About the Author
Aldon Lynn Nielsen is the author of Black Chant: Languages of African-American Postmodernism and Integral Music: Languages of African-American Innovation. Lauri Ramey is the author of Slave Songs and the Birth of African American Poetry and The Heritage Series of Black Poetry, 1962–1975. Nielsen and Ramey also coedited Every Goodbye Ain't Gone: An Anthology of Innovative Poetry by African Americans.

This rating is specifically for the Kindle edition, much of which is barely readable, and is misrepresented as having "enhanced typesetting" on the product page. Many of the poems in this book are presented as very low resolution image files, which when zoomed, are still barely large enough to read and pixilated. There are only a handful where the formatting is such that it might require a static presentation to conform to the original page layout, and for those, a .pdf would be a much better choice. The others are interspersed with poems which have similar layout and are presented with the enhanced typesetting, so one gets the idea that the publisher simply couldn't be bothered to reformat all of the poems. I have 120 poetry books on my kindle and only one other with pages this poorly formatted. Normally, I would return the book, but I really wanted to read this, and I don't feel I should return a book I actually read. I am so irritated reading it, however that I don't think I could fairly rate the content. I'm thinking four stars, but given a readable copy, I might have gone five. This kindle book is way too expensive for such a low res presentation.
