Willoughby explains how the businessmen associated with the area's cotton trade coped with the poor conditions of transportation, communication, money and banking. Early regional economics revolved around the rivers that represented the primary transportation arteries for trade in the Old South. Cotton businessmen located along the waterway and on the coast neatly divided the labour necessary to market the region's major source of income. Local money and banking conditions retarded the economic growth of this frontier area, and only the innovations of these coastal businessmen enabled the continuance of this vital trade network. The advent of the railroad shattered this ongoing business arrangement and completely altered the cohesiveness of the river economy. Railroads fundamentally changed the business customs and trade routes so that boundaries of the once-separate river economies blurred and eventually faded, gradually leading to an integrated national economy.

Excellent reference for the 19th century cotton industry

This book is unique in its subject matter. It helps today's reader understand the importance of the entire cotton production, trade, and manufacture.
Ms. Willoughby writes that the cotton trade's impact rippled over many other segments of the national economy and she quotes from another writer that this fiber has been called the most significant ingredient in the economic life of the whole nation [United States] before 1860.
The book describes the connection of cotton to currency and to banking and shows in detail how the banking system was vastly different from our present financial institutions.
The author stresses that much of the cotton business depended on the reputaions of individual men from the planter to the final purchaser and she gives short biographical descriptions of many key individuals.
Transportation facilities were vital to the moving of the cotton from the farm or plantation to the mill. The book describes the importance of vessels and shipping in every phase of the process and also the part that the early railroads played in making important changes in the entire ecomomy.

A Fantastic Romp

Blanchard's text is an excelent journey through a variety of topics in mathematical physics. The language is clearly more closely related to an advanced physics text than a math text, and Blanchard strives to give explanations as well as just rigorous proofs to accompany his results. It makes for a truly interesting read where one can gain essential details without having to necessarily be weighed down by long proofs (which are usually set in a smaller font so as to allow one to skip them at will).

The choice of exercises is likewise superb, ranging from the trivial to the truly difficult. It is not, however, too uncommon to find that one needs more knoweldge than can be found in the text to really complete a problem. Students of this text would be better suited adding at least two courses in real analysis to Blanchard's suggested list.

Still, the selection of important topics to cover is great, the examples chosen are lucid, and the exposition is memorable. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an interesting read, who is unfamiliar with distributions or hilbert space operators in particular.

An Inspirational Book

This book is worth the price for the breathtaking images alone. More importantly, John Shaw's ability to explain complex photographic issues and techniques with clarity makes this one of the best "how to" books I have ever read on any topic.
Here are a few of the book's features that I especially appreciate with each re-reading:
1. Thorough technical details beside each shot; 2. Emphasis on appreciating nature, and enjoying nature photography; 3. Appreciation of good photo gear for its effectiveness and convenience, combined with suggestions for improvising to reduce expense (such as how to shoot arresting closeups without investing in a macro lens); 4. Lots of Nikon-specific equipment references, but mentions Canon equivalents; 5. Ethical, urging photographers not to harass creatures or damage plants in the wilderness; 6. Did I mention the breathtaking images?
His newer "Nature Photography Field Guide" is also brilliant,and equally full of superb images, valuable tips, and further inspiration. There is little overlap between the two.
"Closeups in Nature" opens up a new world of perception and expression for photographers. Treat yourself or a photographer friend to a copy.

images of natures tiny subjects

If you're interested in nature photography and especially macro work, get this book before you spend a ton of money on confusing and/or expensive equipment (ie macro lenses, diopter sets, extension tubes, lens reversal rings etc.) John is easy to read and covers about everything you need to know about how to capture natures tiny subjects on film. Although the book is a bit old, basic photo techniques don't change and his love of photography is contagious. Buy this book and you'll be out in your yard within hours, camera in hand. He is a firm believer in the old saying "necessity is the mother of invention". From calibrating your light meter, using the palm of your hand to estimate midtone exposure, making homemade flash brackets or reflectors from coolwhip containers and tin foil, he covers it all. He reviews the basics of exposure, flash, different film pros and cons and explains all the basic macro equipment so you know what lenses and equipment will and won't do for you.

The best book on close-up photography. All practical methods

I have attended workshops taught by John Shaw, sitting on the
side of a flower covered mountain, listening to John discuss
macro technique. This book caries all of the character and
clarity of being there listening to him in person. John Shaw's
work is undoubtedly some of the best nature closeup work
around and this book gives you all his tricks. The photographs
in the book are excellent technically and provide wonderfull
examples for the techniques explained in the book.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a complete
overview of different macro techniques and/or detailed
instruction on any of these techniques. He gives you all the
options for macro technique without spending major dollars on
unneeded equipment.
