Fieldworks: From Place to Site in Postwar Poetics (Modern & Contemporary Poetics), by Lytle Shaw

Fieldworks offers a historical account of the social, rhetorical, and material attempts to ground art and poetry in the physicality of a site.

Arguing that place-oriented inquiries allowed poets and artists to develop new, experimental models of historiography and ethnography, Lytle Shaw draws out the shifting terms of this practice from World War II to the present through a series of illuminating case studies. Beginning with the alternate national genealogies unearthed by William Carlos Williams in Paterson and Charles Olson in Gloucester, Shaw demonstrates how subsequent poets sought to ground such inquiries in concrete social formations—to in effect live the poetics of place: Gary Snyder in his back-to-the-land familial compound, Kitkitdizze; Amiri Baraka in a black nationalist community in Newark; Robert Creeley and the poets of Bolinas, California, in the capacious “now” of their poet-run town. Turning to the work of Robert Smithson—who called one of his essays an “appendix to Paterson,” and who in turn has exerted a major influence on poets since the 1970s—Shaw then traces the emergence of site-specific art in relation both to the poetics of place and to the larger linguistic turn in the humanities, considering poets including Clark Coolidge, Bernadette Mayer, and Lisa Robertson.

By putting the poetics of place into dialog with site-specificity in art, Shaw demonstrates how poets and artists became experimental explicators not just of concrete locations and their histories, but of the discourses used to interpret sites more broadly. It is this dual sense of fieldwork that organizes Shaw’s groundbreaking history of site-specific poetry.

Review

“In Fieldworks Lytle Shaw makes a brilliant case for a site-specific approach to poetry by foregrounding cultural history, community, installation, anthologizing, process, presentation, and context. In his series of detailed studies, Shaw uses the vocabulary and framing of contemporary visual art criticism to illuminate the dynamic role of place in postwar American poetry.”—Charles Bernstein, author of Girly Man and Attack of the Difficult Poems: Essays and Inventions

“Fieldworks is inventive, provocative, and readable from start to finish. It is rare to encounter a manuscript that discusses both contemporary poetry and the contemporary visual arts and does so with equal sophistication and creativity.”—Brian M. Reed, author of Hart Crane: After His Lights and Phenomenal Reading: Essays on Modern and Contemporary Poetry

About the Author

Algebra, by Israel M. Gelfand, Alexander Shen

This book is about algebra. This is a very old science and its gems have lost their charm for us through everyday use. We have tried in this book to refresh them for you. The main part of the book is made up of problems. The best way to deal with them is: Solve the problem by yourself - compare your solution with the solution in the book (if it exists) - go to the next problem. However, if you have difficulties solving a problem (and some of them are quite difficult), you may read the hint or start to read the solution. If there is no solution in the book for some problem, you may skip it (it is not heavily used in the sequel) and return to it later. The book is divided into sections devoted to different topics. Some of them are very short, others are rather long. Of course, you know arithmetic pretty well. However, we shall go through it once more, starting with easy things. 2 Exchange of terms in addition Let's add 3 and 5: 3+5=8. And now change the order: 5+3=8. We get the same result. Adding three apples to five apples is the same as adding five apples to three - apples do not disappear and we get eight of them in both cases. 3 Exchange of terms in multiplication Multiplication has a similar property. But let us first agree on notation.

Review

“The idea behind teaching is to expect students to learn why things are true, rather than have them memorize ways of solving a few problems, as most of our books have done. [This] same philosophy lies behind the current text by Gelfand and Shen. There are specific ‘practical’ problems but there is much more development of the ideas … [The authors] have shown how to write a serious yet lively look at algebra.”   ―The American Mathematics Monthly

“Were ‘Algebra’ to be used solely for supplementary reading, it could be wholeheartedly recommended to any high school student of any teacher … In fact, given the long tradition of mistreating algebra as a disjointed collection of techniques in the schools, there should be some urgency in making this book compulsory reading for anyone interested in learning mathematics.”   ―The Mathematical Intelligencer

Beautifully written!
By Shelly S
I bought this book for my daughter (10 years old) and we read it together. We went very slow and I supplement it with a work book. She likes it. I was impressed by the beauty of this book. It might be a little too slim for a textbook but every kid who wants to learn algebra should read it. More than teaching algebra it shows what math should be: simple and beautiful.

