In April 1735, twenty-year-old William MacGregor, possessing little more than a bottle of Scotch whiskey and a set of Shakespeare’s plays, arrives in Charles Town, South Carolina, to make his fortune in the New World. Soon young MacGregor is on the Cherokee trail to Indian country, where he settles in as a novice in the deerskin trade. Along the way William learns not only the arts of managing a pack train and trading with the Indians, but of reading the land and negotiating cultural differences with the Cherokee—whose clan system is much different from the Scottish clans of his homeland. William also learns that the Scottish enlightenment he so admires has not made much headway in the Carolina backcountry, where the real challenges are to survive, day to day, during the tense times after the Yamasee War and to remember that while in Indian country . . . it is their country. A scholar of the native Southeast, Charles Hudson has turned his hand to this work of historical fiction, bringing to life the packhorsemen, Indian traders, and southeastern Indians of the early 18th-century Carolina. About the Author
Charles Hudson is Franklin Professor of Anthropology and History Emeritus from The University of Georgia and author of many scholarly books including The Southeastern Indians; Knights of Spain, Warriors of the Sun; Conversations with the High Priest of Coosa; and numerous journal articles. This is his first work of historical fiction.

Good Historical Fiction

Let's be clear, if you are looking for an action-adventure full of warfare, this isn't it. On the other hand, if you're looking for a book that depicts the day-to-day life of a young working-class man in 1730's South Carolina and Georgia, this is right up your alley. The author draws you into the world of a Scottish immigrant who falls into the Cherokee deerskin trade of early Colonial America, and he does it well. There is limited action in the book, but it is the kind of action that would have actually taken place in the life of someone in William MacGregor’s position. That said, the book pulled me along and kept me interested throughout its pages. I would highly recommend this work for anyone interested in historical fiction or for anyone who lives in the Northeast Georgia or Upstate South Carolina regions where the Cherokee towns of Tugalaoo or Keowee were located. It will make you appreciate the oft-forgotten history of the area.
