About the Author
Richard P. Hallion retired as Senior Advisor for Air and Space Issues, Directorate for Security, Counterintelligence and Special Programs Oversight at the Pentagon. Among other works he is also the author of The Naval Air War in Korea, Rise of the Fighter Aircraft, 1914-1918, and Legacy of Flight: The Guggenheim Contribution to American Aviation. Air Vice-Marshal R. A. Mason, RAF, CBE, was air secretary and director general of Personnel Management for the Royal Air Force Ministry of Defence and coauthor of Air Power in the Nuclear Age and The Soviet Air Forces.

The Development of Tactical Air Power Examined.

I found "Strike From the Sky" and interesting study of tactical air power in the period from the introduction of military aviation through to the end of WWII. The subject is not nearly so well covered as strategic airpower, even though its impact is more self evident. I found the discussion of the use of tactical aviation during the interwar years particularly interesting because the topic is rarely discussed in popular histories. The book took a dry academic approach, which was suitable for the author's purpose, but I find the experiences of people caught up in conflict as least as important as the tactical impact of technology, so, from that perspective the work as lacking. Still, I found it enlightening.