My daughter's math textbook is 5 pounds and I can't even stand looking at it. I understand that not every is enthusiastic about math and not everyone can feel the beauty of math. But you don't have to make math so ugly.

Learning math with a 5 lb textbook is simply terrifying but if your kid goes to public school you probably have no choice. Let you kid read a good book like this one, as early as possible, before he(she) grows a life time aversion to math.

I can't think of a title. Just buy the book!
By Herbert Powell
Well, H. Wu on his page and N.F Taussig here have written quite good reviews, so I guess I can't really add anything new. Still, I feel the need to praise this book some more. Could it be used for a main text or should it be just a supplement? I don't know, but there is much more mathematics contained in these 149 pages than in any standard 500 page high school text on the market today. That's the unsurprising result of accomplished mathematicians writing a math book. Sure, some topics are missing. You won't find 3 or 4 chapters devoted to the several "different" ways to graph a line. There aren't fifty problems in a row that start with "suppose Sam rows upstream at 5 miles per hour and it takes her seven times as long as..." Unfortunately, there isn't even a treatment of complex numbers, the only omission that seems wrong.

You will find several interesting and serious topics that would be dangerous to bright students who insist they hate math, or rather what they've been told is math. Imagine their initial embarrassment when they find out that they can enjoy the subject! Maybe more importantly, imagine their relief when they realize that there IS a reason why we "FOIL", there IS a reason why negative times negative is positive, there IS a reason why we say a^(-1)=1/a, and it's not because "the teacher said so" or "that's just the rule" (ok, it is the rule, but now you'll see why). And there's no attempt to sneak anything by the reader. The authors are quick to acknowledge any gaps in their reasoning, and to assure the reader that in the future he or she will fill them.

It's this honesty and attention to rigor without being too formal or dry that give this book some extra charm. It moves smoothly from basic arithmetic (which everyone should still read if only to learn a different way of explaining it to a student/younger sibling/child) all the way to proofs, both algebraic and visual when possible, of some important inequalities. Cauchy's inductive proof, first for powers of two and then filling in the gaps, of the AM-GM inequality is here, as is the standard proof of Cauchy-Schwarz by the discriminant of a polynomial. Go to your local high school and look at its algebra book. I doubt that's in there.

I'll end with a few of the funny, sometimes weird, little remarks:

After illustrating the associative law using the example (sugar + coffee) + milk = sugar + (coffee + milk), the next problem is: "Problem 25. Try it."

"Please keep in mind that a monomial is a polynomial, so sometimes for a mathematician one is many."

"Probably you are discouraged by this solution because it seems impossible to invent it. The authors share your feeling."

One section begins: "62. How to confuse students on an exam: As usual, there are many evil ways to make use of knowledge."

Great approach, but not suitable to modern study
By B. Hoffert
As a returning college undergrad studying a math-heavy field, I picked up Gelfand's Algebra hoping to rejuvenate my very rusty algebra skills. To be honest, I didn't even learn algebra that well when I first studied it over a decade ago, but I slid by as a stereotypical "math student" in grade school. I wanted to do it right this time, and I'd heard very good things about this book.

I want to start with the positives, because there are many. If you're someone put off by the modern way of teaching math that forgoes all explanations and intuition in favor of step-by-step guides and formulas, then you'll appreciate Gelfand's approach to the field of algebra. Each subject is treated in a learn-by-doing fashion, and nothing is spoon fed. Clever intuitive explanations are provided for many topics that most books just take for granted. If you work your way through the entire book and all of its problems, you'll come away with algebraic understanding and intuition that probably exceeds that of most undergraduate math majors at the college level. As I said, I wanted to learn algebra the "right way" this time around, and I definitely achieved my goal through this book.

That said, this book has some pretty major flaws to the point that I have trouble actually recommending it. In fact, I don't think I'd even recommend it to my past self.

