Best new book on wavelets!

Reader's review of "Wavelets Through A Looking Glass--The World of the
Spectrum", by O. Bratteli and P. Jorgensen
This book does a superlative job of demonstrating the richness of the
theory of wavelets, which began as an outgrowth of classical harmonic
analysis. The authors have demonstrated further connections with spectral
theory, ergodic theory, homotopy theory and the theory of
probability---just to name a few of the well-established areas of
mathematics which are shown to touch the theory of wavelets. At the same
time the material is beautifully documented by means of 61 figures,
numerous tables and other illustrations which are freely distributed
throughout the book. An exhaustive list of 200 references to the most
current literature ensures scholarly care and the most up-to-date account
of the topics covered.
The authors succeed admirably in achieving the two-fold purpose of the
book. On the one hand the goal is to give a modern (but "timeless")
presentation of wavelet theory while on the other hand the goal is to
present new results that have not previously been published. The latter
include material on homotopy of resolutions, approximation theory and
results on the spectrum of the associated transfer operators and
subdivision operators. The first goal is well-served by the many
well-documented exercises which appear at the end of each chapter. The
pedagogy is further enhanced by several paragraphs of illuminating prose
at the beginning of each chapter--to set the stage for the technical
material to follow. Although not written as a conventional text, one would
expect that an industrious graduate student could profit enormously from a
serious exposure to this book.
With respect to the literature on wavelets, it is difficult to recall any
other book that is so well documented both with graphical and numerical
details as well as mathematical proof. This volume will remain a central
reference work for many years to come.

A fresh look at wavelets

The Book by Bratteli and Jorgensen is a superb book on wavelet's theory. It is very well written and has new and a fresh point of view on the subject. Although there are several good books on wavelets, the book by Bratteli and Jorgensen covers an important niche that has not been covered before. In particular
1- The book covers the theory of wavelets from the point of view of operators and functional analysis and will appeal to a growing number of pure as well as applied mathematicians interested in the subject.
2- The writing of the book is very appealing: every chapter starts by a tutorial that gives motivation as well as intuition. It is then followed by a very clean mathematical development of the subject, together with many examples, figures, and applications from physics and engineering. A set of nice problems is provided at the end of each chapter. Thus this book can be used as a graduate textbook or for mathematical seminars in mathematics departments.
3- This book can even be used by experts in wavelet theory for learning about recent developments and new perspectives from operator theory and functional analysis.
I highly recommend this book.

A masterpiece in wavelets

This is a very well written book on the theory of wavelets and its applications. The presentation is self-contained and may serve as an introduction for someone who wants to learn about this topic. It also is an excellent book for those who have an advanced graduate degree in applied mathematics since it demonstrates how to truly understand complex concepts. This book gives a general presentation of some recent developments in wavelet theory with an emphasis on techniques that have a geometric and spectral-theoretic flavor. It can be certainly used as a textbook for graduate students as well as as a reference book for the specialists and researchers. A very nice feature of the book are the tutorials at the beginning of each chapter and some sections, which serve as summaries of main ideas and guides through the background ideas and motivation. At the end of every chapter there are plenty of excercises of various level of difficulty. Overall, this is a great book and I recommend it highly to a motivated reader.

This book explores the ways in which Protestants have used and continue to use hymns to clarify their identity and define their relationship with America and to Christianity. Representing seven groups--Baptists, Presbyterians, Lutherans, Mennonites, Holiness, Hispanics, and Evangelicals--the nine essays reveal how hymns have helped immigrants to establish new identities, contributed to the body of worship resources, and sustained ethnic identity.
Individual essays address the music of the Old-Fashioned Revival Hour, America's longest running and most successful independent radio program; singing among Swedish evangelicals in America; the German hymn tradition as transformed by Mennonite immigrants; the ways hymnody reinforces themes of the Wesleyan holiness movement; the history of "Mercer's Cluster" (1810), a southern hymnal that gave voice to slaves, women, and native Americans; and the Presbyterian hymnal tradition in Canada formed by Scottish immigrants.

Good work for someone interested in North American hymns

Singing the Lord's Song in a Strange land describes the cultural beliefs and lay theology of American Christianity through the use of hymn music. Particularly, it is focused on how immigrants of all different stripes and from different places used (or didn't use), adapted and adopted what they had to work with once they arrived in America, debated whether or not to use the American hymn tradition, and how this affected attitudes towards all of those late Twentieth Century classification schemes (race, class, sex, etc.).

