Good Book for Beginner or More Advanced

Peterson's books on Shutterspeed and Aperature are among the best I've ever encountered so when I saw this book in the soon to be released section I ordered it immediately. After waiting three months, it finally arrived and although I would not put it into the same category as the Aperture and Shutterspeed books, it is certainly a worthy addition.

First, I'm not a pro but enjoy close-up and macro probably more than any other type of photography. This book strikes a solid balance between buying advice and explanations sufficient for newbies wanted to get started in close-up or macro and a few creative ideas or style for others with more experience.

The emphasis is certainly on close-up above macro but with sufficient appeal to keep both happy. Ample explanations, nice use of comparative photo's and Petersons exceptional style of casual communication that provides insight into the shot itself.

Also, he includes wide angle, fish-eye and other less common lens types outside of just the macro itself...for that he gets an extra star as it is a topic rarely included in most close-up discussions. Not every photo is of stellar quality - although there are some beautiful examples.

Briefly, topics include equipment, depth of field and aperature, general tips, home studio, framing, magnification ratios, depth of field preview, and other essential information.

To sum it up...a worthy addition but not of the same quality or caliber as exposure and shutterspeed. Newbies will benefit the most while more experienced users may pick up a few worthy ideas.

Excellent book if lacking some depth

The newest book from Bryan Peterson, released in March 2009, it cannot help but come in direct comparison with John Shaw's primer on macro photography.

However, this is a book on CLOSE-UP photography and that should be kept in mind when reading it. While macro is covered as much as close-up photography, both are given strong emphasis and many techniques can be applied to either situation.

This book goes into good detail about nearly every aspect of close-up and macro photography you might want to know a bit about: equipment, lenses, filters, diffusers, reversing rings, good point and shoot cameras, tripods, reflectors, ring flash, etc. However this will be a 'bit' about each one. On some, such as lighting topics, there are entire books out there written just on those subjects.

Depth of Field is covered very nicely and in more detail than Shaw's book, tying it in with composition, lighting and artistic decisions.

Overall, this is an excellent book and very up to date, printed March 31 2009. The cameras, lenses and other items mentioned are ones we are all using today or might buy. Artistically, the ideas are presented in a way that make you want to pick up your camera and go see what you can find. Readability wise, Peterson is an excellent writer and teacher which make this book very accessible to photographers at any level.

Another good photo technique book from Brian Peterson

I have taught photography for the past 20 years and for much of this time I have been relying on Brian Peterson's ideas to help make many photo concepts more interesting going back to his original "Learning to See Creatively".
I found this book to be particularly worthwhile because it isn't limited to extreme close ups and, thank heavens, isn't filled with insect photographs. Rather, Brian suggests a number of approaches to the subject and shows wonderful examples.
If you are interested in close up photography, this is a Very Good Read!

Rather than merely resurrect past instances of ecologically attuned art, this volume features essays that resituate many canonical figures, such as Thomas Eakins, Aaron Douglas, and Isamu Noguchi, in an ecocritical light by which they have yet to be viewed. Studying such artists and artworks through an ecocritical lens not only provides a better understanding of these works and the American landscape, but also brings a new interpretive paradigm to the field of art history--a field that many of these critics believe would do well to embrace environmental concerns as a vital area of research.

This unique book provides concepts and background necessary to understand and build algorithms for computing the elementary functions―sine, cosine, tangent, exponentials, and logarithms. The author presents and structures the algorithms, hardware-oriented as well as software-oriented, and also discusses issues related to accurate floating-point implementation. The purpose is not to give "cookbook recipes" that allow one to implement a given function, but rather to provide the reader with tools necessary to build or adapt algorithms for their specific computing environment.

This expanded second edition contains a number of revisions and additions, which incorporate numerous new results obtained during the last few years. New algorithms invented since 1997―such as Matula’s bipartite method, another table-based method due to Ercegovac, Lang, Tisserand, and Muller―as well as new chapters on multiple-precision arithmetic and examples of implementation have been added. In addition, the section on correct rounding of elementary functions has been fully reworked, also in the context of new results. Finally, the introductory presentation of floating-point arithmetic has been expanded, with more emphasis given to the use of the fused multiply-accumulate instruction.

The book is an up-to-date presentation of information needed to understand and accurately use mathematical functions and algorithms in computational work and design. When every bit matters

Most people use floating point arithmetic in a fairly cavalier way. They treat double precision numbers as exact. And, although people use commercial libraries for transcendentals and the like, they seem unconcerned when they need to implement an offbeat function or approximation. Everyone knows the Taylor series for exp(x), for example, so how hard could it be to code that up? (Answer: easy to code, and equally easy to do very badly.)

In fact, IEEE standard arithmetic can not even represent 1/3 exactly. (If that's news to you, or if you think the difference doesn't matter, you should back off and find some introductory material before attacking this book). Also, orthogonal polynomials will give better accuracy and more controllable error than Taylor series, for polynomial approximations of given degree - over a decimal digit more accuracy, in a project I worked on recently. The first three chapters go over those basics, then get into the book's real content.

The next chapters address table-based methods - and tables appear at one point or another in many implementations.Then the author presents iterative techniques for square roots (and 1/sqrt, which is often more convenient), logs exponentials, and trig functions. Although accuracy is paramount, these algorithms also emphasize fast convergence using inexpensive operations. The next section, on shift-and-add algorithms, presents advanced, accurate, efficient algorithms including CORDIC. This section requires close attention, since this book is about principles rather than cut-and-paste coding, so people without immediate implementation needs might come back to it to give it the effort it requires. The book's last section deals with range reduction, i.e. converting the problem to a more tightly bounded one, where the algorithm's behavior can be better undestood and controlled. It also deals with rounding and other quirky cases in floating point arithmetic.

This book isn't for everyone - in fact, not many people these days need to implement "library" functions on their own. As a result, knowledge of implementing them well is increasingly scarce. If you end up in the unusual position of having to implement them yourself, possibly using an exotic computing technology, then this book will help you get the last possible bit of accuracy, and to get it as fast as possible.

Kindle version difficult to read

There are many figures and math equations in this book, and the way the book was digitized, many of them are difficult to read. Portions of letters and numbers are missing, equations are not always in the proper order with their associated text, and figures look blurry. It's as if you're referencing a bad photocopy. The content of the book is excellent, however, thus the 5-star review. Just get the paper version and avoid the Kindle version.

Clear and complete

The book clearly explains the most important algorithms used by computers to compute many mathematical functions, with plenty of actual examples.

It is not a list of algorithms and tables, but rather a recipe book; actual computation of values and tables is left to the reader, better equipped with some numerical analysis package.

Despite the title, the methods can be applied (with some effort) to a broad set of functions (including many that are not usually considered "elementary", like Bessel or Gudermannian functions).

An extensive bibliography is included.

A must for those who are involved in designing and implementing such functions for a computer, but also an enjoyable reading for those who wonder how some functions can be computed.