First, of the hundreds of exercises provided throughout the book, it feels like less than half of them have solutions provided. The author tries to explain that any problem without a solution is okay to skip if you can't solve it, but that explanation just isn't good enough. The fact is that the meat of this book is its problems, and if you skipped every problem without a solution, you'd probably learn less algebra than you would from a standard textbook. Like I said, Gelfand's approach is very learn-by-doing, but he doesn't give you the proper tools to actually "do" everything you're supposed to "learn." In fact, many problems build on previous problems, so if you skip any of them you risk triggering a cascade of unsolvable exercises that will leave you frustrated and confused. It's not like these are routine calculations you're doing, either. Most of the problems require creative problem solving, significant trial and error, or out of the box thinking to solve. There's nothing inherently wrong with this (in fact I love this approach, as it builds vital mathematical intuition and "real" math skills), but without solutions there's no way to check the correctness of your answer. If you get stuck (and you WILL get stuck), there's nothing you can do. Simply put, the challenge level of some of these problems is such that the typical math student is bound to encounter several of them that they will never solve on their own, and there's no way for them to help themselves along. I've heard some people suggest that the lack of solutions is good because that way you're forced to work through the problem on your own, but as someone with the self control to give each exercise a nice long, honest attempt, I found it to be a major hindrance to my learning. After hours of searching, I managed to find a document online with solutions to the unsolved problems, and that's the only way I was able to work my way through the book.

Second, much of the wording in this book is ambiguous, and in some cases there are major errors. It's not always clear what an exercise is asking you to do, and the mistakes can really set you back and waste your time. The subject matter is difficult enough without throwing away hours of effort just because the book didn't give you clear instructions or explanations.

Third, there's just not enough reinforcement in this book. On this plus side, this means you're learning something new with each and every exercise, but the problem is that the near-zero repetition doesn't leave much room for the learning to sink in. I would have really appreciated a handful of reinforcement problems for the most essential concepts.

As a tutoring aid, this book would probably get 5 stars. In that situation, the tutor can have worked everything out ahead of time and guide the student through the many challenges in this book. But as a self-study tool, or even a classroom text, this classic tome has a few too many issues. It earns 3 stars for the high quality of Gelfand's approach and explanations, but the issues with the exercises keep it from a true recommendation. If this book were to be republished some day with corrections and a full set of solutions, I would have no problem giving it 5 stars.

Riemannian Geometry, by Manfredo Perdigao do Carmo

Riemannian Geometry is an expanded edition of a highly acclaimed and successful textbook (originally published in Portuguese) for first-year graduate students in mathematics and physics. The author's treatment goes very directly to the basic language of Riemannian geometry and immediately presents some of its most fundamental theorems. It is elementary, assuming only a modest background from readers, making it suitable for a wide variety of students and course structures. Its selection of topics has been deemed "superb" by teachers who have used the text.

A significant feature of the book is its powerful and revealing structure, beginning simply with the definition of a differentiable manifold and ending with one of the most important results in Riemannian geometry, a proof of the Sphere Theorem. The text abounds with basic definitions and theorems, examples, applications, and numerous exercises to test the student's understanding and extend knowledge and insight into the subject. Instructors and students alike will find the work to be a significant contribution to this highly applicable and stimulating subject.

Best 1st semester Riemannian Geometry book after 1 semester DG
By Christina Sormani
This is the best Riemannian Geometry book after students have finished a semester of differential geometry. It gives geometric intuition, has plenty of exercises and

is excellent preparation for more advanced books like Cheeger-Ebin.

Students should already know differential geometry (Spivak "Calculus on manifolds" and Spivak "Differential Geometry Volume I" might be used there)

Warning: the curvature tensor is defined backwards as compared to Cheeger-Ebin.

