She has done fieldwork in Italy (Sardinia), Canada (Alberta), and Mexico (Chiapas and Yucatán) and has published mainly on globalization and cooperatives in Italy and Mexico and music and dance in Canada and Mexico. Excellent advice, could use an update

Lee Frost is an extremely able photographer who also happens to be quite a practical businessman. In Photos That Sell, he shares a good deal of what he has learned about taking and marketing photos successfully. He begins by walking you through the main markets that are likely to be open to your work and then moves on to what types of shots you can best hope to sell. Helping to iilustrate all of this is a collection of hundreds of Mr. Frost's photos. The variety and quality of these photographs is worth the price of the book all by themselves. It's fairly impressive how deftly he shifts between portraiture, landscape, and still life photography.

If this book has a shortcoming, it is that it could stand revising to bring it current. In the digital age, things have a way of changing quickly and this book is now 5 years old. While the book does cover digital technology, it was written in a time when digital cameras were far less capable than they currently are and many markets have opened up to them as they have improved.

Overall, I would certainly recommend the book. If the author brings out a new edition to cover the ever-increasing role of digital photography then purchasing it will be a must for budding freelancers.

The BEST book on Stock Photography

I've read a lot of books on the stock photography industry and this book is by far the best. When I first got it a year ago I paid too much attention to the extraordinary photography and not enough to Lee's text. Recently, I went back and very carefully, slowly (one or two pages a day) studied Lee's advice. I've sold images myself to clients around the world and can tell you this book is what you need if you're interested in selling images. It's accurate, complete, and packed with tips that few others would be willing to share. I have and will continue to look back to this book for ideas in producing my own work. The author provides great advice across the range of stock subject matter as well as the various markets.

The are two things that really make this book shine though. The first is the numerous photographs accompanied by sales info: number of sales, where it sold, and the total sales to date in U.S. dollars. Not all the images in the book have this information (most have the standard equipment and exposure stats), but some do. Next, there are several two-page interviews with other stock photographers. They share their backgrounds, markets, and tips.

Buy this book. It's worth it!

The straight scoop

As other reviewers before this one have already stated, this is the bible for free lance photography. It tells you what to shoot and how to market your work. It also becomes apparent as one reads this book that there is a lot of extra work, and a lot of expense, involved in this business. It's maybe 25% taking pictures with the other 75% taken up with preparation, sales and marketing, bookkeeping, etc.It involves taking thousands of pictures and keeping them on file with a picture library. There are pointers from professionals on what sells and how they work. Several, believe it or not, manage to do it while holding down a full time job elsewhere.As for expense, many shots you will have to taken with a medium format system if you hope to find a market; lots and lots of film; computer programs; labels, etc.If you're planning a career in this business, read this book first. Lee Frost will tell you exactly what you are up against.

Everything is Clear to the Authors, if not to their Readers

The authors state in the preface to their book that their goal is to provide "a thorough approach to semi-Markov processes and their applications in reliability". This is an ambitious objective for a 222 page text, since a large body of research on Semi-Markov processes has developed over the course of the last forty years or so.

In the opinion of this reviewer, Limnios & Oprisan never even come close to their grand objective. Their book is simply too short, too terse and too condensed to give a thorough treatment. The authors realized early on that they would need to reference the vast body of literature. It is strange to this reviewer that their treatment, copyright 2001, chooses as its main references out-of-print French texts by Neveu (1964) and Janssen (1969). The authors' choice of difficult-to-find auxiliary references makes their treatment that much less accessible.

The prerequisite list here is extensive. The authors claim that all that is required is an understanding of Markov Chains, like you might find in Stroock's An Introduction to Markov Processes or Norris' Markov Chains. Furthermore, the authors claim to cover the following list of topics in the first 29 pages of their book (which comprises Chapter 1): measure theory, Laplace transforms and continuous-time Markov processes. In reality, Limnios & Oprisan introduce (barely) these and other topics including: stopping times, the Optional Stopping Theorem, stationary stochastic processes, martingale theory, Ergodic theory, strong Markov Processes and renewal processes.

In order to get through the first chapter of Limnios & Oprisan, you'll need an excellent background in these topics. I recommend Rogers & Williams 800 page, two-volume set Diffusions, Markov Processes, and Martingales: Volume 1, Foundations and Diffusions, Markov Processes and Martingales: Volume 2, Itô Calculus.

Chapter 2 runs a mere 18 pages and purports to cover "Markov Renewal Processes". I stopped counting how many times the authors give references to out-of-print books in this chapter. I also lost count of the number of times the authors use the phrases "it is straightforward", "it is easy to show", or "it is well-known", in the context of mathematical problems having none of the above properties.

This book is useful to the reader in one sense: it whets the appetite for an understanding of Semi-Markov Processes and Reliability Theory and puts this reviewer in the market for a well-written book on the topic.

Good book for the right audience

The previous reviewer is correct that this is a very concise book, and the authors' statement in the preface that the material is "within the reach of those who have had a first course in probability" is a wild exaggeration. In reality, a good prerequisite would be some familiarity with measure-theoretic probability (e.g., including Lebesgue-Stieltjes integration and things like the Borel-Cantelli lemma) plus an acquaintance with stochastic processes at the level of Ross's Stochastic Processes. The book does contain some excellent appendices summarizing prerequisite topics, but these would only be suitable as a review, not to learn the material. Nevertheless, for the mathematically prepared (or those willing to really put some time and effort into it) this is an excellent (probably the best available) compendium of modern research on semi-Markov processes as applied to reliability and survival analysis.

Those more interested in applications and practical techniques for semi-Markov processes would find Flowgraph Models for Multistate Time-to-Event Data (Wiley Series in Probability and Statistics) of interest, or the chapter on semi-Markov processes in Fundamentals of Queueing Theory (Wiley Series in Probability and Statistics). But for researchers and others looking for a comprehensive treatment of theoretical issues, I would highly recommend this book

However, some of them such as those of Scheffe (1959) and Fisher and McDonald (1978), are written for mathematically advanced readers, requiring a good background in calculus, matrix algebra, and statistical theory; whereas others such as Guenther (1964), Huitson (1971), and Dunn and Clark (1987), although they assume only a background in elementary algebra and statistics, treat the subject somewhat scantily and provide only a superficial discussion of the random and mixed effects analysis of variance.

This is the right book to use when you start studying Anova models.
(after obtaining the right prerequisites)
Unlike many books on Anova out there this book is highly readable.
It presents the ideas and techniques behind Anova in a clear and cohesive manner.
As an applied stat. phd student I have come across may books on Anova and this one strikes the perfect balance between intuition and rigorous statistics.
Wish I had come across this book earlier.

A Good Book At Last

This is the most comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of the analysis of variance models I have seen since the publication of the book by Henry Scheffe (1959) which is somewhat out of date. The mathematical and statistical prerequisites of Sahai and Ageel book are just about right for students in substantive fields who wish to take this course after completing one/two semester course in statistical inference. The book is well written and user friendly and contains a large number of worked examples and exercises which have been very helpful to me in assigning homework to my students. The coverage of SAS, SPSS and BMDP packages for performing analysis greatly enhances the practical usefulness of the book beyond any measure. The inclusion of a large number of appendices as review material and up-to-date and complete bibliography including a comprehensive set of statistical tables have immensely increased the reference value of the text. The authors deserve my most sincere and heartiest congratulations. I have prepared a more extensive and complete cirtique of the book for my students which can be obtained by writing to me. Dr. M.M. A Good Book At Last
