Law, Culture, and Humanities and Studies in Law, Politics, and Society. He also edits the book series Cultural Lives of Law at Stanford University Press. Contributors:  Montré D. Carodine earned her J.D. from Tulane, where she was a member of the Tulane Law Review. She served as a law clerk to the Honorable Carl E. Stewart, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and then practiced with Fulbright & Jaworski in Houston, Texas. She began teaching at Washington and Lee and later joined The University of Alabama law faculty where she is an associate professor of law. She teaches Evidence, Race and the Law, Civil Procedure, and International Litigation. Her recent publications have appeared in the Maryland Law Review, the Indiana Law Journal, and the William & Mary Law Review.  Alan L. Durham received his law degree from the University of California at Berkley, and has served in private practice in Palo Alto, California, with the law firms of Brown & Bain and Morrison and Foerster, emphasizing high-technology intellectual property litigation, especially relating to patents and trade secrets. He is the author of Patent Law Essentials: A Concise Guide. As a professor of law, he now teaches intellectual property and torts at The University of Alabama.      Grace Soyon Lee is an assistant professor at The University of Alabama School of Law, where she teaches Contracts, Business Planning, and Secured Transactions. She received her B.A. from Williams College and her J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law. Prior to joining The University of Alabama faculty, Lee clerked for the Honorable Richard Enslen of the Western District of Michigan and worked in the tax departments of Mayer Brown LLP and Latham & Watkins LLP.     Desmond Manderson holds the Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Law and Discourse at the Faculty of Law, McGill University, and is foundation director of the Institute for the Public Life of Arts and Ideas, which promotes innovative interdisciplinary research and teaching right across the humanities. His interdisciplinary work has led to essays and lectures around the world in the fields of literature, philosophy, ethics, history, cultural studies, music, art, and anthropology, as well as in law and legal theory, and his books include From Mr. Sin to Mr. Big; Songs Without Music: Aesthetic Dimensions of Law and Justice; and Proximity, Levinas, and the Soul of Law.     Anna McCarthy is associate professor of cinema studies at New York University, where she teaches courses on film and television history, Marxist cultural theory, historiography, and media theory. She is coeditor of the journal Social Text; her books include Ambient Television, The Citizen Machine, and the coedited anthology Media Space. She has held fellowships at a number of institutions, including the Smithsonian and the Annenberg School for Communication. In 2011, she will be a fellow at the International Center for Cultural Technology and Media Philosophy at the Bauhaus University, Weimar. She earned her Ph.D. from Northwestern University.     Naomi Mezey received a master's degree in American Studies from the University of Minnesota and a J.D. from Stanford Law School, where she served as an articles editor for the Stanford Law Review. She has worked as a law clerk for Judge Marilyn Hall Patel of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, and as a legislative aide to former senator Alan Cranston. She is a professor of law at Georgetown University Law Center, with a focus in the fields of legislation, civil procedure, jurisprudence, and law and culture.     Laurie Oullette received her Ph.D. in communication at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and now works as an associate professor of communication studies at the University of Minnesota, where she teaches courses such as Reality TV: History, Culture and Economics; Critical Television Studies; Media and Consumer Culture; and Media Historiography. She is coauthor of Better Living through Reality TV: Television and Post-Welfare Citizenship, coeditor of Reality TV: Remaking Television Culture, and author of Viewers Like You? How Public TV Failed the People.     Michael S. Pardo, associate professor of law at The University of Alabama, writes and teaches in the areas of evidence, criminal procedure, civil procedure, and jurisprudence. He has authored numerous publications in law reviews (including the Texas, Illinois, Boston College, Iowa, and Northwestern Law Reviews, among others) and peer-reviewed journals (including Legal Theory, Law & Philosophy and the Journal of Legal Studies, among others). He is currently the chair-elect of the American Association of Law Schools Section on Evidence. He received his J.D. from Northwestern University.     David E. Patton serves as the director of the Criminal Defense Clinic and as an assistant professor of law at The University of Alabama. Prior to joining the faculty, he spent six years working as a trial attorney in the Federal Defender office in the Southern District of New York while also teaching the Federal Defender Clinic at New York University School of Law. He earned his J.D. from the University of Virginia.
Richard K. Sherwin is a professor of law and director of the Visual Persuasion Project at New York Law School. He is the author of When Law Goes Pop: The Vanishing Line between Law and Popular Culture and Visualizing Law in the Age of the Digital Baroque both of which explore the impact of visual communication technologies on the theory and practice of law. A frequent commentator on the relationship between law, culture, film, and digital media, Professor Sherwin's media appearances include NBC's Today Show, PBS, CNN, MSNBC, and American, Irish, and Australian National Public Radio.

Fabulous

This book, on a pretty austere but exceedingly important subject (particulalry given the power and impact of the Riemann-Hilbert Correspondence) is a wonderful resource --- in fact, the book gives a full proof of "Riemann-Hilbert"!Additionally, the authors discuss a beautiful and deep connection to representation theory, which is not present in other texts. This makes the book particularly useful to people seeking to apply this material to other areas.
Finally, the book is very well written and accessible, provided of course that the reader has the required background (Recommendation: first study Kashiwara-Shapira's "Sheaves on Manifolds.").

~his Monograph has two objectives : to analyze a f inite e l e m en t m e th o d useful for solving a large class of t hi n shell prob l e ms, and to show in practice how to use this method to simulate an arch dam prob lem. The first objective is developed in Part I. We record the defi- tion of a general thin shell model corresponding to the W.T. KOlTER linear equations and we show the existence and the uniqueness for a solution. By using a co nform ing fi nite e l e m ent me t hod , we associate a family of discrete problems to the continuous problem ; prove the convergence of the method ; and obtain error estimates between exact and approximate solutions. We then describe the impl em enta t ion of some specific conforming methods. The second objective is developed in Part 2. It consists of applying these finite element methods in the case of a representative practical situation that is an arc h dam pro b le m. This kind of problem is still of great interest, since hydroelectric plants permit the rapid increase of electricity production during the day hours of heavy consumption. This regulation requires construction of new hydroelectric plants on suitable sites, as well as permanent control of existing dams that may be enlightened by numerical stress analysis .