Excellent stepping stone to more advanced treatments
By Paul A. Bonyak
Though this text lacks a categorical flavor with commutative diagrams, pull-backs, etc. it is still at an intermediate to advanced level. Nevertheless, constructs are developed which are assumed in a categorical treatment. It does do Hopf-Rinow, Rauch Comparison, and the Morse Index Theorems which you would find in a text like Bishop-Crittendon. However, it does the Sphere Theorem, an advanced theorem dependent on the Morse Theory/calculus of variations methods in differential geometry. Even "energy" is treated which is the kinetic energy functional integral used to determine minimal geodesics, reminiscent of the Maupertuis Principle in mechanics.
The reader is assumed to be familiar with differentiable manifolds but a somewhat scant Chapter 0 is given which mostly collects results which will be needed later. The treatment is dominated by the "coordinate-free" approach so emphasis is on the tangent plane or space and properties intrinsic to the surface with only a brief section on tensor methods given. Realize the tangent space has the same dimension as the surface to which it is tangent and this can be greater than 2. If you remember from advanced calculus, you took the gradient of a function of n variables (the function maps to a constant as a sphere say does). The gradient defined the normal to the(n-1) dimensional tangent hyperplane to the surface. The surface is also (n-1) dimensional since given (n-1) values to the variables the nth value is determined by the function equation implicitly. Note in this construction we used the embedding in our interpretation, nevertheless this gradient/tangent hyperplane notion can be given an intrinsically defined method of getting the tangent space through the related notion of the directional derivative. Forging this to a linear tangent space is a key construct which the reader should grasp, one not available in Gauss's lifetime. The text by Boothby is more user-friendly here and is also available online as a free PDF. Boothby essentially covers the first five chapters of do Carmo (including Chapter 0) filling in many of the gaps.
Both in Boothby and do Carmo the affine connection makes appearance axiomatically and the covariant derivative results from imposed conditions in a theorem construct. If this is a bit hard to chew (it was for me) there are exercises 1 and 2 on pp. 56-57 of do Carmo in which you are to show how the affine connection and covariant derivative arise from parallel transport. Theorem 3.12 of Chapter VII in Boothby does this a bit too formally but you can find it in various forms on the web. In particular there is a nice one where the tangent planes are related along the curve over which the parallel transport or propagation occurs resulting in a differential equation which gives both the affine connection and the covariant derivative. Just Google "parallel transport and covariant derivative."
I have certain quibbles like in defining the Riemannian metric as a bilinear symmetric form,i.e., his notation is a bit dated here and there but the text shines from chapter 5 on. So 5 stars.
P.S. There's a PDF entitled "An Introduction to Riemannian Geometry" by Sigmundur Gudmundsson which is free and short and is tailor made for do Carmo assuming only advanced calculus as in say rigorous proof of inverse function theorem or the first nine (or ten) chapters of Rudin's Principles 3rd. It does assume some familiarity with differential geometry in R^3 as in do Carmo's earlier text but you can probably fill this in from the web if you're not familiar from past coursework as in vector analysis. Differential manifold and tangent space are clearly developed without the topological detours-pretty much if you're familiar with the derivative as a linear map (as in Rudin), you're at the right level. Also Lang's "Introduction to Differentiable Manifolds" is available as a free PDF if you want to see the categorical treatment after you get through do Carmo-can also be used for reference concurrently, example-isomorphic linear spaces?

Whether To Read It
By Brook(LifeOfThePartyWoot)
:a full textbook of Riemannian geometry. it exists without linear difficulties that causes Euclidean geometry to eventually break down at points of movement.
:apparently the geometry that begins with an E and arrives from Greece is for the arrangement of numbers; thats why it looks at the sides of shapes. try and dont think its for music though.
:if youre looking for a full textbook of Riemannian geometry then look no further; and dont purchase the text by the name of Riemannian Geometry As A Field Over Another Geometry; that text is a doctoral thesis which has little or no connection to the desirable full textbook for sale on the site.

Review

"The introduction (Chapter 1) gives an excellent overview of the history and development of sampling theory. It shows that the WSK sampling theory has roots in many classical areas of mathematics, such as harmonic analysis, number theory, and interpolation theory. Many famous mathematicians, such as Cauchy, Borel, Hadamard, and de la Vallee-Poussin contributed directly or indirectly to its development. The introduction then proceeds to show how sampling theory is connected to more recent topics in mathematical analysis, such as wavelets, Gabor systems, density theorems, frames, and sampling in locally compact abelian groups."

