Review

“Closely associated deposits of iron ore, limestone, and coal enabled foundry-grade iron to be made here more cheaply than anywhere else in the nation. . . . From Tannehill, which began making iron in 1830, to the Sloss City Furnaces, which helped make Birmingham the ‘Pittsburgh of the South,’ history buffs and tourists alike can walk the very pathways of the old iron workers.”

Good but Brief Guidebook to Selected Birmingham Area Industrial Heritage Sites
By W. White
"Iron and Steel: A Guide to the Birmingham Area Industrial Heritage" is a good pocket guidebook to some selected industrial heritage sites in the Birmingham area, all in what was known during the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries as the Birmingham District.

"Iron and Steel" chronicles the histories for thirteen, nearly all publically accessable industrial heritage sites (all are parks with the exception of Oxmoor Furnace and Helena Rolling Mills) that span from antebellum ruins at Tannehill and Brierfield to later landmarks like Sloss Furnace and the Vulcan statue.

The book is a short one and should not be considered a comprehensive guide to every industrial heritage site in the Birmingham area. Its small size makes it ideal as a pocket guide, but it still could have been a little larger and more comprehensive without reducing its portability; though I surmise that the authors selected sites based upon extant remains over historical significance in some cases. The text itself is quite a large font for the book's small size; that, coupled with the fact that nearly every page has an illustration, means that there is not much more than a basic overview of the selected sites. I would recommend it for the reader beginning to learn about Birmingham's industrial heritage. For someone who already has some knowledge of the Birmingham District's industrial heritage, it is certainly no replacement for the out-of-print "The Birmingham District: an Industrial History and Guide" nor the classic history "Alabama Blast Furnaces (Library Alabama Classics)."
