Song of the Tides, by Tom Joseph

Beginning with their battle against the forces of Ponce de Leon, the Calusa Indians of southwest Florida entered a dark period of European invasion and native resistance, which changed the nature and course of life on the North American continent. Song of the Tides is a work of anthropological fiction that is set during the period of the Spanish entrada into southwest Florida and their encounters with the Calusa. Relying on letters and memoirs, especially those of explorer Pedro Menendez de Aviles, shipwrecked captive Escalante Fontaneda, and the Jesuit priest Juan Rogel, Joseph has woven a tale of vivid historical detail and compelling human drama. Working with Calusa scholars, the author has created a superbly written account of the clash of two proud and dominant cultures. Told through the voice of Aesha, daughter of the great Calusa chief Caalus, as well as those of other political and spiritual leaders, the fictional narrative spans half a century of conflict with Spanish soldiers and Jesuits, infighting between bands, struggle to preserve their culture, and eventual defeat of the Spanish through wit and deceit.

Review
“A very well–written, moving captivating tale that is based substantially on the existing documentation about 16th–century Spanish contact with the Calusa Indians and incorporates a broad range of information from both ethnohistorical and archaeological sources to create a narrative that, although fictional, provides the reader with a substantially factual understanding of the Calusa and their world. I found myself drawn into the characters.”—John E. Worth, author of Struggle for the Georgia Coast  and The Timucua Chiefdoms of Spanish Florida

So I absolutely loved this fictionalized story of actual events
By LostWorlds
Very enjoyable story about real life events and real life people. I have a strong interest in this time period and the cultural clash between the original Spanish and indigenous inhabitants of the southeastern U.S. So I absolutely loved this fictionalized story of actual events. But I think even someone who knows little of these events or time period could thoroughly enjoy this story. It's really a tale of political intrigue- it seems all the main characters are constantly scheming to gain power or control through either brute force, deceit or wit. From the indigenous leaders to the indigenous shaman to the indigenous warriors to the Spanish soldiers to the catholic friars to the Spanish captains....it is a story of shifting allegiances and competing motives. It would've been so easy to write a cliched story of "poor Indians" versus "savage Europeans" but the author weaves a much more complex story where everyone is jockeying for power, at all levels, and it's never clear who's going to prevail. It's as much a story about human nature as it is a story about real historical events. And it's a lot of fun to read. Only took a few evenings of reading before bedtime to finish the story.

Highly recommended!

This was a great read. Very descriptive and well researched. I often reread passages in order to savor the beautiful language used by the author. I enjoyed matching up the old place names with the current place names. Also, I am a birder and had fun identifying the birds in the book by their descriptions. I found especially interesting the way the author juxtabposed the Caalus religion and Christianity. The dramatic ending really conveys the anguish and loss of another native civilization decimated by European imperialism. Highly recommended!

Tom Joseph's Song of the Tides' Review
By Joey
True enough. Tom Joseph's first published novel is a hummer of a summer read, but this popular notion that a book should be read on an inflatable raft while sipping a drink through a long straw is limiting. Song of the Tides is sure to be enjoyed in every season for many years. By composing a symphony of violent adventure; absorbing characters like Aesha, the magnetic protagonist; her perilous romance; the lure of myth; and a largely unknown part of Florida history, Joseph emerges as a superb prose stylist. The froth of Conflict between the Calusa Indians, the conquistadors and the Jesuit missionaries blends with gentle descriptions of land and seascapes. As Mozart said, "A compositon must have no extra notes."Joseph uses no extra words. It is a work of bold energy and tender understandings. Best of all, the "Song" is story, one so affecting, you'll want to read it again and again. Listen for its spell-binding notes. Don't wait for summer.