―Mathematical Reviews

"Engineers and mathematicians working in wavelets, signal processing, and harmonic analysis, as well as scientists and engineers working on applications as varied as medical imaging and synthetic aperture radar, will find the book to be a modern and authoritative guide to sampling theory."

The Very Worst Road: Travellers' Accounts of Crossing Alabama's Old Creek Indian Territory, 1820-1847 (Alabama Fire Ant)From University

The Very Worst Road contains sixteen contemporary accounts by travelers who reached Alabama along what was known as the “Old Federal Road,” more a network of paths than a single road, that ran from Columbus and points south in Georgia for more or less due west into central Alabama and to where the confluence of the Tallapoosa and Coosa Rivers forms the Alabama River.   These accounts deal candidly with the rather remarkable array of impediments that faced travelers in Alabama in its first decades as a state, and they describe with wonder, interest, and, frequently with some disgust, the road, the inns, the travelling companions, and the few and raw communities they encountered as they made their way, often with difficulty, through what seemed to many of them uncharted wilderness. The Very Worst Road was originally published by the Historic Chattahoochee Commission in 1998.

Review
“One of the best [writings on early highways] is a little book titled The Very Worst Road, a compilation of the nightmarish accounts of travelers on the old Federal Road that crossed from Georgia through former Creek Indian lands to near Montgomery, where it jagged south. Built through mud and swamps as a corduroy log route, it was a universe apart from smooth, bland Interstate 85, which parallels part of the old road today.” —Ben Windham, Tuscaloosa News

A fascinating book that I could not put down!
By Willie Butts (wwwbutts@aol.com)
This book provides an eyewitness account of the events which were going on in the southeastern states, and probably over the rest of the country, during the period when the Indian people were being degraded and their culture destoyed and replaced by the European. It paints a picture, through the eyes of literate travelers, of the wonderful wilderness that was the American south as it gave way to settlement and the plow. This vivid picture cannot be told as well by any historian as it was by those who lived it and told it in their own words as they traveled through this primitive and sometimes dangerous land.

Worst Road in Alabama
By Tom
This book actually had more than I expected. It gave me a sence of what the road and area looked like when many of my realtions came to Alabama from as early as 1817 to 1836 several of my Grandcestors came over from Georgia.

Surprizingly great little book!
By Cindy M
I have recommended this book to my friends this way. So...it appears that there was no Travel Channel in 1820! So the travelers took scribes with them who very eloquently wrote about all of the sights and sounds of the trips that the people took. This is how we know what the Indian tribes looked like and how they lived in great detail. These are my ancestors so I read this with great interest but I believe this book will be interesting to anyone. These people wrote well and their subjects were raw and colorful. Great stuff!! I could not put it down.

Review

From the reviews:

"Andreescu's 51 'introductory problems' and 51 'advanced problems,' all novel, would nicely supplement any university course in combinatorics or discrete mathematics. This volume contains detailed solutions, sometimes multiple solutions, for all the problems, and some solutions offer additional twists for further thought . . . "

―CHOICE

"Another excellent effort towards building combinatorial skills especially for students engaged in mathematical competitions is presented in this book through 102 selected Combinatorial problems."

―ZENTRALBLATT MATH

"Each solution is given in full, and often with alternative versions as well. Some solutions introduce standard combinatorial tools like inclusion-exclusion, generating functions, and graphs. Others stray into probability, number theory, complex numbers, inequalities and functional equations. The book will be useful for teachers looking for challenging problems for able students and for those preparing for Olympiads."

―The MATHEMATICAL GAZETTE

"This book contains 102 highly selected combinatorial problems used in the training and testing of the USA International Mathematical Olympiad team. Half of the problems are introductory, while the rest are more difficult. All problems have complete solutions. . . It is not a collection of very difficult, impenetrable questions. Instead, the book gradually builds students' combinatorial skills and techniques. It aims to broaden a student's view of mathematics in perparation for possible participation in mathematical competitions."