Seeing these are articles by different scholars representing different people groups, I will simply list the people groups that are treated in this book, rather than go into detail about each. The individual people groups discussed are Georgian slaves, women, and Native Americans, Canadian and North American Presbyterians, Swedish immigrants, German and Russian Mennonite communities, Pentecostal and Holiness movements (some of which are actually heterodox or heretical sects, - which is noted), and Latino Protestantism.

This work is a scholarly work, and is likely better suited for someone who is either highly interested in the topic that is willing to be introduced to new names or someone who already knows something of the material. Otherwise it might be a bit dry. However, studying theology from a perspective of music is something that is widely overlooked, especially by systematic theologians. It's often not considered 'real' theology. However, historian Mark Noll has noted that this idea should be put to rest: ". . . evangelicalism is at its best when seen through its hymns" (xiii). The systematics might not like it and might not understand expressing theological truth through song simply because most systematic theologians don't do that themselves. While I come less from an artistic background, this book showed me that ignoring our (evangelical tradition) hymnal tradition is only detrimental.

Although they wrote in the same historical milieu as their male counterparts, women writers of the 19th- and early 20th-centuries have generally been "ghettoized" by critics into a separate canonical sphere. These original essays argue in favor of reconciling male and female writers, both historically and in the context of classroom teaching.
 While some of the essays pair up female and male authors who write in a similar style or with similar concerns, others address social issues shared by both men and women, including class tensions, economic problems, and the Civil War experience. Rather than privileging particular genres or certain well-known writers, the contributors examine writings ranging from novels and poetry to autobiography, utopian fiction, and essays. And they consider familiar figures like Harriet Beecher Stowe, Emily Dickinson, and Ralph Waldo Emerson alongside such lesser-known writers as Melusina Fay Peirce, Susie King Taylor, and Mary Gove Nichols.
 Each essay revises the binary notions that have been ascribed to males and females, such as public and private, rational and intuitive, political and domestic, violent and passive. Although they do not deny the existence of separate spheres, the contributors show the boundary between them to be much more blurred than has been assumed until now.

1995 marked the 50th anniversary of Stefan Banach's death. Until now, the general English speaking public has had no access to an in-depth life story of a mathematician whose name is one of those most often encountered in modern mathematical research. This small volume, originally written in Polish by a well-known reporter, is an effort to fill that gap in the biographical literature. It is based on original archival sources, dozens of interviews with people who knew and remember Banach, and conversations with mathematicians who are familiar with Banach's work and its impact on modern mathematics. The author presents engaging descriptions of Banach's personality and the unusual milieu in which he worked. Further, Chapter V focuses on the famous Scottish café, which like Banach himself, has achieved a mythical dimension in mathematical lore. The English edition has been revised to include new materials and many photographs, and to reflect the interests of a broader international audience.

This is a wonderful compilation of stories about religion in the deep South. I could identify with something from each of the stories. It brings to light many of the troubling aspects of finding and holding on to faith.

In the analysis and synthesis of contemporary systems, engineers and scientists are frequently confronted with increasingly complex models that may simultaneously include components whose states evolve along continuous time and discrete instants; components whose descriptions may exhibit nonlinearities, time lags, transportation delays, hysteresis effects, and uncertainties in parameters; and components that cannot be described by various classical equations, as in the case of discrete-event systems, logic commands, and Petri nets. The qualitative analysis of such systems requires results for finite-dimensional and infinite-dimensional systems; continuous-time and discrete-time systems; continuous continuous-time and discontinuous continuous-time systems; and hybrid systems involving a mixture of continuous and discrete dynamics.

Filling a gap in the literature, this textbook presents the first comprehensive stability analysis of all the major types of system models described above. Throughout the book, the applicability of the developed theory is demonstrated by means of many specific examples and applications to important classes of systems, including digital control systems, nonlinear regulator systems, pulse-width-modulated feedback control systems, artificial neural networks (with and without time delays), digital signal processing, a class of discrete-event systems (with applications to manufacturing and computer load balancing problems) and a multicore nuclear reactor model.

The book covers the following four general topics:

* Representation and modeling of dynamical systems of the types described above

* Presentation of Lyapunov and Lagrange stability theory for dynamical systems defined on general metric spaces

* Specialization of this stability theory to finite-dimensional dynamical systems