―IASI POLYTECHNIC MAGAZINE

"Both of the two authors serves as a coach of the USA International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) Team for several years. … the book gradually builds students’ combinatorial skills and techniques. It aims to broaden a student’s view of mathematics in preparation for possible participation in mathematical competitions. … this is a book for problem-solvers. … The present collection of problems and the presented solutions are carefully designed to develop the readers’ problem-solving abilities. … Have fun working on them!" A well selected and organized problem set in combinatorics.
By Sen Peng Eu
This is an excellent training source in combinatorics for mathematics olympiads and contests.
Problems in this book are divided into 2 sets, with each set containing 51 problems. Problems in the first set are introductory ones (hence, relatively easy), and that in the second set are advanced problems (And harder, much harder indeed in the last few problems). Problems are very well selected and carefully organized according to their difficulty and technic involved. They span from the very easy first some enumerative problems to the really hard IMO-level, even notorious National-MO problems. Moreover, problems are up-to-date hence it avoids well-known cliche problems. The book is published in the end of 2002, and in this book some of the 102 problems are selected from the IMO that year!
As a regular lecturer of Taiwan's IMO team, I highly recommend this problem book.

Southern Wonder: Alabama's Surprising Biodiversity, by R. Scot Duncan

Southern Wonder explores Alabama’s amazing biological diversity, the reasons for the large number of species in the state, and the importance of their preservation.

Alabama ranks fifth in the nation in number of species of plants and animals found in the state, surpassed only by the much larger western states of California,Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. When all the species of birds, trees, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, wildflowers, dragonflies, tiger beetles, and ants are tallied, Alabama harbors more species than 90 percent of the other states in the United States. Alabamais particularly rich in aquatic biodiversity, leading the nation in species of freshwater fishes, turtles, mussels, crayfish, snails, damselflies, and carnivorous plants. The state also hosts an exceptional number of endemic species—those not found beyond its borders—ranking seventh in the nation with 144 species. The state’s 4,533 species, with more being inventoried and discovered each year, are supported by no less than 64 distinct ecological systems—each a unique blend of soil, water, sunlight, heat, and natural disturbance regimes. Habitats include dry forests, moist forests, swamp forests, sunny prairies, grassy barrens, scorching glades, rolling dunes, and bogs filled with pitcher plants and sundews. The state also includes a region of subterranean ecosystems that are more elaborate and species rich than any other place on the continent.

Although Alabama is teeming with life, the state’s prominence as a refuge for plants and animals is poorly appreciated. Even among Alabama’s citizens, few outside a small circle of biologists, advocates, and other naturalists understand the special quality of the state’s natural heritage. R. Scot Duncan rectifies this situation in Southern Wonder by providing a well-written, comprehensive overview that the general public, policy makers, and teachers can understand and use. Readers are taken on an exploratory journey of the state’s varied landscapes—from the Tennessee River Valley to the coastal dunes—and are introduced to remarkable species, such as the cave salamander and the beach mouse. By interweaving the disciplines of ecology, evolution, meteorology, and geology into an accessible whole, Duncan explains clearly why Alabama is so biotically rich and champions efforts for its careful preservation.

Review
"In this 'surprising' book (to quote the subtitle), Duncan (Birmingham-Southern College) tells stories to 'excite the 10-year-old in all of us.' He lapses into jargon infrequently but only because of the ubiquity of some terms (e.g., r-selected) at the college level. The surprise comes from the high-quality photographs (134 in full color), the easy, breezy writing style, and the rigor of this volume. Somehow Duncan incorporates 665 citations and website links (many of them from Alabama) into accessible flowing prose. He covers all habitats, many fish and mammals (plus a few birds), but sadly no insects. Readers will truly realize the book's scope when they encounter the extensive index with 1,700 entries, 8 pages of chapter notes, and a 46-page reference section at the end. This extensive scholarly apparatus makes it a valuable academic work. Southern Wonder is a must buy for libraries in Alabama and a should buy for any library serving students in North American natural history courses. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All readership levels."
—CHOICE

“Scot Duncan has delivered one of the most important books ever written about Alabama. Beautifully composed, it is a revelation about one of the most biologically diverse regions in North America and a call to Alabama’s people to treasure and protect the state’s living heritage.”
—Edward O. Wilson, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Social Conquest of Earth

“This book covers almost every nook of biodiversity in the state. It is well-thought-out and delivered. The organization makes it easy for both lay and experienced readers of scientific knowledge to become enthralled in the subject matter.”
—T . Wayne Barger, State Botanist, Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources

"Southern Wonder is an amazing and eye-opening book, comprehensive enough to be a field guide as well as a doorway to the natural world."
—Rick Montague, in awarding the 2014 Philip D. Reed Environmental Writing Award from the Southern Environmental Law Center

From the Author
After winning the 2014 Reed Award for Environmental Writing given by the Southern Environmental Law Center:
“Alabama is a superstar of biological diversity, and Southern Wonder is my attempt to spread the word. I am humbled to be in the company of some of the South’s best environmental writers, and grateful for this opportunity to share the story of Alabama’s biodiversity with a broader audience.”

"With time, I realized no single feature was responsible for Alabama’s
biodiversity. Instead, three overarching natural factors have
shaped the state’s biodiversity. First, Alabama’s warm, wet climate has
nurtured productive ecosystems throughout the state. Second, and
more influentially, geological processes guided the state to its current
latitude, created a topographically diverse terrain, and exposed a great
range of rock and soil types at the surface. Alabama’s combination of
a mild climate and diverse terrain supports 64 distinct terrestrial and
wetland ecological systems. The more ecological diversity there is in a
geographic area, the higher the species count. This is a portable truth
about biodiversity you can apply anywhere at any scale.
A third factor, biological evolution, is a product of the other two.
Radical changes in Alabama’s climate and landscape have continuously
forced its flora and fauna to adjust through evolutionary adaptations.
Evolution is a complex process explored later in this book, but suffice
it to say that these adjustments over millions of years led many populations
to become distinct species living nowhere else but in Alabama.
There is a fourth reason that Alabama has so many species, but it
fits awkwardly with the others. For reasons beyond the scope of this
book, Alabama’s boundaries were drawn such that within the state are
several distinct geographic regions, each with a unique suite of ecosystems.
These include a corner of an ancient mountain range, an extensive swath of
coastal plain, 50 miles of coastline, a piece of the largest
temperate watershed in the world, and one of the most biodiverse watersheds
in the temperate world."

An Exceptional Resource for All Natural History Lovers in Alabama
By Jim Lacefield
The state of Alabama boasts some of the highest biological diversity of any part of North America. In Southern Wonder Scot Duncan explains masterfully how the state's extraordinary richness in plant and animal species has come about as the result of natural forces interacting over the course of millions of years to shape its landscape regions, watersheds, and soils. He examines the distinctive ecology of each subregion of the state by focusing on the unique biological, geological, geographical, and historical factors that have led to the area's modern environments and communities of life. Duncan's broad range of ideas and his "deep history" approach serves the book well, and he supports his major premises with odd and interesting examples of how evolution and adaptation have produced rare and endemic plant and animal species exquisitely fit for their local environment. The book is scholarly, but not at the expense of its accessibility to a broader audience of amateur naturalists. Duncan's book is a valuable and entertaining exploration into the origins of biodiversity in Alabama and how the dynamic interplay of natural and human forces over time have shaped life in this particular part of the world.

Scot Duncan's Southern Wonder is likely to stand as the ultimate guide to Alabama's ecology and biodiversity for many years to come. This book belongs in the hands of everyone interested in the natural history of this state and in the many varieties of life that call it home.

Wonderful
By John McCarty
Had the great privilege of having the author as both a professor and an academic advisor. His courses always touched on the amazing diversity that Alabama is blessed to have and encouraged us to appreciate what was close by. I'm personally thrilled that Dr. Duncan is using his skills to communicate just how how special Alabama is.

As a life long Alabama resident, I was aware of our great biodiversity, but did not have an inkling how fortunate we are. The breath and depth are presented in a beautiful flowing pros that in my opinion is rare for this type subject.
